  1. A guy who kept a bunch of rare Game Boy games in his attic found the plastic was all destroyed. I was going to switch to plastic totes for storing cartridges instead of cardboard boxes, but now I'm thinking no...

Why does he have so many identical carts!? What a tosser.

In all seriousness, no idea what caused it, but the NES carts I've kept in a plastic bin for years are totally fine.

We had the complete 1990 World Book encyclopedia, and I still read those well into the 90s. Good stuff.

What the rooster gets is not the part of the chicken I want!

  6. is it out of the question for me to ask for help when developing for retro hardware? I'm not the type that likes to code for long hours. Perhaps i could give a layout and others do the programming?

    Just curious

Help is one thing, but asking others to do the work that you don't want to do is poor form.

  7. I have been testing out this app for managing my retro game collections.  Unfortunately, as I use a de-Googled device, I am only able to freely use a single console (Atari 2600.)  It has some short-comings, like no provision for label variations, but otherwise seems pretty good.

Do you use something like this?  If so, what do you use?

Yeah, I'm with Albert on this. What's wrong with Filezilla or some other standalone FTP client? I don't want my browser to be the jack of all apps.

  11. Why does Google Translate leave numbers 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 as digits when translating from Japanese to English, but write out Four and Five when the original source also gave those as digits?

    1. Rhomaios

      Rhomaios

Because it's not very good at translating. It uses a neural network to understand a language, so it's only as good as its sources. And who knows what patterns it's picking up on that would be arbitrary to us but technically significant to it?

  12. One benefit of this whole last year or so is that I no longer feel the need to get / pay for haircuts!  I've really improved around the "cutting my own hair" arena.
I mean, my hair cutting skill hasn't improved at all..
But my acceptance of my own bad haircuts has really improved quite a bit!!!!

I got a Philips beard trimmer that has guards long enough that I can use it on my sides, and I actually have been getting very good at using scissors, too! Keep going at it, eventually you'll improve. I do have a small hand mirror, though, and that makes all the difference for the back.

  13. Archaeologists have discovered the first ever what they are calling motion video/graphics. It dates from ancient Greece and is sort of like the Antikythera Mechanism. It is a complex geared device with a space for these sort of key like things that are separate from the device itself. The device is connected to a large abacus like thing with hundreds of beads connected to the device via levers. They put one of the key things into the device (fit precisely) and cranked it, and the abacus thing showed an animal running. This is the first storage media we know of. One of the other key cylinders produced a graphic of a well endowed woman with obvious breasts bouncing up and down. This is being called potentially the first ever porn movie in existence. Most baffling is the phrase "Please be kind, Rewind" that is written in ancient Greek on each of the cylinders.

John, do you have relevant info on this somewhere that I can look up? I decided not to sell anything ebay anyway, but it would be good to see what the actual statutes are.

  17. What's the better console?

    XEGS or 7800?

    1. Rhomaios

      Rhomaios

7800. It can play 2600 games, plus the 7800 games that weren't ports were better than the 8bit versions. 2-player on Centipede and a decade of excellent homebrew/aftermarket games make it the better deal in my opinion.

  19. I always get nervous when an ebay seller doesn't leave feedback for the buyer. It's almost like they're not confident in their product and waiting to see what feedback they receive from the buyer... I hope my friggen item is what i wanted and in working order. Too much money to be stuffed around.

    1. Rhomaios

      Rhomaios

But what happens when the seller leaves a feedback and the buyer turns out to complain about trivialities or try to pull a scam? Plus, plenty of buyers already don't leave feedback on positive transactions. So the buyer who did jack all gets a positive but the seller, whose feedback other buyers actually care about, gets nothing? It makes no sense.

I always thought that getting feedback for being a buyer was unfair. The selling part is much more important than the buying. "Great buyer!" Really? All they did was pay.

Feedback should only be for sellers. It's not like any sellers read a buyer's feedback before shipping an item.

  23. I feel so utterly disconnected from modern pop culture.  I don't really watch current TV, Movies, watch sports or listen to current music.  People are talking about the Mandalorian online and i'm just like "huh?"

I'm with jaybird3rd. I don't have enough time to stay at the forefront. I'm still catching up with movies from 10-20 years ago, let alone 1-5. I will on occasion listen to new music, but everything else listed here, sports, TV, games, even books, I just miss out on. And I'm 100% ok with that.
