I don't like talking about markets, sales, consumer trends and demographics etc because I know nothing about them and it would just be regurgitating what others have written about it. I DO know my personal memory, and spending habits as a gaming consumer back then though. Basically I got a TG16 at launch, and the around week later, a Sega Genesis. I was totally immersed in the 16-bit era and barely bought new games for the SMS & NES anymore unless it was a huge title like Super Mario Bros. 3. It's true it was an eternity (2 years) before the SNES hit the U.S., but speaking purely from my perspective as a gamer then, when it came out the graphics and sound coming from the SNES was an undeniable step up from the Genesis & Turbografx. We may mention Mode 7 as a thing but the reality is Mode 7 was HUGE in the gamer community. Smooth scaling and rotation like that on our consoles was never seen before and we all thought it was amazing. F-Zero had such a huge sense of speed, etc. And then the sound in later games like Actraiser was better than anything we got previously. And with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid hitting hard, the Genesis and TG16 libraries felt almost quaint by that point. SNES really took over our attention, while the TG16 petered out. Anyway as the years went on it became kind of a thing also to compare the Genesis and SNES versions of 3rd party games to see the differences. And we all noticed a jump in quality for Genesis games, e.g. Streets of Rage on down so that was good. I still have tons of favorites on the Genesis (I have one hooked up on my desk right now, while my SNES is in storage). However in the end, back in their heyday while I would still buy Genesis games, I would tend to buy SNES more. And, that's my story.

Got a link to where you got that?

I'd be game for the Defender partycade actually.. which would be the first A1up cab since I bought my (now with broken monitor) 12-1 from their initial offerings. Problem is it's nowhere to be found! Their various products have this weird lifecycle, or single limited runs it seems.

I'm not exactly a 5200 fanatic as some here, but as an original 5200 launch owner (I still have maybe 4 of them including my original) I have to say don't knock the MiSTer implementation of it. Although of course you'd have to jump through hoops if you want to use the trackball, etc. so for those yeah just stick to an original console. But otherwise it's really quite nice to play an FPGA version of the console and it's my preferred way to play 5200 games when I want to, especially Countermeasure.

Yeah I wonder how the joystick for Food Fight is going to be. The original was analog of course and you could stand in one spot and gently point in any direction to shoot without moving your character. I'm suspecting they'll shove in a digital 8-way stick (i.e. worst case scenario) but I'm open to being surprised.

"Whoa... color!" - the official Game Gear thread!
NE146 replied to jgkspsx's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Just saw this topic now.. I was an early adopter of the Game Gear at launch and regularly bought games for it. But yeah to be honest, while I probably played it a little more than the Lynx, it was definitely lagged behind the GameBoy as far as play time. A lot of my GG carts just ended up being stored in my GG carrying case for the most part. The exceptions were Shining Force (of course). I also liked playing Super Space Invaders, and Pengo a bunch. When all was said and done and years later, one game I was surprised had come out on the GG was Galaga 91/Galaga 2 (JP/EU). I was pretty blown away by that fact and kind of kicking myself for not knowing it before as I would have definitely made an effort to pick it up back then. Now though, it's probably not worth the effort though. ? -
The Official Game Boy Thread
NE146 replied to Skippy B. Coyote's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well to be fair nearly all of those are more arcade games whereas Yar's is pretty much pure 2600 pedigree. ? -
One often overlooked one is Famicom Salamander (aka NES Lifeforce). Like Contra, the Japanese version has more features than the US version, including a "surprise" ending reveal like Metroid depending on how many continues you used.

lol it's all good man But if you're thinking it should be weeks and weeks of playing the game non-stop pre-internet, getting lost for ages until finding the one thing needed to move forward, and then eventually triumphing over the game, I'm that guy!! I am one of the PS1 fans who bought PS2 at launch and played through without ever glancing at the guide book. But, there was just zero way I'm repeating that again for the SAME game. Playing through it emulated with speedup is enjoyable for me, which is what I'm looking for... to enjoy a game. On that note that's how I played through a number of previously beaten RPGs again like FF1 and Dragon Warrior/Quest 1 on the NES as well. Speedup makes them fun again as far as I'm concerned. Else it's just too slow! Not worth it for something I've already previously immersed myself and experienced.

Well this thread kind of made me decide to start replaying PS2 for the first time since finishing back in 1989. As I've fully paid my dues back then finishing the game entirely without a walkthrough, and I have zero desire for drudgery now, so I'm playing it on the Switch on Genesis Classics collection using Fast Forward to plow through battles (or grind), and also allowing myself to consult maps, etc. I have to say.. it made me remember my thoughts where I was surprised and ultimately disappointed that with the power of the new and modern Genesis, that there were no 3D dungeons. I remember wondering if it might come as an eventual "surprise" in the game where a 3D dungeon comes into play.. but it never happened. Now looking at it 3 decades later, the overhead dungeons still aren't that great. They're mostly tedious.. bland looking with several areas meant to lead you to dead ends and wander around while you get assaulted non-stop. It just kind of solidified my view of PS1 being a better game than its PS2 or PS3 successors. Anyway it doesn't stop me from moving forward.. I just got past the biolab and am now in the junkyard building with those crazy slimes that regenerate but give you good exp & money.
-
Well to be honest that to me is a big part of the attraction of these things.. i.e. less to play them and more to have them. e.g. I love the cute little Genesis Mini but admittedly I haven't played it even 5 seconds. ? I won't be able to help getting this one too of course.. there's no way to resist But with zero shortage of options to play Genesis games anymore, it'll probably be more for collecting/just-to-have.
-
Well you won't get any argument from me there regarding durability. But if you're not on the go it's hard to beat the switch for Phantasy Star handheld format.. hardware durability notwithstanding. Just saying Also I forgot that GBA version doesn't have PS4.
-
I really liked the GBA port back in the day but just remember it has that random bug where the game might crash when saving in PS1 I believe. Anyway, these days I'd say forget the GBA as if you want to play Phantasy Star 1 on handheld, the Sega Ages version on Switch is the way to go especially with it's various quality of life enhancements. And for PS 2,3,4 the Sega Genesis Classics collection on Switch as well.

I'm pretty confident it'll have Lynx compatibility as advertised... eventually. However, one thing we learned about Analogue is they're slow. Period.
-
No announcement, but the Super NTs were back in stock last August 2021 and lasted for a number of months until Oct/Nov or something. So if I was to guess when the next restock happens, I'd say at best late summer, or around the fall if we're lucky. Just guessing though ? As for any Duo stuff I wouldn't hold my breath anytime soon, but Analogue likes to surprise, but they're also slow.
-
I didn't know at first what DS4 was then I realized it was dual shock. I'm so out of it when it comes to Playstation stuff after the PS2, when I stopped paying attention. ? That said, for the MiSTer I've been going through various USB pad options including the TG16 Mini & Genesis Mini ones, but recently bought and settled on a PS5 controller and feel it's the one to use simply because of the array of buttons on it. e.g. I can use the Mister Menu via the 2 buttons in the middle. Anyway.. I have it wired with a USB-C cable. I'm sure it's possible to use it wirelessly, but haven't quite gotten the motivation yet to figure out how.
-
I promised I'd at least post what I did.. then I got the flu, and also couldn't find my MiSTer Anyway, not saying this will work for you, but this is what worked for me using the Analog I/O board (not digital) and a Monoprice VGA to RCA Component video cable to my CRT. Default .ini on the left, and the changes I made on the right. Also, don't forget to experiment with the sync-on-green physical switch on the MiSTer.
-
Yeah man.. I can give you my mister.ini as soon as I can locate my mister! I misplaced it very recently.. it's probably in the garage where my tv is still at so I'll locate it tomorrow and paste it here. That said, I used this as my starting point, he mostly focuses on PVM but mentions settings to use for component out as well: I couldn't change my settings via the GUI (no monitor), so I'd just take out the SD card and modify it with notepad on a laptop. I had to experiment a little since no one gave me a setting that showed a clear picture to my particular TV set. Aside from the standard stuff, I believe the final key for me was setting "Forced_scandoubler" to 1 and that finally gave me a clear picture in addition to the suggested settings. But again, I'll upload my mister.ini here when I can get it.

On that note I'm still waiting for that Numbskull Space Invaders. The last preview video I saw of it, it looked really nice. Will it ever come out?? ? ☹️

Sad that prices have gone up the past couple years as I wanted to get another one as a gift for my brother.. but at that price plus $65 SDRAM and you're already at $275 without anything else vs. the $180 I spent only a couple years ago for the same stuff. And that's not even counting anything else like an i/o board, cables, etc. But yes, it's just how it is at the moment. On what did you buy.. I got my kid a "Sound Voltex" controller as he was begging for one. And while I didn't technically buy these recently at all (I bought them decades ago new), my mom is visiting next month so I'm having her target a few of my more desirable Genesis games to bring with her on the plane so I can finally have them here.

Why nintendo NEVER ported all their arcade games to the nes?
NE146 replied to johannesmutlu's topic in NES High Score Club
Yes.. I'm sure it's because the games were old. By the time the NES came out in the US, I remember buying NES Galaga around 1988-ish, not because I was a huge fan of the game, but because I had nostalgia for it! If Galaga was old, imagine how much moreso thought was Radarscope, Sheriff, etc. They were friggin ancient. There wasn't a huge demand for those games when Super Mario Bros, or Contra, etc. and the NES in general brought on a whole new video game paradigm with bosses, and endings etc. It was a new age. ? On that note I also bought Donkey Kong out of nostalgia and was quite dumbfounded at the time why it wasn't arcade perfect. But it wasn't that big a deal anyway because again, DK was old. ? -
I initially ragged on PS3 again here.. but then I started watching vids of it on youtube and lol all of a sudden I want to try it again.
-
Ooh not sure why I never noticed this topic before. I'll bite. This is an older video of me going once through G&W Donkey Kong Jr. I mean as far as I can remember i.e. the 80's and 90's, the standard arcade game in japan was always a 100 yen coin. I guess it should be due a little adjustment by this point. ?

PC engine/Turbo Grafx gaming start.
NE146 replied to guitarmas's topic in Classic Console Discussion
You do go back though. i.e. the game stops, and you start again somewhere back. HOWEVER there is a gameplay feature to avoid that. Every now and then a cycling I/II/III/IV powerup comes along that stops and stays still if you shoot it. DON'T COLLECT THOSE. If you keep on shooting it (preferably near the bottom of the screen) it will eventually turn into a glowing orb that starts to fly away. I think it also does that if it reaches the bottom of the screen.. I don't remember exactly.. . But, when you collect that glowing orb, it adds 1 "continue" where the game doesn't stop if you die. i.e Your next ship just comes in and you keep going. So if you accumulate enough of continues from the beginning of the game you can barge your way through a lot of the difficult stages even if you keep dying.
