Been thinking for about two years if I should use Unity or Unreal for some long term cross platform development, this recent update made the decision process a lot easier! Thanks Riccitello!

Really excited to give R-Type a shot on the Jaguar! Pity I couldn't get them before ejagfest though

Thanks for the feedback
I'm definitely addressing the first item, I modelled the encounter rate a bit too strict to old games, a modern approach is definitely more welcome these days.
Other items are much more difficult to address, but who knows.. I looked back at my code and see plenty of places for improvements.
Allowed me to create this nice intro screen

This is getting a bit off-topic but if you followed recent news about AA being bought by Atari, this is being heavily discussed but we can still produce and publish games for the Lynx. AA can publish homebrew and afaik everyone else can do this as well.
Maybe using the logos will become a problem since they're trademarked again, but if you look at for example the Gameboy homebrew scene there are tons of new releases, kickstarters, etc. with the only notable thing is that they don't use the original logos. I think this is fine.

Wasn't the Lynx moved into the Public Domain years ago?
The Jaguar was released into public domain. Afaik the Lynx was just forgotten about, but never officially released into public domain.

Is it an Everdrive or an old pirate multicart or something else? I have had good luck with most games although I noticed a few glitches.
Its a multicart yes, so not official. Other games work with the adapter so its probably because of its unlicensed nature.. pity though, 20 GG games in one is a lot

Maybe one of you knows what is going on here...
I'm trying to run a Game Gear Multicart using the GG adapter but then the game somehow gets stuck in a "Sound test" screen. I tried both regions from the GG settings page but the result is the same. Any idea what could be causing this?

Drink a few cocktails at the 8bit cafe in Shinjuku!
I found some good deals on retro games in BOOKOFF stores in Osaka back in 2019, maybe they're ok in Tokyo as well, but also watch out with potential import fees.. they picked me out of a line of people at an airport in Europe when they noticed I came shopping from Japan.

Last position on Switchblade... unacceptable! I need to dive back into this game.

Yeah that part of the market is crazy. I find the whole retro market a bit concerning with the prices constantly going up.. takes the fun out of collecting. Regular Pockets are being sold at stupid high prices on eBay and I didn't like to preorder when they first got announced.
Gave it another shot with the glow version because they are shipping this week and somehow managed.
Didn't know it also came with a synth/sequencer to hook up to the OP-1, looks like that'll be my first usecase 😄

Are you really the one that hit the jackpot though? I mean this model was $250, and iirc you're in Europe so you paid expensive shipping and will have to pay expensive taxes as well. 😅
Then if you have the money anyway, good for you I guess.
Indeed I think it's a little too pricey, but I've been wanting to get a new Lynx device for developing games and realized that it would be not much cheaper (mcwill and all). It's a small investment for sure.
Btw, that jackpot remark should be in double quotes, I'm being sarcastic 😅 I did the fastest checkout in history probably, judging from all the complaints online

Hit the jackpot yesterday.. got a glowy one, not that I specifically want it to glow but man these things are scarce

I think I got till page 9 when things moved so fast I couldn't get the letters to the edges of the screen anymore. Curious to see someone beating my score now

My scores for this round:
Lexis: 36850
Switchblade 2: 23490
I'll definitely give Switchblade 2 a few more tries, but I gotta admit I do not like Lexis at all.. at higher speed the edges of the screen are not reachable as hard as I try to move (very uncontrollable) and though the score looks alright I didn't focus for a second on creating words; just strategically placing vowels and consonants created words I do not have in my English vocabulary.

I think APB could be a fun game if not for the demerit system. It is ridiculously easy to get them, and as far as I know they never reset.
iirc you can get rid of demerit every so many points (10k maybe?), though playing the game for the first time in years again makes it feel impossible to get to such a score, but I'll give it a few shots.
On highway 10 you can easily get a lot of gas and time if you keep on driving. I remember I always found it difficult to get to the same result when moving away from this road, maybe the map helps.
Edit: new APB score: 13535
Found a hint saying that every 5K points you remove a demerit, so its not impossible. Still though, the moment I start on a highway other than 10 I find it very difficult to balance gas and time. I keep going back to the same highway for this reason.

I forgot how difficult APB is, but its a really good game. I don't think I will ever beat that high score from back in the days again. Played it on Mednafen
APB: 9255
Dance Bro: 40
Btw, if you're curious about how the map of APB looks like as a whole, I found a map for the Amiga which shows different graphics but I believe the layout is the same. I always regarded it as a predecessor of GTA for some reason...

I guess this is a recurring topic because people do recognize the power of our beloved handheld and I'll throw in my 2 cents..
The Lynx has enough capabilities to pretty much run most of the famous IPs like Mario/Yoshi games. Lots of untapped potential and a real shame how some projects were cancelled towards the end (Eye of the Beholder ~ eternal shame). Think about how it took Nintendo 22 years after the Lynx was released to run 3D graphics on the GBA.
Zaku showed a lot of this potential when it comes to big sprites, high frame rate, fast action. I managed create a JRPG for the Lynx, a hugely popular genre with zero games for the Lynx, though I'll be the first to admit that my game doesn't push the hardware limits other than endless memory management.
Most of us homebrewers will show no interest in working on existing IPs without a license, simply because it will get us in trouble for no good reason. The Mortal Kombat project is the first time I see people trying to use an existing IP. That project actually demonstrates the difficulties of taking an existing game and porting it to the Lynx, sprites are not optimized, resolutions and aspect ratios are different, they need to make a lot of choices to stay faithful to the original game.

Hi Gaz,
Thanks for the work you put in here! Received and paid the invoice. Can't wait to boot up R-Type 2 on the Jaguar!

Very nice article indeed. Happy to own a copy of Zaku from the first batch, its what got me excited to try homebrew myself

As a kid unable to understand the English manual it took me some days to figure out you need to use the siren on the traffic cones.
Now its easily one of my favorites on the system! Chase those crack addicts and hookers! I was a little too young to understand what was going on 😂

A tiny snippet of gameplay was part of this huge homebrew showcase.
We'll create some more elaborate videos ourselves when we reach a milestone, but there are a few new details shown here:

Anyone playing this?
I don't have a PS5 but this game could be the reason for me to look into getting one.
