  1. @BinaryStar: Good that you found this topic, Chris, and thank you very much for offering some extra cartridges. (Two weeks ago I've posted a comment for Galaxy Wars SL pointing to this Vectrex HSC on your website but I guess you haven't seen it.)

@jbrodack: Cool that you've joined the Vectrex HSC and submitted a first score, Justin. For a start it's a good score - my score posted first was much lower.

@cheeko: Great extra effort to join the Vectrex HSC: You've bought a Galaxy Wars SL cartridge and have registered at AtariAge. Welcome to both AtariAge and the Vectrex HSC - I hope you enjoy playing Vectrex games and Galaxy Wars and look forward to seeing your first scores.

  2. That's good improvements, @Lord Innit and @TheCurlyBard.

    @ Brett @playvectrex:

When posting Nathan's highscore I knew that you would take it as a challenge. But I didn't expect that you would beat Nathan's score that quickly. 😮 Congratulations to your excellent score! And thank you for sharing your experience - still needs very good skills and playing after all. Let's see whether someone can catch up and challenge you, but I much doubt it.

Played some more while listening to TV last night... had a few higher scores from my first, but this was the best ->  71,732
I contemplated waiting until someone beat my original score, but I feel terrible holding onto scores so here it is
    🙇
I will keep playing until I beat my personal best from a couple years back.

Another great score, Brett, congratulations! And thank you for playing fair and not holding back scores. Not sure about your personal best - back in 2021 in Vector War 11 Nathan (limitzer0) scored 87,342.

Mine Storm required control skills and you can get better and better when playing more. For Galaxy Wars / Space Launcher I have the feeling that it's a bit of a lucky game: In Space Launcher, if you are lucky enemies don't shoot right in front of you, and if you are unlucky they do. But I'll play more and will find out.

I suggest Vectrexagon mainly because I dominate at it :-).

Thanks for your suggestion, Carey85. Vectrexagon will definitely be played one day in the Vectrex HSC, then you can show your skills. ;-)

I have a large collection and several homebrews I just don't have that one unfortunately

O.k., I see. Perhaps you can play this round on emulator. Compared to Mine Storm the control of Galaxy Wars SL is simple (at least I think) - perhaps you give it a try. Sure enough this is a workaround and not a really good solution.

@all: Perhaps you can give input for the next played games and thus make help that most players have that very game.

  6. Last night I woke up and couldn't sleep. I played Galaxy Wars and calmed down.

A word on tactics (spoiler) :

    Spoiler

Like @Lord Innit, I also think that it's worth while hunting bright U.F.O.s. First round with all bright UFOs destroyed results in a score of 4,800. A bright UFO is only shown as long as you destroy bright UFOs; it will dissappear in a level as soon as you've destroyed a non-bright UFO.

Note: Some people may want to find out about tactics themselves and/or discuss tactics after a monthly round ended. So I hide this as spoiler.

it is the multi cart 3.0

A good choice - plenty of games on that one. We should be able to find a game for the April round that is on your SK Multicart 3.0 and other multicartridges and thus at hand of many people.

I am in the same situation. I think, to have more players, it could be nice to play first to the original releases.

Sure enough it's no good if you and Mickey (and possibly even more people) can't participate a round because you don't own required hardware. Only "work around" I see atm is using emulation - as jgkspsx has pointed out, already. DrSnuggles Emulator and ParaJVE are good alternatives but sure enough it's not the real thing.

If you like Vectrex playing I recommend to invest 100 USD for Richard Hutchinson's VecMulti. A "flashable" cartridge like the VecMulti comes with many games and allows for downloading, "flashing" and playing every free Vectrex binary which is cool. PiTrex or VecFever are alternatives but PiTrex seems a bit more complicated to achieve and set up and VecFever is very hard to find.

  9. @Paul: Thank you for your introducing me above, Paul, which puts a smile on my face but makes me a bit blush. 😊 Really great that you've initiated and now organize this Vectrex HSC! And cool that I can assist you in doing so.

@All: Right, I assist Paul as co-organisator of the Vectrex HSC. But Paul is the "front man" of the Vectrex HSC. Thank you all for participating, for nice discussions and comments and the good start with 11 players. Let's make this Vectrex HSC a nice place for everyone who likes playing Vectex games.

  10. Playing Mine Storm was a challenging and I'm nosey how Galaxy Wars SL plays.

Some Vectrex games that come to my mind and that I'd like to play:

Rocks 'n' Saucers (free binary available)

    Sea Pub (free binary available)

    Vyrzon

    Vector Pilot

    Vectrexians

    Count Vecula

    Vectrexagon

Hera Primera (once it is widely available)

    Protector

    Vectorblade

Most of them are commercial homebrew games but I guess many of the players here possess these games.

You can direct link a rom like this:
    https://drsnuggles.github.io/jsvecx/?rom=http://binarystarsoftware.com/bin/GWSL_v102_FREE.BIN

... and as i just found this somehow triggers the display readme function.
Will bugfix this soon, meanwhile please click right mouse button to skip text.

Great, this makes playing Galaxy Wars SL even simpler. But remember: Emulation is good but on the real thing vectors look so much cooler. 😎

Here comes the first score. I've been better in Vector War, but I'm happy to start with this level again. 😁

    ...

Ah, Marc, you've beaten me by 34 minutes and with a much higher score. Well done!

Here comes my very first score after 10 minutes of playing:

    7,386 - Original Vectrex hardware

  12. Thank you, MattPilz for joining in and posting your score on the very last day of the February round. And thanks for your short review / experience report - Mine Storm positively surprised me also even though I think it's a pretty tough game.

Unfortunately, in this Vectrex club no Atari speed ups and Atari modifications are allowed; this also includes woodgrain-vinyl wraps. So your score is invalid. O.k., I'm just joking. ;-) Again, welcome and I look forward to seeing more scores of you in coming rounds!

I made a small advertisement in the VFU group...

The post disappeared at first repeatedly, but my last try seems to be good now in VFU.

Cool, thanks, Marc. Let's see whether people of VFU read your post and join in. Before, Paul has posted twice and for some reason I don't know I haven't seen his posts until just now. ATM, at VFU there are so many "Welcome our newest member" posts that it's even harder to see actual contents and useful information. 😞

Something to consider for the next game, a proposal... if any tactically late submissions, that upset the top 3 order, come in such that they cannot be attempted to be beaten... maybe a sudden death overtime for those involved at the top can be implemented in some way.  Time is extended by 6 hours and 1 final score for all top players may be submitted in that time, or something?

Each round lasts for a month(!) and I hope that people take scoring and ranking in the Vectrex High Score Club easy. If some keen people want to post scores at last minute they can do so. It's not really fair but prolonguing a round for some few hours doesn't make it much fairer - especially considering that there are players spread all over the world with different time zones. That's just my 2 cents.

    Hi fellow Vector Warriors,

    Vorkosigan is here. 😄

    ...

Great that you've found your way here, Marc, and even registered as a new AtariAge user. 😎 Level 8 means that you could get past the magnetic fireball mine (Level 4) and the two magnetic mines (Level 6) which is a good achievement.

  15. Darryl's strategy guide offers really good tips for playing Mine Storm. And watching Brett's high score video proof at Twin Galaxies is als helpful.

One thing helped me to improve my ship control:

Use Thrust button (button 3) as if it was a fire button which means that you press it and release it right away. Press/"fire" more often if you want to fly faster and less often to fly slower. And never press and hold the Thrust button (unless you want to loose control over your ship ;-) )
