  1. Are you using the original power supply? It's ticking and is about to blow, get a C64 Saver, a 128 power supply with an adapter for C64, or a replacement supply not made by Commodore. Otherwise your C64 could burn out from failed power supply and it's well over $50 for a working C64 on eBay.

Sounds like a power problem. If you are using the original C64, non-repairable brick of a power supply, I wouldn't use it again, and I would replace it with a heavy-duty C64 power supply, modded C128 power supply, or a new, heavy-duty power supply from Ray Carlsen.

Oh goody, that's what I wanted to hear right after I start trying to learn BASIC on the thing :| Oh well.

Yeah, I'm using the original power supply. Any recommendations of good new power supplies for it? would a modded C128 PSU be that much better? its just about as old. also how is it non repairable? I saw a comment on another board saying that they were filled with epoxy or something, but mine doesn't appear to have any in it, it appears to be pretty simple.

So I looked up "commodore 64 power supply" on google and none of the results had my PSU, maybe this one isn't original? I saw a grey one that was filled with shit, and that looked horrible. anyway, here's pics of mine:

  2. Unfortunately the 1541 uses a radically different encoding than a PC does - GCR vs MFM if it makes any sense to you. When it comes to Amiga floppy disks - which also are a form of GCR - they somehow can be read on a PC drive with special software, but it doesn't seem similar things are doable with 5.25" disks.

Before you order an X-series cable, consider if you'd rather spend a little more and get one of the lower end SD card devices like SD2IEC, uIEC/SD etc. At this point, the gang will chime in about limited compatibility, but if you're willing to write floppy disks anyway, you may find shuffling a memory card back and forth a little more convenient than moving the drive. Actually you can have both the C64 and a PC connected to it at the same time, but you need to be careful about decoupling the bus with a special POKE, otherwise you might find it locks up.

alright, I was wondering if the drives were that different, and they are, so I guess I'll get one of those SD2IEC things to make everything simple. I might get one of those cables too eventually because I like old disk drives.

oh yeah an another question. This C64 that I have has a weird behavior, where if I let it sit for a while and turn it on, the LED is dim and nothing appears on screen unless I wait maybe 30 seconds, then the LED lights up to full brightness and the computer turns on. Is this a sign of some problems, maybe bad caps or something?

  3. I got a C64 just a few days ago with a disk drive and I was wondering how to write some disks for it.

Of course I googled it and found a cable that allows you to hook up a commodore drive to a PC, but In order to be cheap I was wondering if there are any other methods I could do.

I have a 486 machine with a 5.25" drive in it, I was wondering if there was a program that could write images onto disks without me having to buy cables or drag this commodore drive all over the place to get things done. If not I guess I'll get one of those cables.

  4. Tiger R-Zone is the worst I've played. I can find redeeming qualities in every other console. Game.Com had a ok solitaire and Lights Out games on it. 3DO had Gex and a couple other pretty good ports of games on it. Virtual Boy had Wario Land and a few other good games. Even the Nokia N-Gage had some okay games on it. There is nothing redeemable about the Tiger R-Zone. Everything on it is awful and every variation of the console is crap.

Oh I forgot about the R-Zone. I had one once when I was a kid. Gave me headaches. That would top my list of worst consoles out there, but really, who calls that abomination a console? Its just a glorified Tiger handheld thing, which are pretty garbage.

  5. That's oversimplifying the 7800 library; it also has boring computer ports that can be played elsewhere with better quality. :P :-D

Nah, but seriously, the 7800's a cool system. It was just totally in the wrong place at the wrong time. 25 years later it doesn't matter, but it doesn't take a genius to see why it struggled during its release.

That said, the NES's shovelware doesn't make the 7800 a better system. For that matter, saying that any system that has shovelware is bad is dumb. By that logic, the Atari 2600, NES, and PlayStation 2 would be bad consoles. Shovelware is an indicator of a console's popularity, which in turn is often (not always, but often) a barometer for the quality of a system. A console can't help that people make shovelware for it, and you don't have to play shovelware.

    HAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah, the 7800 is alright. Its just funny to see people come in bashing one while fanboying over another. Sure back in the day or whatever you'd have a reason to compare them, but now its apples and oranges.

  6. Solomon's Club is basically Solomon's Key except for the gameboy, which means its a good game :P

Also another game that may not be that much of a hidden gem but I don't see too many people talk about it, Pokemon Trading Card Game. The only problem with those is that you'll probably have to replace the battery.

  7. I hope this doesn't turn into a "C64 vs. NES" thread because they're both amazing platforms in different ways.

Yeah I agree. I wasn't alive when these things were popular and I don't think they're comparable really at all, besides they may have been in the same market for a bit. The games for them are very different.

I should really try more C64 stuff though

Not to mention it's a piece of shit in terms of reliability.

Depends on what model you're talking about.

  8. However, I do recognize the relevance of WHEN you were introduced to it. If I saw the NES after 16 bit computers then it would have been hard to find a reason to want to dig into its games.

Yeah, but I don't think that should change whether you think its a bad console or not. Its like saying the PS3 is shit because the PS4 is out now. While I do think that graphics are tied very close to gameplay, specifically the framerate, I don't think saying that its tech is more outdated would make it the worst. Another analogy is like saying that the Wii is the worst because the PS3 has HD capabilities. When you're looking for the worst systems out of the entire history of gaming I think differences in power are a bit irrelevant. In order for me to call something the worst, there has to be something inherently wrong with its design or something that makes it unbearable to use, as in my Gameboy's criticisms, I can't see anything on the system.

Of course this is all subjective nonsense and what I consider problems with a system might not be an issue to others, like intellivision controllers or the N64's typical framerate. Also I'm a silly person who likes to go back to older systems even if they don't look as good.

    All that good stuff.

It's about the same size as the Lynx, right? That I like because I think the Game Boy is too small. I just didn't care for the games on the Game Gear.

I've never played a Lynx, but I'm guessing its the same size of the 2nd version or so. The first version of the lynx looks bigger than the game gear. I like my "portable" systems to fit in my pocket, otherwise I'd have to carry another case, or shove it in my already stuffed laptop bag or whatever, so those big old systems just don't do it for me.

  10. I'm gonna be that guy who looks like a 5 year old, because for me that would be the PS2

When that whole generation was going on I've always wanted a PS2. All my friends and familiy members had PS2s and were playing Burnout, Medal of Honor and a bunch of other games all the time and I've always wanted one. I was that one guy with a GameCube, which definitely isn't a bad thing since Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and Smash Melee are some of my favorite games, but I always sort of felt left out. Last year I went and bought one because why not, played the hell out of Burnout 3 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely one of those times where I thought I'd never have one.

Definitely not as interesting as Stadium Mud Buggies or the Sears Super Video Arcade (I want one! D: ), but that's my story I guess.

  11.

Agreed about the Model 1 Genesis -- the better hardware revisions have deep bass and a wonderfully full sound.

The SNES had a low-pass filter IIRC to hide aliasing (insect noise) from compression and a low sampling rate as well, so that contributes to the muffling. I agree that its strongest suit was faux-orchestral music, but it could do other genres in the right hands too:

    -snip-

Its funny how LJN has a lot of games with really good music. That song reminds me of another game that has my favorite SNES soundtrack, Vortex.

Anyway, on topic, I guess the 2 consoles I consider the worst I've played would be the original Game Boy and the Game Gear (I guess I'd consider handhelds to be consoles, whatever). The original gameboy has its place in history for sure, but the console itself now is just not that great. It's huge, so it doesn't fit in pockets very well, it hogs up 4 AA batteries like they are nothing and the screen is impossible to see, especially with sidescrollers or anything with scrolling. If I were to take a system for the purpose of playing gameboy games, I'd take my GBC over the original any day.

The gamegear is huge, it takes 6 AAs, the D-pad isn't very good, the screen is blurry like the gameboy's (except color, so kudos there), and there isn't any games on the system that I want to play. They also don't work too well anymore. I have 2 busted game gears sitting in my closet, I need to fix them sometime.

  12. Not gonna lie, I still buy old VHS tapes if its an old movie I like. you can get them for a couple dimes, which is great for old Disney movies. I'm a cheapskate.

I heard there was a big thread about the Retro VGS or whatever it is now on atariage, and they were right lol. I don't have anything to contribute besides a pic of a thread my friend made on 4chan.

    Yep, sums up everything.

  13. I think I read somewhere it was like 10 tetraflops or something like that....

LOL 10 teraflops on a netbook CPU... The Radeon 290x can't put out 10 teraflops.

If I remember right Sony had a picture from a conference that had how much flops the cpu could do. All I remember it wasn't over 40 gflops more than a PS3's CPU, which isn't much of an improvement...

Besides, you buy a console for games. If you want your clock speeds up really high, PC gaming is just for you.
