  1. Starlost was the early 70s, not post SW; it was originally supposed to be a new-tech special effects heavy series about a generation ship that suffered an accident and was knocked off course; the main characters rushed around to find the "backup bridge" to get the ship back on course even though they appeared amish.  Keir dullea played the main character and walter koenig was in some of the later episodes.  Harlan ellison and ursula leguin were involved but it because such a clusterfuck (and the effects that they ended up using were so awful) that they both dropped out (I believe).

my dad and I watched this when it originally aired and we were *so* excited because it was new sci-fi on teev!  and then it seemed like it mostly just disappeared, although tantalizingly, bits and pieces would pop up here and there unexpectedly.  It wasn't until the advent of the internet that I was actual able to verify that it wasn't a fever dream and that it actually existed.

the episodes are now on youtube and you can see them here:

    there's a wiki entry:

    it's a whole crazy story.

finding info about this was def recapturing part of my childhood.

one of the episodes even had GIANT BEES, which scared the shit out of me as a 5 year old...

  2. I'm doing ok, everyone.  thankfully, I had a very mild case.  feverish and achey for a few days, then it subsided into sore throat, congestion, headache and fatigue.

my quarantine ended two weekends ago and I called a doctor friend of mine to ask what that actually means?  was I free to ride the subway maskless?  Am I now immune and super powered?

he basically said that a) no one really knows but, b) it looks like infection does not necessarily prevent from getting reinfected and that c) the virus is mutating so even if one is immune, one might not be immune to a particular strain.  and since this is all over the place, it's worse than the flu.  So the recommendation was to continue to avoid potential exposure, meaning continue to spend most of my time at home.

I went into work once last week and may go in twice this week, but am probably going to keep it down at that level for the rest of the year.  and I still get tired really easily...I can sleep 12 hours a day without any problem so spending time up to do work or schoolwork has been a challenge.

but thank you, everyone, for your concern

    and just remember...

  3. I just came back from a vacation and saw it at a 9 AM showing in times square. I may try and go this weekend and see it in a fuller theater in 3D to get the full effect.

I thought that the interweaving of the stories (there were something like 5 or 6 parallel stories working around each other) was masterful.

the whole think was sort of breathtaking.

@Maddog, I would recommend Captain Marvel. For a big billion-dollar explodey blockbuster, it's very quiet and reflective. I saw it twice and thought that it was terrific.

  4. I would actually love to see Henry Cavill with an appropriate story, decent script and no moustache. He's not as "bumbly" as I would like when he portrays Clark, but with the right director (and script and story) who knows? I feel like they really haven't served him, or the character well. I hope that he doesn't get too bogged down in playing Geralt.

It's a testament to the quality of the 1978 superman movie, and DC's ineptitude, that they have not been able to do justice to the character in the movies since then.

  5. Maybe this is the beginning of DC finally understanding that with a back catalog as large as theirs, and plans to make a million movies, they are much better served by making different types of movies.

In the same way that marvel has created movies with different tones (First Avenger - period piece; Winter Soldier - political thriller; Ant Man - caper flick, Guardians of the Galaxy - humorous, etc) DC could easily do something similar with it's characters: Batman - gritty (check!), Wonder Woman - optimistic (check!), Aquaman - bonkers (check!). They would just need to figure out how Superman (actually patriotic, as opposed to jingoistic) and the Flash (flashy?) fit into the milieu.

So it seems like they are already on their way, even if they don't know they are.

That's my hope anyway! Aquaman and Wonder Woman were both *really* fun. WW was actually a terrific movie, and Aquaman was just so silly that it was totally worth it and I would be *happy* to see something similar.
