Hmm.. there's the option in Mame to Play and Record Uncompressed AVI Output, which will record your game in AVI format, but it's jerky while you're playing. It stops recording when you hit escape, and when you play the AVI it's not jerky. It's because it's uncompressed, is why it's jerky. I'll keep working on it.

Baby Pac-Man was terrible. I'm glad Namco stayed away from that concept. Firefox was a pretty rare laserdisc game. Based on a very boring Clint Eastwood movie of the same name. An early maze game I remember seeing back in 1980 was "The Adventures Of Robby Roto". Not one of Bally/Midway's shining moments. I remember a crappy game called "Digger" by Gremlin/Sega that was basically a remake of "Heiankyo Alien" from Japan, and was remade as "Space Panic" the same year, in a much better platform format. 2 more: "Dazzler" by CVS (who made Hunchback), which was a Turtles/Donkey Kong hybrid, where you feed an ape bananas while dropping snakes to fend off attacking vultures, and GTI's "Slither", which was actually a fairly good Centipede clone. You were a laser cannon in the desert fending off attacking snakes from above and below.

Sounds like Atari's Sky Raider from 1978. Hippodrome is an awful, awful game. I played it and refuse to touch it again.

Ugh.. I couldn't make it through the video.. that's just so stupid. I know that's the idea, but jeez. Maybe I'll look it up again someday when I'm drunk off my ass.

FA-SHOWTIME!!!--Shogun Warriors, Kaneko 1992 Really bad Engrish, in a really bad game.

I don't think that's a video file. It's just a recording of the keystrokes that you use to make replay. You still have to use another program to record the video and audio. That seems right, as I just ran format factory and it saved a whopping one frame, no animation at all. It's an .mng file and I had seen some mng to avi programs so I thought it might be possible, but I couldn't get those to work. Just a bunch of b.s. I guess. Sounds like Mame needs to fix the movie-recording concept a bit. Thanks folks! If you know of another arcade emu that can make movies in mpeg, avi, whatever format, please let me know. I'm looking to add some more videos on YouTube (got some NES tips up there), and apparently there's some very frustrated Bagman players out there that could benefit from some visual tips.

I like that song quite a bit. I want to karaoke it someday.

Yeah, I need to swing by Ground Kontrol sometime. As I said earlier, I can play all those games on my CPU. But there's something to be said for the sound of the coin dropping into the slot, the feel of the joysticks and buttons, the sounds of the other machines playing around you, etc. Pietro's Pizza, Farrell's and Rico's Red Lion Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor (now Round Table Pizza) all had pretty good mini-arcades. My dad bowled league on Monday nights at Kellogg Bowl in Milwaukie, and next door was a Pietro's. They had OUTSTANDING thin crust pizza back in the day. Played LOTS of Bagman there.

Arcade game bosses that would intimidate/frighten you
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Good choice. I think I beat him ONCE without cheating. God, he doesn't stop moving. I had a hard time with Tonfun, as well. For home console games (I know it's off topic, sorry), Dr. Salvador and the Bella Sisters on Resident Evil 4, though they're not really bosses per se, would scare the s#*t outta me when they first fired up their chainsaws and screamed maniacally as they went after my head. They succeeded a number of times. Yuck! -
I'm starting to get some of the nuances of the game and was thinking of making a video on how to beat the first stage.. MAME has a video capture feature, but it's an extension that I don't know how to convert to .avi or .mpeg. It won't play and can't be read by YouTube, which is where I want to post it. Anybody have any ideas?

Wow.. I was thinking about this kind of topic. 80s music and arcades went hand in hand. Some songs that definitely come to mind: Stone In Love. Here's another one: "Ah.. a creature for my amusement. PREPARE FOR BATTLE!" --Space Fury, 1981 Sega/Gremlin Thanks for the good quotes, folks.

Him- Hi, how are you? Her- I'm fine thank you......aaaaaah LOL! The voicework in the game left much to be desired. Played that one a number of times nevertheless at Farrell's and Malibu Gran Prix.

I didn't care much for DK3 either. I applaud some games when they try to go in a new direction but Stanley and the greenhouse concept just wasn't that interesting (what the hell is DK doing there anyway?). There needed to be more interesting power-ups or special challenges, or bonus stages or something like that to spice things up. I felt the gameplay was dull and monotonous.

Crazy Climber (upright), Ms. Pac Man (cocktail), or Astro Blaster (upright). Gotta move out before I can fit those.
-
Oh, and I would imagine you played Super Bagman, and wonder what your take is on that one.
-
3rd level has about the same amount of bags as the last but the cops are now as fast as you (much more so when you carry a bag) and the wheelbarrow is moved to the last screen when you start the level. Amd if you ever wondered, the score rolls over at one million.
-
Cougar, Nope, can't really beat the first level with regularity without cheating on MAME. I can cheat and find out what level 3 looks like but I would imagine it's got even more bags of gold than level 2, and maybe the guards move faster, i.e. nothing especially different. This may actually be a good thing, as more bags means you can have more opportunities to get the time back up, if you get my drift.

Activision's Tennis was a good competitive 2p game.

You may have to reconvert it back to a Prof Pac cab, as that is pretty rare and if you post it on Craigslist or Ebay for sale you may find collectors willing to shell out something decent. You could still probably sell it as a NEO GEO but people might want the original cab. Don't know for sure. Another weird, rare game I only came across at an arcade once was Williams' "MYSTIC MARATHON". Strange game where you are an elf? troll? goblin? that races against other similar creatures while avoiding apple throwing trees, whirlpools, and other hindrances or taking various shortcuts to get ahead. Just weird, not terribly good.

Ick.. this topic died a painful death. Anyway, I guess some of my favorite dialogue is "Fighter pilots needed in sector wars! Play Astro Blaster!" That line suckered me in automatically.

Hey Cougar! Nice to see a forum on Bagman. What a b*tch of a game.. I have beaten it but all it does is repeat the level again, with more bags than before. I have learned that you can park the wheelbarrow on top of a ladder and the guards will fall when they touch it. I also learned it's not prudent unless you're in an emergency situation to drop the bags while on a long ladder. Also, on the last screen the guards always seem to get off the elevator at the 2nd to top platform. This way you can ride back down if you're on the top floor without getting caught. But watch for the damn mine cart at the bottom that frequently seems to nail you. Also, never move the wheelbarrow too far from the gold bags because if you run out of time, you die. And try not to abuse the guards too much, as they get insanely fast the more you pick on them. A couple other things: if you don't like where the elevator is positioned (i.e. you want to get on sooner) you can back out of the screen and come back quickly, and it may have repositioned. One last tip: if you die while carrying a gold bag (don't drop it), you don't have to get that bag anymore. If it was the last bag on the level, you start at the next level. I used to wonder what was up with the weird dialogue, but the original company that licensed Bagman to Stern is French, so that may be French that Bagman is speaking.

All Time Favorite Aracade Coin-ops
retrorussell replied to Classic Pac's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I have an Off Road Rally 4 player, seem to attract relatives in the 13-25 age group, the 25 year olds think it's nostalgic. Fun game! Nitro! Love that boom sound : ) Hope you all like this.. many of my faves are in this video. -
ATARI 2600 EASTER EGGS, TIPS, CHEATS, ETC.
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Atari 2600
I remember that trick.. I think you could also jump "through" Coily if your timing was right, because he never really jumped from step to step, he'd just "teleport" due to the poor game mechanics. Something else I'd like to throw out there.. many people thought that Atari Basketball was insanely hard playing vs. the computer (and it was but I beat him several times), but if a second player plugs in they can control the computer player. Also, one of my favorite 2600 sports titles was Tennis by Activision.. an unreturnable shot is made if you don't have your opponent far from in front of you, and you return a shot by using the VERY TIP of your racket. Actually, maybe just leave a TEENY bit of space between the ball and the end of your racket. You'll hit it at a wicked angle and they won't be able to return it. Thanks for readin', folks! -
Hey gamers. Some games, new or old, have dialogue that when someone brings it up you automatically know which game it is. Like I said, it could be new or old, like from early voice chips in early '80s games, or 3-D fighters taunting each other in the newer fighting games, or maybe even in the laserdisc games. Any era, just SPOKEN dialogue, not words flashing across the screen.
