  1. Does no one like the idea of an icon (knights head, etc.)? That way you could get the best of both worlds. i.e. using a little bit of 5200 graphic polish as well as retaining the gameplay dynamics and movement of the original square

  3. I have to say that although I started out by saying keep it a square.. I actually wouldn't have any objections to an icon symbol such as a Knights helmet like Godzilla suggested above. i.e. I don't like the idea of an animated character.. But an ICON of something (cross/helmet/etc.) I think would work fine and keep the spirit of the characters gameplay movement and actions etc. Or.. of course, how hard could it be to offer a choice
  4. Try doing a search. The search option is usually up there on the top right. I did a search on your nickname and this came right up: http://www.atariage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb...c&f=16&t=000310
  5. quote aah. You're right! I thought you were talking about VIDEO GAMES not VIDEO GAMES PLAYER. But yeah sorry about that. I actually have that VGP aug/sep issue as well (with an article about the 5200 vs the Colecovision) but again the covers missing and it's slightly molded hehehe
  6. WOOHOO! Cuttle Cart kicks ass! With all of my collection at home 7000 miles away this is the next best thing to being there
  7. Apparently my Cuttle cart arrived too.. but I wasn't home so they left it with the apt. manager who closes at 6.. *sigh* guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow
  8. I bought one of those years ago.. Unfortunately it's missing several games now as rom releases since then have prompted my cart to be less than 100% I think Sean does do updates.. for a price though *sigh* ;D
  9. quote There are a number of posts regarding Indenture on this site (do a search).. including ones where a couple of people expressed interest in mapping it. If you've done it, I'm sure many would love to see it
  10. quote Rob is a very nice and helpful guy. Actually also, if you download the pacman26 rom off his SITE, it has his notes within the Zip file on how he did that particular hack, which might be of some interest to you. When it comes to hacks of existing games(as opposed to homebrews) Pac26 has got to be up there as one of the best as he not only changed the graphics/mazes but he also added sounds (e.g. the ghost's 'siren') as well as other things like making the fruit stay in one place rather than prancing around etc... coming up with one great game of pacman.
  11. well super mario all stars on the snes is different from the super mario's on the old NES. So that's not really the same thing as playing on a cuttle cart/supercharger. That is: In a blind test where you can't physically see the vcs console, you theoretically shouldn't be able to tell whether you're playing moon patrol on the Cuttle vs. playing an original cart (with the exception of the hassle in loading a game)... Speaking of which I'm anxiously awaiting the delivery of mine That said, think it's totally valid wanting to have a copy of the original cartridge for it's collectibility and artwork etc. and overall nifty-ness. I TOTALLY agree with that. And I think the majority here do as well But personally, I just can't realistically think I'm going to own every 2600 game I want, so the cuttle cart fits that void quite nicely.
  12. I definitely have Sept. 83. I'm not sure about August. It's hard to tell because the covers are gone from all of them (hey.. I was a kid) And unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's any reference to the issue #/Date in any of the pages inside. it's kind of odd... I'm not willing to part with them as I love all my old videogame literature and mags but I'd be willing to scan anything they're looking for in them.

    Game God

I am really good at Coin-Op Space Invaders: I can easily score in the 70k range and beyond but pretty much quit at that point out of boredom or lack of time. PartII/Deluxe is another story.. that game is hard! You can check out one of my mame .inp files here. Although you may have to refresh after clicking I also think I'm pretty good at the coin-op Defender and Robotron. Although I'm FAAR from the top players of these games, I can hit a million in robotron in medium difficulty and can hang longer in Defender than the avg. player. I also used to think I was ok at Donkey Kong but obviously I wasn't THAT good ;p
  14. quote quote: I 100% prefer the "real deal" as far as playing goes. My computer has never been sullied with one of those emulators... ever! Well let me tell you.... every single one of my computers at work are totally "sullied" with emulators and roms of all sorts. People who pit playing emulators vs. playing the real thing miss the point. Of course emulation can't substitute for the real deal. I mean come on, thats not exactly enlightening. The real thing can be experienced just fine when I'm at home relaxing on my couch in front of an actual TV. But while I'm stuck in a air conditioned Data Center in a basement somewhere in Seattle on a slow day, it's just a great feeling that I could pull up Chase the Chuckwagon or any other of the other thousands or roms/games and play them right then and there. Now THAT my friends is what it's all about. We're pretty spoiled these days with the advanced states of the emulation scene so it's easy to rag on them. But it really wasn't all that long ago that the very thought that it would be possible to store roms for the entire 2600 catalog and actually play them in a different medium was a VERY exciting idea! Remember the early releases of Virtual VCS? I just about blew a load when I managed to locate an image of "Commando" - a game I'd always wanted, and tried to run it and got a little green dot on the top-left corner of my monitor. (i.e. it didn't work but the potential was there) What's my point? It's ALL good
  15. (pardon my train of thought typing but it's late) lol I just checked back in this thread and I guess I started somewhat of a debate over the whole "dot" character Quite honestly, I was just trying to be irreverant as usual... but upon further introspection, maybe not. I thought about it and basically I guess this is what I was thinking: Ok take that nice picture of the castle and then insert your updated character graphic of choice and move him around...Any humanoid type character with maybe a helmet, and a sword or whatever.. Heck even the guy in Dark Chambers. You know what I see? I see NES Dragon Warrior. I see Sega Master System Y's. I see any one of the early Final Fantasy's. Basically, I see those NES era (and beyond) RPG's that quite frankly were all graphically similar in their multitudes. Now take that Castle pic, and insert that little square hero. Make him move around.. and what do you see? I personally see ADVENTURE with updated graphics! Now that's the right flavor! (oddly enough) IMO the Dragons, Environment, Bat, or whatever new obstacle you want to throw at him can have all have updated 5200 graphics but with that square hero it just kind of ties it all back to where it came from at least in my mind. Of course you can do what you will. Maybe you're idea of a square with a helmet could work... or perhaps a 3d-ish "cube". I'm not sure... maybe it could be that character from Agent USA . But I guess I just don't think it should be a humanoid-ish type character. Of course I could be totally wrong... But that's just my INITIAL impression
  16. heheh you guys are right where I was at for a while back in 99 or so.. and let me tell you I've made a couple HUNDRED monstrosities (I can't even bear to talk about some of them). I even put an "appendage" on little old ET. Well anyway, have fun! Hope to see some of your better ones soon
  17. make everything else nice and pretty... but the hero HAS to be a square dot ^_^
  18. That is some REALLY excellent work Rhindle A couple of years ago, I discovered showgfx and editgfx off of Dan's page (I think) and they are indeed great fun. However, I've pretty much lost track of the huge amount of UGLY altered bin files on my HD... (one example being a horrid looking Adventure with a bloated mspacman graphic inserted for the dragons. Again, nice work
  19. quote Exactly.. just like we all have numerous times over the past 25 years. Heck, the 2600 console is so damn old, that if it aint out of your system by now, then it probably never will be. I personally must have stored away my atari stuff for YEARS at a time, several times throughout my 32 year old life depending on what was happening or what phase I was going through. ..And there they remained, safe until the next time..
  20. ack! I failed to see the "Infogrames" in the intial post by Ze_ro.. sorry to have drifted slightly off topic
  21. Well.. If anyone's interested I made a kind of amateur remake of 2600 Space Invaders for the pc using DIV. It's basically the original 2600 graphics with the sounds mixed in from the coin-op... and I also gave the invaders some "galaxian" style attacks Screenshot It's was just more or less a short little hobby project, and the game is faaar from finished and is still kinda buggy. I'm not sure if I will ever get around to finishing it. But it's totally playable as it is.. and fast!.. maybe too fast Anyway, it was all done in good fun. If you'd like, try at your own risk but I think it's mainly compatible with Win9x users as it's DOS based. Also, if you do try it remember to hit ALT-X to exit.. and that's about it. http://www.div-arena.com/dwipdev.phtml?val=27
  22. Good calls on the Bosconian (I think it could be done), Frenzy, Lunar Lander (heck, they did Gravitar didn't they) Rally X Lots of arcade games during the 2600's peak never got translated. I could never list them all but there are quite a good number of them... For example, unsung arcade games such as: PORTMAN MOON CRESTA SKY KID... Would have made great (and possible) 2600 translations. By the way, Pleadies was one of those I always thought about... but lo and behold, there it is. Now, I'd like to see translations of arcade games such as Zookeeper! (where is this?) Heck.. I would even love to see a Space Invaders PartII / Deluxe tranlsation. I think would make an excellent homebrew... (a translation of the ARCADE game that is)
  23. Yes definitely. I like your review a lot by the way. (forgot to mention that)
  24. Well, even in the arcade game the Saucer didn't explode. It just glowed a little brighter then gradually dissapeared all while making a humming sound. So obviously they were trying to get the saucer death close to the arcade version
  25. heheh.. although I was still a kid, I felt pretty burned by Coleco's obvious attempts at making the 2600/intellivision look inferior (and simultaneously snagging a piece of their large user-base pie) by porting and selling piss-poor versions of their licenses to them. And I don't BUY that line that it was "rushed production" or any other reason. I truly believe it was intentional Then again... some people do prefer 2600 Smurfs....*cough*
