Here's my current top 5, minus Donkey Kong, Mario, shmups, and RPGs: Super Metroid Mega Man X Contra III Super Castlevania IV Zombies Ate My Neighbors Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Yeah, I know there are six. Also, here are a few hidden gems: Demon's Crest Kirby's Dream Course Legend of Mystical Ninja Pocky and Rocky Sky Blazer RPGs you should definitely look into: Final Fantasy IV/V/VI (only IV, as II, and VI, as III, were released in the US) Secret of Mana (easy to get into!) Soul Blazer, with the sequels Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma Ogre Battle (its sequel on the N64 was the only good RPG for that system, and imo beats even most of PS1's best RPGs) Affordable shmups: Gradius III Darius Twin Phalanx Earth Defense Force UN Squadron (Somewhat or very) expensive but excellent: R-Type III Aero Wings Syvalion (JP only) Axelay (used to be dirt cheap, wow did it suddenly spike!) Pop N Twinbee

The US PS1 version of Strikers 1945 II (aka Strikers 1945) removes TATE. Personally, I've found the Saturn version to be better, but I haven't played the PS1 imports yet.

I'd buy a Famicom Disk System and a giant lot of Famicom games, after which I'd slowly start selling off my NES collection.

Which version of 2nd/3rd gen games is best?
Rhomaios replied to Rhomaios's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Do you have any specifics in mind? I admit to being unfamiliar with most of its ports. -

Fair enough! My opinion isn't the be all and end all. And which are the "early GBCs" v. later ones? I do indeed play it on a teal GBC. I've played Galaga 88 in the arcades. That's a separate game though, so I didn't want to include it. I can't imagine the Game Gear or the Sharp X68K beating out the TG-16, though. -

Rhomaios replied to Rhomaios's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I meant superficially: small screen, black and white, limited sound... It's not my preferred way to play the game, although I have it for on the road. My point though isn't to laud individual titles, but to "pick" one as the best. I don't want to keep expanding my collection (although Galaga is probably the one exception), but tighten it. -
Lately instead of expanding I've been wanting to consolidate and tighten my collection. However, going through game by game trying to find the "best" version is quite a daunting task. So I come to you experts in hopes that maybe I can compile some definitive list of the best of ports. Maybe we can even order the ports from best to worst in case someone doesn't have the console for the best game, but does for the second or third best port. Also, please indicate if the game can be found outside of the 2nd/3rd gen, for example Frogger on the Genesis or Pac-Man on the many Namco collections. I'll start with what I know best: Galaga (1981) NES > 7800 > MSX > SG-1000 > Game Boy Best compilation containing it: Namco 50th Anniversary (PS2, Xbox, GCN equally good) Note: The Game Boy version was released as Galaga & Galaxian. Commentary: The NES version is the cleanest looking, although it differs from the arcade in that it doesn't have a "throbbing" swarm. The 7800 has worse graphics, although the enemy movement is closer to the original. The MSX and SG-1000 are the simplest in terms of graphics and sound, and of course the Game Boy is what you'd expect from a Game Boy game.

Post your favorite underrated consoles
Rhomaios replied to xDragonWarrior's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The library is excellent? Not even a little bit. Kolibri is good, Star Wars is overrated, Knuckles Chaotix is vastly inferior to the other 16 bit Sonics, Doom is a crappy port. Virtua Fighter is severely date, though Virtua Racer Deluxe is still not bad. Metal Head was terrible, Motocross Champion was unfinished, Mortal Kombat II was so ubiquitous a title that it hardly counts, Spiderman is way too expensive to try, and Space Harrier and After Burner are the same damn game that came out for the Genesis and Master System. To be fair, I haven't played Tempo, Blackthorne, or Zaxxon, but we're not left with much. As far as underrated, the Saturn deserves a spot. I'd say the Saturn's library beats the Dreamcast's any day. -
I for one, am NOT excited about the new Xbone
Rhomaios replied to Rev's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Just another reason to stay true to the classics. -
1993 did have some good games, such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Bomberman, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors, in addition to what Drixxel said. It was a good year, and SFII/MK just absolutely dominated. But I think 1994 was when it really got good. MKII and SSFII were way bigger hits than their predecessors, and MMX was the only thing I would play for a while. Donkey Kong Country, Demon's Crest, and Super Metroid were just icing on the cake. Also, in 1991-1992 I was more into Sega than Nintendo, so that perhaps colors my memory.

I'd still buy it. In a heartbeat.

Not to derail this further, but this is true, while I think opcode's is ideal but not quite accurate. I don't see a crash on the proportions stated, and I do see a real need to have an open gaming system that is *free to try*, but not necessarily 100% free to pay. I doubt very many games will do in-app purchases as their primary source of income. The alternatives are demos. Even though right now "free to win" is a successful strategy, it doesn't work, I think, in the long run, so the Ouya is pushing other strategies out there, and believe it or not, it's not just about smart phone games. I know several developers (some impersonally) and have heard of even greater things, and basically I am happy to see an open platform which encourages small indie titles, because personally I don't care for the pomp and circumstance which accompanies Call of Duty 5. Instead, I prefer the simpler format of VVVVVV. While the latter may not be possible on the CV2 (at least in its current form, but hey, maybe it can), I would much prefer it on an open platform than on a DRM-pushing service like Steam. That's my main draw to the Ouya and why I kickstarted it: DRM-free indie platformers. We just need to advertise it better. Tomorrow I'll spread word to various forums I frequent, if opcode so wishes.
-
I'd love to see more third-party support, heck, I'd love to see a publisher with real carts too like what AtariAge does. But I still don't see how it can compete with the Ouya, unless you mean that a port of Manbow 2 would otherwise end up there.
-
Not necessarily...I won't give up my original CV just because I get a CV2. I'm sure most collectors of the machine will feel the same way. It will be nice, however, not to have to depend on 30-year-old hardware which may eventually become unrepairable. Not everyone may opt to buy a CV2, as well, although like the SGM, I'm sure they will sell quickly. Is it such a bad thing? If this can play CV and CV2 (or Super CV, or whatever else it will be called, though personally something more exciting and less similar to existing consoles [so no 2, no Super, no Mega, no 16 {since it will be 16 bit}]) games, why wouldn't we drop the old for the new? So long as it has perfect compatibility, there won't be a reason for the old CV. Now, if compatibility isn't perfect, then I cannot imagine the CV ever going away. This is why I have a Power Base Converter for my Genesis, but I have a PlayStation and a PS2 still.

I didn't know anyone modded the 7800. I'm definitely going to get this done! You'll get a PM soon! -
Ha! That was the exact same thought I had. Good suggestion!

Can we have a separate NES section here at AA?

Problem solved! This is what I've been saying! -
Can we have a separate NES section here at AA?
Rhomaios replied to atarilovesyou's topic in Classic Console Discussion
That would be the Classic Gaming forum. General topic non-Atari chatter. Then, inside that it is broken down into other retro consoles of the same general generation. I think it's a pretty logical layout. No tangled mess that I perceive. Well, under Classic gaming there is the NES high score club, and under High Scores club there is the NES high score club... That's what I was referring to. I understand what you're getting at, but both links refer to the same forum. The High Scores Club section just aggregates all of the HSCs under one topic. That makes sense to me. Oh, yeah, it makes sense to me now, but I was only referring to it being daunting...I guess I should have specified "to a new person". Or at least it was to me. I think any more non-Atari sub-forums would just add to that confusion. Just my 2c.
