Collectors - Are you going into debt for retro?
polyex replied to polyex's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ok, fair enough. What do you think about this then, from the same site. I was buying houses around 2000, and that number seems correct, as does the current. Thanks. -
Looking at this old stuff reminds me of how much thinner people were back in the 70’s

Try making those adjustments based on the rate of increase in salaries instead of the inflation rate. Salaries have not kept up with inflation in decades. It is a common mistake that is encouraged by the powers that be. (I'll take my tinfoil hat off now). -
With all the inflation created in the last couple of years, I read that many Americans and people in other countries for that matter, are going into terrible credit card debt, car loan debt, house prices/rent too high etc. I was wondering what sort of effect it is having on the community. Does anyone buy their retro consoles and computers on credit? Do you buy on ebay for example with a credit card and finance at those crazy rates or do you use a debit card or pay your entire balance every month? Does paying 20% interest seem worth it for retro? Have you thought about selling your retro stuff due to feeling the squeeze of rapid rising cost of living or are you unaffected?

You should work for the Fed. Example: (source : https://usdebtclock.org/ ) Check out Americans income: Average U.S.A median income in 2000 : $31,879 USD Median U.S.A. median income in 2022 (NOW) : $35,915 USD Now check out their two biggest expenses: Average new car price in 2000 : around $18,000 USD Average new car price in 2022: around $44,000 USD Median New Home in 2000 : $165,072 Median New Home in 2022: $404,156 Salaries have barely moved, your money is simply worth less NOW because of inflation which is the increase in the size of money supply not in an increase in prices. An increase in prices is a side effect of the increase in money printing by the Fed. Don't mean to pick on you, but I always see people citing the CPI inflation calculator and not considering salaries when trying to imply things are cheaper now. Salaries did not rise at the same rate as inflation and you buy games with your salary.

Do you see game prices ever going back down?
polyex replied to dudeguy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Is that local taxes making it that price? I thought Norway was a giant oil producer?!? In Riyadh gasoline is around $2.60 USD a gallon (.60 USD a liter) -

If most people buy things on credit, prices on those things will come down as rates go up. People can only borrow so much before it breaks. -

Nice to see that all the inflation the U.S. Fed has printed over the last year or so is being put to good use. ?

Any other millennials/gen Z who like the Atari 2600?
polyex replied to Corporal Cromwell's topic in Atari 2600
I have noticed a distinct difference in what people find entertaining who were of the Sega/Nintendo 90's vs the late 70's early 80's Atari/Intellivision etc. players. Later players seemed to be influenced more by the violence in Japanese fighting games not to mention the weird pedophile imagery of Japanese Anime, where older games and players seemed to me to have more variety in the titles and a more "American" influence in the culture. There is of course, crossover in all players. -
Is 2600 programming a good way to learn 6502?
polyex replied to Arno1978's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
If you are fairly intelligent and more importantly patient, the VCS is not that hard to learn on, however you would probably be happier with the NES if that is the machine you are most interested in writing a game for. -

I have a Colecovision with a mod for composite that I installed a couple of years ago. I think I bought the mod on ebay. Lately I am noticing some red bars on the screen. Is this a common failure? What should I check?

80 Column card. I have an 80 column card, but nothing is in slot 3. You are probably seeing the sound card in slot 4, that one is lit up too.

The accelerator card. I highly recommend it. You can fine tune your speed, say for a game that is a little too slow at stock speed but would be unplayable at super high speed. Xevious is a really good example. I prefer being able to fine tune the speed to other accelerators that are all or none. I have had it for I think a couple of years and it has been bullet proof. You do need a little noodling to get basic to accelerate, but overall it is excellent.
