  1. Atari made the mistake of reselling the same game with better graphics that they had available on every other system they ever made for years. There was no creativity in games from Atari anymore. There was no killer app like SMB or Zelda. There were no RPGs or side scrolling games that the NES had multiples of. Atari's marketing was near non existent. I remember the first time I ever saw an 7800 was at a Federated that was shutting down. TRU never seemed to have carried it. Even today, the graphics of the 7800 have never surpassed the NES.

You built a paddle controller for Tempest??? SWEET!!! Please post some pics as well as a link so I can get one too. :)  Also, does it work the same as a trak-ball (in other words does it move the zapper around like the paddle in Super Breakout or does it act like the CX52 joystick on Centipede (in a two-speed variant, where you have to return the stick to center to stop moving)

The plans are somewhere around here. You basically replace the POTS in the the joystick with one from a 2600 paddle controller and a resistor.  It's pretty easy.

  4. Back when I was a teenager, I wrote lots of games on my heavily modified Atari 400. I typed in every program from Analog and Antic back then. They taught me how to program.  It was great to upgrade to a 130XE. I never had a 5200 as a kid.I skipped it and upgraded to a Colecovision when my heavy sixer when south.  It was fun to download the Glen the 5200 man's roms on local BBSs to get a taste of the 5200.  Pac-man Jr, Xevious and Space Dungeon on the 8-bits were a lot of fun.

  5. A few years ago I bought a 2 port 5200 in a damaged case. I was able to find another 4 port 5200 in a perfect case but the motherboard was damaged.  I put the 2 port MB in the 4 port case and upgraded the video out to composite/S-video. That s-video is feed to another box that converts to hdmi. The system works great with my Atarimax cart. I've repaired the controllers and built a paddle controller for Tempest. I have the trackball and the wico joystick/keyboard system for it. I don't play it much but it is the star of my collection.

  6. I originally didn't have either. I had a 400 instead that was later replaced with a 130XE. It taught me how to program. All of the 5200 library was ported over by Glen The 5200 man back then so I didn't miss much. Now I have a 5200 and XEGS. The 5200 is out in the game room and is played regularly. It just fits better with the other systems and looks mean.

I am actually more bothered by the dark line segments. Does anyone have any ideas where they could be coming from?

The dark line segments on the left are normal and part of the game.

The black lines are the result of using a programming trick developed by Larry Kaplan that uses what's called an HMOVE command.  If an HMOVE is initiated immediately after HBlank starts (which is the case when HMOVE is used as documented), the [HMOVE] signal is latched and used to delay the end of the HBlank by exactly 8 CLK, or two counts of the HSync Counter.  This is achieved in the TIA by resetting the HB (HBlank) latch on the [LRHB] (Late Reset H-Blank) counter decode rather than the normal [RHB] (Reset H-Blank) decode.  The extra HBlank time shifts everything except the Playfield right by 8 pixels, because the position counters will now resume counting 8 CLK later than they would have without the HMOVE.  This is also the source of the HMOVE 'comb' effect; the extended HBlank hides the normal playfield output for the first 8 pixels of the line:

  8. Whenever I try to ignore someone, the system posts that they wrote something but won't let me see it. That is good but I would prefer to not even know they posted. However, when someone quotes that ignored person, I see what the ignored person said. That kind of defeats the purpose of ignore. Is there anyway that can be fixed?

I have the Mega Everdrive Pro and the Mega SD. I prefer the Mega SD. Some Sega CD games don't work on the MEP. Everything seems to work fine on the MSD.

What Sega cd game doesn't work on the MEP? All of mine seem to work.
