Hard to crack into the local arcade collector/enthusiast scene
RobR replied to Atari the Jedi's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Regarding the Game/Watch community, I bet a bunch of the younger kids (under 20) wouldn't touch a G/W simply because it ain't color...I bet if they had an open mind, they'd like them. Some kids don't like what they call "music" today. They prefer the older stuff (Metallica, Journey, Led Zepelin, Pink Floyd) so I wouldn't say that it's because the G/W is old. -
My friend and I were talking about video games and he mentioned a game he remembered playing when he was young. He couldn't remember the name, but he said ghosts and food. I knew right away it was Gauntlet. So I went on Wikipedia to show him the screenshot and he confirmed that was the game he remembered. Ok, so far so good. Now comes the interesting part. While I was on that page, I noticed the following sentence": "The game was highly profitable upon its October 1985 launch, reportedly earning one San Mateo, California arcade operator US$15,000 in sixteen weeks and another Canadian operator $4,500 in nine days." This intrigued me as I grew up in San Mateo and was heavily into the arcade scene. So I click on the number in the square brackets to get more info. It showed the link, but I was in such a hurry to see which arcade it was, I failed to notice that the link was for a G4.COM site. Now for those of you that don't know, G4 had replaced Tech TV and was geared more for video gaming than computers and tech. Last year, G4 transformed to Esquire. So when I clicked that link, it sent me to Esquire.com which has nothing to do with video games. So that brings me here, asking anybody here if they know which arcade operator it was. If I had to guess, I'm guessing it was "Gold Mine" in Fashion Island.

I didn't have a chance to DVR it, but I'll go on Bittorent and see if I can download it and watch it. I really want to see this episode!

In WarGames, they usew the sound effects for Galaxian (even in that scene where those tourists that are going through NORAD and that lady hits that button that makes that WELCOME sign come up, there's a Galaxian sound effect, which I thought was stupid even the 1st time I saw that movie when it came out)

I saw an ad for tonight's episoce of Elementary. From what I cam gather, the detectives must finish a game to get a clue. Having never seen this series, I can't give any more info, except to say the episode title is called The Games Underfoot. I plan on watching it (or recording it and watching it tomorrow. I'll report back after I watch it and let you know what I thought.

Note to AtariAge administrators* If this post is inappropriate for this forum or if there is a better place for this post, please let me know where you put it Not everyone watches the Super Bowl. Shocking, isn't it? I'm doing my public service here by informing the retro gaming community here of a commercial that I saw during the Super Bowl that may prove interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9A1NowrnGI Hope you like it! No, sadly, I was not involved with this commecial.

I saw this on Thrillist: "Michael Jordan's got his own steakhouse. So does Mike Ditka. And Brett Favre. And so will every athlete one day, probably (even your old Little League teammate, Chris). But now, a whole new type of celebrity is getting in on the restaurant game: the 8-bit pellet-eating video game character kind. Because Pac-Man is getting his own restaurant. It's called Level 257 (named after a secret glitch level that's impossible to reach), and it'll be opening in Schaumburg, a suburb of Chicago, sometime in January of 2015. The American division of Namco Entertainment Inc., which owns Pac-Man, has revealed that the joint will be 40,000sqft and will contain table tennis, 16 bowling lanes, pinball machines, and -- DUH -- an arcade area. No word yet on whether they'll also serve assorted fruit, but one fixture on their menu is certain: PIZZA. For now, though, we'll have to take solace in the fact that they most likely won't make us dodge ghosts to get a burger. Adam Lapetina is a Food/Drink staff writer for Thrillist, and really hopes they don't make a Centipede restaurant because that would be terrifying. Read his musings at@adamlapetina." My comment: Shouldn't this be called Level 256?

I know about the "burn in" effect, but I was talking about the in game timer. Just seemed a weird #, that's all

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered somewhere else, but I have never see it asked: Why does Comabt and Air-Sea Battle have a time limit of 2 min 15 sec? At first, I thought of the 7 bit Maximum number of 128, but that would equal 2 min 8 sec.

I was perusing the trivia section and came across this: "Starpath was able to make Frogger for the VCS, because Parker Brothers didn't own the magnetic media rights." I have a question: How is a 2600 cartridge considered "magnetic media"? It certainly has no tape in it

"A Canadian-based multimedia entertainment company by the name of Fuel Industries plans on digging up the Alamogordo landfill in New Mexico, where Atari purportedly dumped truckloads of games decades ago" Uh, you DO know that New Mexico is in the U.S., right?

Sorry. I forgot to metion that they don't have a direct hing (yet). To access the computer magazine section, visit http://archive.org/d...mputermagazines. I'm going to edit the 1st post to reflect this. Again, please accept my apology. UPDATE: For some reason, I couldn't update the 1st post in this forum, sop I used the "report" link to ask the mod to edit the message. Hopefully, it will be edited

Today a friend of mine let me know that archive.org has a lot of early computer magazines online. Thought I'd let the Atari community know this. Admin, if this is old news or doesn't belong here, please do what you will. Also, please check my tags and adjust as you see fit. http://archive.org/details/computermagazines

Are the above links working? I tried both links and get "Webpage cannot be found" on both.
-
I just loged in to the site and noticed that the last update was 10/25/2010. I find it hard to believe that nothing has happened in 3 months. What's going on?

First of all, I did NOT admit I have a problem. Just because I want to get 99 points on Combat doesn't meam I have a problem. It just means I'm ambitious. Plus, the fact that my family isn't talking to me nymore just shows that they are the ones with the problem and the fact they they aren't supporting me just makes my resolve that much stronger. (slipping into madness) I'm not crazy. i was told that someone in Pequabuck, CT did achieve 98 points in Combat and I intend to beat that score. I WANT TO SEE MY NAME IN LIGHTS!! (being dragged away by the nice men in white suits) I...KnOW I cAn beat that scor... Rob Hi. I'm Rob and I'm a Emulaholic and I wish NOT to be cured!

Thanks for the link. I'm going to go study it later tonight. I'm going to see how big my ROM is before I delete it.
-
P.S. i just tried running it again and trying random selections and all it does is return to the game select screen
-
I was running Stella and sw in the game list a ROM listed as Game Select 208 in 1. I ran it and a screen came up with instructions on how to select the game by entering a # from 1 to 208 then hitting the fire button to select. I then came here to AA ("Hi, my name is Rob and (hic) I'm an alcoholic"....OOPS....wrong AA....Never Mind!) to see if Icould find any info on Game Select...NOTHING! My question is: Does anyone have a list of games (and #s) that this cart has? If you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

The commamd line should probably be something like DASM COMBAT.S -f3 -oCOMBAT.BIN I'm assuming your disassembly is called COMBAT.S, so change it in the command line as needed. The -f3 option is needed to get a "raw" binary file that works with the Atari or an emulator. Hope this helps! Michael Just so you know, I tried adding the .bin part first. I got a screen with green block scrolling and a BEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEP. Then I added the -f3 switch and VOILA! It came up fine. Thanks, Michael. Now I can play....er....EXPERIMENT (better word) with the source file and see what does what.

I'm trying to learn how to use Distella and DASM. I'm using Combat to try it out. I disassembled it fine. I've looked at the .s file and it looks fine. I then tried DASM with the following command "DASM -OCOMBAT". The resulting .bin file doesn't run on Stella. I have a black screen with rapid beeping. What am I doing wrong?
