Carl, thanks as always for swimming through the gobbledegook and objectively reporting what you find. Makes it a lot easier to follow this stuff!

Oh lawdy. Just came across this while reading flipboard. I was like "those renders look awfully familiar!" then The Verge's article said something about the RVGS team being brought on board and I was like "Here we go again!"

I havent used Aeris in years. When I was a kid, I was all obsessed with her and constantly looking at rumors about how to bring her back. Bought a gameshark just to shark her back in. As I got older, I realized she was kind of a boring character...there more to help Cloud's character development than anything else. Her death isn't terrible, it's beautiful (well beautifully tragic) and that's ok.
Barret's also a guy I hated as a kid but gained a lot more respect for as I got older. He's not to smart but he's got a heart of gold and is trying to do right by his people.
The swearing was notable when the game came out because very few games (on console at least, certainly from Square) allowed such language, particularly during Nintendo's stranglehold on gaming.
I'm optimistic about the FF7 remake because the dark colors and moody soundtrack (at least what we've heard of it) gives me a very Parasite Eve feeling (another Square masterpiece). It won't replace the original, and that's fine, but I'm looking forward to seeing things done a little differently.
I just hope this episodic thing doesnt lead to three short games instead of one big one.

Well he used to watermark repros to differentiate them from the real thing. For mine the case is a standard case as opposed to the ridged case that Wizard used. So it looks like a real cart but if you know that Wizard didn't use standard cases than it is obviously a repro

Err, Al makes these from time to time. It is where I got mine from.

Sales start at 6p, I don't have to be at work till 9p. What a shame!

Can I just blanket say "the 90s". ? Most of my favorite games came out late NES thru PS1

I'd be surprised if I didn't get games for Christmas- most people default to it. Apparently I'm "hard to shop for"... a thought that confuses me greatly, since I have a fairly good sized amazon wish list. Why people don't just use it is beyond me!
I actually give fairly few games as gifts. The people I know who play don't keep wish lists or collection lists, and don't really hold off on buying titles they want. It makes it hard to know what they don't already have, but still want to play. Three of them just re-caught the pokemon bug though, so there's some new 3DSes to feed this year!
I've had people tell me this too! I'm like, "I like tea and candles. $5 at the grocery store and you're done" but I guess they are afraid they will buy scents/flavors I don't like?
I don't really have a wish list anymore for expensive stuff. Really the only things I want are things I can't afford (and I certainly wouldn't want someone giving them to me as a gift!) My mom used to get me a stack of games every year and the end result was I'd have a stack of stuff I'd never bothered to play. I finally told her to stop buying me games.
I do gift games. Usually older/inexpensive stuff that I want friends to try. Whenever I get ahold of some oddball game that I know my friends (who have mostly mainstream tastes) probably haven't heard of, let alone play, I try to spread it around. One year I bought Ace Attorney for like three different people. They all liked it

Oh Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3 in Japan) is quite good and has a solid fan translation. You select which three characters you want out of a pool of six and each has various ways their class can evolve. More role playing mechanics than SoM 1 but the same solid gameplay. For your own edification, Final Fantasy Adventure on Gameboy is also part of this series. It has very similar gameplay but also blends a lot of stuff from Final Fantasy so you can see how the whole thing started as a spinoff.
After the first three games, the Mana series got kind of...weird...though.
You would probably like Illusion of Gaia if you enjoyed Secret of Mana. This is one that I have had trouble getting into but it is regarded as a cult classic.

Some people like to grind. I eat up gaining levels, collecting items, etc. I'm a big fan of Dragon Warrior/Quest because those things are a big part of that series. It's absolutely a slower pace though. You can spin your wheels in Dragon Quest III for hours and feel like you've accomplished nothing but the meager amount of gold you've collected will end up helping you to buy the next big weapon upgrade.
Wandering around in dungeons and getting lost is about like playing some of the old FPSes that were mazes you had to find the exit for. Newer RPGs are like newer FPSes, everything is on rails. There are some exceptions (hello Etrian Odyssey!) but it's all good. RPGs have always had a big story element and I eat up that fantasy stuff that is big in 90s RPGs.
-
In Secret of Mana, you can initially find items (candy, chocolate) to recover with. Eventually you'll get spells that do the same. Don't forget it is still an RPG. You'll want to visit the shops in town to buy new gear and upgrade your defense.

You might like the original Super Mario RPG. It has a really cool timed attack mechanic where you have to hit the button at just the right time to trigger a critical hit. Turn-based battles are a staple of this genre but there are some good action RPGs out there where you directly control your character.
-
Earthbound is fairly difficult for an RPG and probably not a good choice for newbies to the genre. For SNES, I'd say Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana are all excellent choices. Final Fantasy III is the game that got me into RPGs when I was a kid and I usually do a play through once a year or so. It's an excellent game.
RPGs are slower paced with focus on story and mechanics. Older RPGs strongly resemble tabletop RPGs in mechanics, but most Japanese RPGs got away from that kind of stuff in favor of the storytelling aspect.

Eye of the Beholder II is good...like really good. Much better than the other two games, though EoB I is pretty good. These are FPS dungeon crawlers. Little role-playing and borderline D&D rules but great if you love exploring and puzzles. Multiple saves are a must because there are traps that can cause you to be stuck without being able to exit. The games do not warn you when this occurs.
The Gold Box games (Pools of Radiance et al.) do a fantastic job of replicating the tactical feel of old school D&D combat. They have far better battle modes than even Baldur's Gate. Some aspects are very archaic and representative of the primitive state of computers in the 80s. Many dialogues are included in the manuals and you are expected to read these entries when prompted by the game. They are great games but perhaps hard to get into if you were not a fan in their heyday.
To me the gem of the current crop of SSI games on GoG is Stronghold. It's a dynamite 2D city building sim based on Classic D&D. Holds up very well though some aspects of the game are not intuitive given both its age and the rules it is based on.

Yes there weren't to many games for 3.11. I used to just go to the command prompt for everything. I remember when Win 95 came out, it seemed very revolutionary! Looking back, Windows 3's interface was a lot like a smartphone interface with all the folders of apps and such.
My parents used to get mad at me because we had a Packard Bell with all this crap like Packard Bell Navigator on it that was meant for total computer rookies. They liked it but I hated it! I'd always leave the computer in Windows 3.11 or on DOS. My dad finally read the manual and started learning DOS commands because of me. I figure I did him a favor.

Someone who knows more about old CRTs can probably explain this:
When I was a kid we had these RCA CRTs, nice sets like 22''-24'' I think, which was good size for one of those things. Anyway, something in the TV broke and it pushed the image down on the screen (like it would be static or black and the image would only fill 3/4 to 1/2 the set but it would be "pushed" so the bottom part of the image was off the screen). We used to bang the top of the set and it would push the image back up temporarily.
My parents claimed it was my consoles that kept breaking the TVs (and they kept buying them! We went through three of them I think!). This was early to mid 90s, before I ever got my N64. Dunno how accurate that was or what would have even broke to do that to the set but there you have it.

I paid $60 or $70 for a boxed Streets of Rage 3. It was definitely worth it and I've gotten my money's worth with the number of times I have played it with buddies. Another game I paid through the nose for was Adventure Island 3, which I think I paid $70 (aforementioned mom and pop gaming shop). Again worth it. They had the game at their other store in the East Valley and brought it over for me specially (~without~ me having to pay up front). Hard to beat that kind of service.
I don't mind paying new game prices for some of these harder to find old games if I know I'm going to get my money's worth in gameplay. Now some of the rubbish games that go for megabucks because of their obscurity, f that noise lol
-
If I'm gonna pay expensive retail prices for used gear, it's gonna be at the few (only?) mom and pop game shops left in Phoenix, certainly not at Gamestop.
But eh, if retrogaming is popular enough that the Stop is going to start carrying the stuff again, I guess I can't complain to much.

Well, it is still pre-NES so all is forgiven. And I love me some Nintendo.
You guys act like owning more than one console/brand is like polygamy or cheating on your girlfriends/wives or something. Who in here own just ONE console?

Nothing wrong with owning many consoles: 2600, 5200, 7800, Jaguar. Heck even Lynx if you want something portable I guess.
I know not what threats were put to Albert in order to get him to pose for that picture but I believe in him.

It'll probably be as plug and play as you can get but there will still be the trouble of logging onto a Steam account and no doubt the frustration of not having access to as many games as you might have on a Windows PC and so on. I think there is a market for this, just a very thin one. People who have heard PC gaming is good/better than console gaming but lack the technical expertise to construct their own machine and are afraid of jumping in.
These devices will ultimately be counterproductive though. People who get into it will probably want to build their own on the second go around and people who are disappointed by how it isn't like "real" console gaming will just go back to their Playstationboxes.
Most of the PC games I play wouldn't make sense on a TV though. I'm certainly not about to try playing Starcraft II with a controller. The form factor will be fine for some games I suppose but certainly not all.
-
Most people who build their own usually do use part pickers and the like and hunt for deals off the 2-3 major online outlets for parts. It is very cost effective but a bit of trouble. I imagine there will be a market for pre-built gaming machines from people who want to game but don't want to go to the trouble of building their own.
I'm not to sure a consolized PC that hooks up to your TV is the way to go though.

Im normally not a multiplayer guy but this 7 on 1 sounds cool. Sort of like Juggernaut in Halo, one of my favorite modes.
I too hope the single player stuff happens but it sounds like they have a good base plan if they only raise the base goal.

You must evacuate your game room, What do you take?

Laptop and desktop. Fortunately my desktop is a miniPC so it'll be a quick unhook and take. As long as I've got my computers, I'll be fine.
