@roadrunner: I don't particularly care about the Marvel movies, either. I know that puts me in the minority, but by now I'm used to it. But as Nathan says, to each their own.

  2. All-new Artie the Atari comic strips for the next two weeks! (Note: "new" not to be confused with "original" or "funny") http://atariage.com/forums/blog/118/entry-15667-haters-gonna-hate/

Haha! Love it! I always enjoy it and look forward to it! Keep it up Nathan!

  3. Waiting for the NyQuil to kick in. You'd think something that tastes that terrible would work better.

I did a whole buncha stuff to get over a cold recently: Drank tons of OJ and apple juice, ate garlic on stuff (esp potatoes=virus fighter), superdose Vitamin C, echinacea, lots of sleep and vitamins...That cold never stood a chance!

Oh and VapoRub all over if I felt it in my chest!

I thought the "universal cure" was chicken noodle soup.

  5. The closest metaphor I could think of for what I'm working on right now is: Trying to hammer a nail using a chainsaw. Yeah... you can probably do it, but it really isn't necessary, and it's just going to end up being a big mess.

    1. CPUWIZ

      CPUWIZ

But the real question is, do you really need the nail?

    2. Flojomojo

When the only tool you have is a chainsaw, everything starts to look like a 14nm AMD Ryzen APU.

  7. No matter how many times they keep reminding me, for some reason I keep forgetting to "Like" and "Subscribe" every single YouTube video I happen to watch. Either I'm getting forgetful in my old age, or I just don't like being annoyed.

Thanatos: Depending on what you like to watch, some may be restricted as adult content which requires you to login to verify you're mature to watch it. Atari gameplay may not be affected by this.

  8. Most of the items in the vending machine at work are $1.25. But you can't actually put 25¢ into it, because the vending machine doesn't take change. Only bills and debit cards. If you put in two $1 bills, it will give you change that you can't use in it. And if you put a $5 bill in it, it gives you back dollar coins, which you also can't use in it. I didn't know Apple was making vending machines.

I use my Apple Watch for vending machine purchases, so I don't have to go into my pockets like an animal.

Using a $20 bill in the metro farecard machine to add $1 in credit and getting back 19 golden Sacagawea dollar coins as change is one of the great pleasures of life.

Also, my body outputs lots of things that I wouldn't want to put into it. What's the problem?

    3. pacman000

      pacman000

Use a debit card & make the owners pay a fee for not accepting coins. (Credit & Debit card companies charge a fee for every transaction.)

    4. Nathan Strum

      Nathan Strum

The machine charges the user a fee - so it costs extra to use a debit card.

  9. I'm beginning to understand all of the Apple hatred that's out there... my new Mac Mini is effectively DOA. It won't stop kernel panicking, despite doing multiple clean-reinstalls of the OS (multiple, because it would fail to complete some of them). It could be the third-party RAM I installed, but the alternative was paying an extra $300 in Apple RAM Extortion Fees™. So now I get the joy of opening the thing back up, and reinstalling the stock 8GB.

    2. Nathan Strum

      Nathan Strum

Carlsson - I still have to put the stock ones back in. If the Mac itself is bad, it will crash right away. If the third-party RAM was bad, it will run fine. The problem is, the RAM is non-trivial to replace, and the oddball Torx bit I need is at work. I don't feel like going in to get it during my weekend off.

MrMaddog - I've replaced RAM in hundreds of Macs over 30 years. It's part of my job. That's why this is so frustrating.

    3. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

Two possibilities: the RAM is bad (possible) or it's not the rated speed (also possible). The Mac Mini is expecting DDR4-2666, not the slower and more common DDR4-2400. If you got exactly the right spec I'd just get the seller to swap it out. I always buy on Amazon from Amazon direct for stuff like this, because it's super easy to have them ship you replacements immediately if you're a Prime member.

    4. Nathan Strum

      Nathan Strum

It read as the correct speed on the Mac (when it ran), and I've never gotten the wrong product from DMS. If the RAM is bad, they have a lifetime warranty on it.

  10. My new Mac Mini left Hong Kong at 8:26 PM, 2/11/19, and arrived in Anchorage, Alaska at 3:25 PM, 2/11/19 – five hours earlier. At this rate it will get here yesterday!

  12. I shouldn't have mocked Apple in my status update the other day... just a few hours after I did, my iMac died. I'm flattered they apparently read my profile feed... but that's just mean-spirited.

      Nathan Strum

At the moment, it's working again. Maybe because I spent money at the Apple store last night on a couple of new hard drives, and I appeased their wrath.

    4. Nathan Strum

      Nathan Strum

Spoke too soon. Still randomly shutting down. Now I have to figure out if I want to pay money to fix a seven-year-old iMac, or pay money to buy a "brand-new" one that hasn't been updated in two years.

  13. Dear Apple: If it will help you make a new Mac Pro, I'll happily send you a bag of screws. https://www.macrumors.com/2019/01/28/2013-mac-pro-postponed-us-screw-shortage/

Not impossible, just not efficient. We don't have anything at the scale of Shenzhen's manufacturing.

    3. DZ-Jay

      DZ-Jay

We don't *right now*. But neither did China before Apple started partnering with the manufacturers there to ramp up production scale.

Notice that the US manufacturer was able to produce at scale before, they just reduced production, staff, and retooled because all USA manufacturers left for China. If they come back, why couldn't they do it again?

It will take an investment, but not different than the original investment put into China.

    4. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

It's also worth remembering that in America, workers won't (generally) work themselves to death. In Shenzhen they don't get a choice.

It's also great on Nintendo Switch, with fast, responsive controls. Such a great game. It's like what us 80s kids imagined games of the future would look like.

  16. Well, that's the last time I'm ever using PrimeTime airport shuttles. Five minutes after they were supposed to pick me up to leave for the airport, they called me and canceled my ride. No backup driver, no offer to find an alternative, nothing. Had to call a cab to get a last minute ride. Not a great way to start a vacation, but at least I did make my flight.

I never had a problem with SuperShuttle. I'm sure there are cheaper options, but they were extremely reliable for me when I was traveling frequently for business.

      Hah, I got you.

Form 2 is SLA based. You'll be able to create some neat stuff on that, for sure. And the resin does stink. :P

  19. I'd like to believe that the reason the DMV is so horrible to deal with is that they have a terribly difficult, complicated job to do, and it's not because they're incompetent and/or they hate people. I'd like to believe that anyway...
