  1. My parents' washing machine uses what sounds remarkably like the 'coin collected' sound from the original Mario Bros. as feedback for certain keypresses.

A lot of point of sale machines use the Sonic ring noise. It's freaky!

It's probably a subliminal message to get ready to pony up some coin to get the machine fixed if it dies. I removed the loud annoying buzzer from the dryer that was like 100 decibels. I don't need to know when the load is done.

  2. Life is not fair. This is inherent to existence, and, if it was, humans would've died out long ago due to personal preference.

Can totally relate. Ours can produce this super pungent/acidic piss that besides making your eyes water, peeled paint right off the walls! :-(

In the last month, they managed to put two major hits on my credit score. Disputed both. One was removed in three hours; still fighting the other one even though they've admitted it's their fault. Two hours on the phone with them later, their response is, 'gee, that isn't right'.

  9. In the film 'The World's End', Simon Pegg's character nailed exactly who I was when I finished school, right down to the Sisters of Mercy T-shirt and long coat. Granted, I went in for Ray-Ban Baloramas and could only afford to drive a 1.6-litre Ford Capri as opposed to the 2.8-litre V6 in The Beast that was the Granada... But the last of the Cornetto Trilogy really nailed the tail end of my adolescence, and made me glad that I progressed beyond it without having one iota of...

Regret? (Sry, just trying to finish that last sentence there)...Yeah that was a great movie! I kind of lived the American version, but with a 1972 Mustang and a Metallica shirt.

  10. Comet is showing The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. Only happened across it near the end and it's full of ads, but it's just reminded me of how long it's been since I sat down and watched this. Might have to make time for that this weekend.

I purchased the steel book blu-ray a few months ago because it has a new documentary (which is fantastic). One of my favorite sci-fi/comedies of all time.

  12. If I'm going to have to get up early on a Sunday in order to give a field service engineer physical access to a piece of failed equipment, make sure you're not sending out the guy who falls into the STAND BACK I'M A PROFESSIONAL! category. That attitude that early in the day on a weekend is not going to go well for him.

In 1984, I had aluminium shavings from under a circular saw flick up into both my eyes when I was cleaning the machine. It was horrible and I spent hours at the hospital as they tried to clean out my eyes. I got lucky with no lasting damage.

Long story short: 75% vision in left eye, 40% in right eye. No permanent damage, but will take a few days to heal. No contact lenses for a week and plenty of goopy things to drop into my eyes in the meantime - got one mean abrasion on the right eye. Lucky, all things considered, she said.

  20. Trying to update the EFI on a VMware server. Booted to EFI, pointed it at the EFI update Dell claimed could be installed via EFI. Got an error message stating that you can only update the EFI via Windows. Now stuck in the hell of creating a USB-bootable Windows 10 installation just to do this. Joy!
