  1. I actually ran across a title that does not work properly.  It is Fidget on disk 41.  The poor little guys feet are missing.. it's a little hard to play when you can't see them.  I just grabbed the version from Fandal's site and it works just fine.  :D

  2. I've been going through homebrew for the Atari 8-bit and hand picking out games that I like.  I'm looking at this one.. and I want to like it.. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to finish the first level.  At least in Magnetit 2000 I can get past the first level.  But this first level for the original Magnetit has me baffled.  At best I can get two letters extracted before all my possible paths are blocked.  :|

    Help!

Yeah, this should be fixed now as of the update I applied several days ago.  I haven't even had a chance to try it out yet, but I'm very glad to hear that attachment filenames aren't being modified.  What a huge pain in the ass that was.

     ..Al

Yeah I downloaded recently a few attachments with more complicated names and thankfully they turned out ok!

  4. Thanks guys.. I figured the two most likely culprits were either custom read/write code or lack of interest in a particular game.

I didn't think about the limitations of rewriting to flash carts too much.

I'm mostly interested in these multidisk 2 cart images for emulation anyways.  Just to save the hassle of disk swaps.  I did forget to mention Gauntlet Deeper Dungeons.  Which I know was converted.. but the guy created a Multi Game cart for that one.  So it's not standalone.

  5. I was wondering if any of the following games ever got converted to a single disk images or to the MaxFlash cart..?

    221B Baker Street
    Blade Of Blackpoole
    Bop'n Wrestle
    Field Of Fire
    Golf Championship
    Jinxter
    Jupiter Mission
    Lode Runners Rescue
    Mail Order Monsters
    Millionaire
    Mindshadow
    Pawn, The
    Phantasie
    Phantasie II
    Racing Destruction Set
    Seven Cities Of Gold
Star Fleet I - The War Begins
    Universe
    Wargame Construction Set

    Thank you

    Hi guys.

PMC 40th always only used TIA or Yamaha;  I do a type of auto-detect which crashes on some emulators (notably Pro-System and it's off-shoots).  So only (as far as I know) only DragonFly and A7800 can use the Yamaha sound.  I don't think that standard MAME/MESS can (yet).  I could be wrong about that though.

    I hope this helps!

    Bob

Yeah I'm guessing it is not working on standard MAME/MESS cause the Hardware info shows the YM being there.  I'll probably setup a7800 on my laptop and see what happens when I run it there.  Unfortunately they forked into their own version.  But no biggy.  It's just one game and the TIA sound is quite good anyways.

The game doesn't need to detect POKEY - it's using the YM2151 chip which was planned to be in the XM (and can be installed in a Dragonfly Cart), not POKEY. Not sure any current 7800 emulators other than A7800 support YM sound but you already said you're not using it.

Whoops... I meant to say it's not detecting the YM sound.. :P

What's on your game title screen? It should say if it detects and uses the Yamaha sound chip.

    Not detected (TIA sound):

    Detected (YM2151 sound):

The top screenshot.  However Pacman Plus stated in the thread that the game won't be capable of detecting pokey when run in emulators.  So no biggy.  I was just curious to see how the Yamaha sound in the game was.

Pac 40th only has TIA and YM sound and you will know if the YM is being seen and detected because the game's title screen will say XM enhanced or Yamaha. Something to that effect. If you don't see anything like that on the title screen, then you are actually listening to the TIA audio.

Screenie here says XM is loaded ( mentions YM sound as well ).  Yet know indication from the main screen that it has been detected.  Please note this is the official mame build ( retroarch ) and not a7800 which is not under retroarch.  ( I've been using CMD files to activate things like the XM and high score cart ).

Hmmm Pacman Plus does mention emulators not detecting the Yamaha.. so maybe that is what it is.  :(

  10. ok.  I got the two XM titles working.  Got sound in Donkey Kong XM which originally I was not getting sound.  To me the Pac-man 40th anniversary pokey does not sound any different than the XM Yamaha sound?  Maybe I'm missing something.  I had to revert to the 2nd to last release of Pac-man 40th anniversary.  The final release would just sit at a blank screen.  The Pac-man 40th anniversary small mazes doesn't work for me at all.

No biggy I guess since I honestly don't hear any difference between the two.

I've just been doing some experimenting with Retroarch MAME and in order to do this kind of stuff I have to create a ".cmd" file for each game that I want to run in a special manner.  But these experiments will also lead me to be doing other things with other PC or console based emulators in MAME with some work.  :D

  11. I've been getting into setting up a7800 to use the XM and Hi-score cart emulation.

Which homebrew currently takes advantage of the XM specific features?

The only two I know of off the top of my head is the Pac-man Collection 40th Anniversary and the Donkey Kong XM.  Are there any other titles?

Just going to add here, I think 'Fishing Derby' is working now.  Hell, I don't know.  Maybe the stars will get aligned right, and someone will test it out and tell me.

    It's my best try, anyway:

    Fishing Derby [5200].a52 16.02 kB · 75 downloads

Thanks for all these nice 2600 conversions.. Just one slight, subtle thing that is important to gameplay strategy in Fishing Derby.  The speed for pulling the fish in is supposed to be slower and it speeds up when you press down the A button.  Plus the fish tend to resist a little more on the original than they do on your version.  Otherwise, good work!

Nice - when did you get online.  1987 for me, 300bps, 1200XL

Probably 1983.. I believe my first modem was the Atari POS 1030..  I remember I could type faster than the thing could send text.

I eventually updated to a Hayes compatible 1200 and the eventually 2400 modem.  I was a CO SYSOP of various BBS back in the day.  My neighbor had a fairly popular one at the time running on an Atari 130xe.  He owned a MIO so he had it running on some decent sized hard drives .  Another friend of mine who moved to another neighborhood also ran a BBS.  His ran off of a 1050 drive and a dual sided floppy drive.. I forget the name of the drive.

I got involved with fidonet stuff around 1987ish.  A guy online helped me setup my PC so that I could dial in and download the fidonet threads I was interested in and it ran all of that software mentioned in the documentary ( including PKXARC ) to decompress all of the message threads so that I could read and reply to them without having to connect to his BBS.  I definitely remember having to dial at certain times of the day to reduce phone call costs.  I eventually setup a BBS on my PC running off of a 30 meg hard drive.  It only lasted 3 months before I accidently killed the hard drive.   Oh I was so naive back then in handling my hardware.

No - not the BBC.  This is an 8-part documentary titled "BBS - The Documentary".  It's a really good watch, 8 episodes each an hour long.

Doi.. Don't know why my eyes saw the words BBC..  I'm gonna watch it but yeah.. a lot of that tied back into fido-net.. Which I was partially involved in back in the day.

I don't follow these kind of things as much as I used to .. but I think a similar situation may have been and / or is occurring with GIF / JPG / PNG.

  15. Well way back in the day in the PC world.  Arc was the king.  But then the owners of the Arc protocol wanted to charge license rights so everyone switched to Zip.  That is the way I remember it.  7zip came along much later.  I'm not convinced that 7zip is better than a RAR solid archive ( which is pretty much what 7zip is ).  But then I'm too lazy to do tests.  My biggest beef with WinRAR is it always seems they change something that forces you to have to update it to be able to decompress more recent archives.  7zip is ok.. but it's interface leaves a lot to desire in functionality.

That being said.. I can decompress zip, 7zip, RAR and various other archive types no problems with WinRAR.  Both are integrated into my file explorer right click menu so I can use either one.  Personally I don't like Winzip.. but each to their own.  Either way I'm not fussed to much about it.. :P

  16. I don't know if you have any plans to work on the Deflection ( Dark ) theme or not.. but at the top right of the screen I have this.. and it won't go away.  That junk about "Find results that contain".  Otherwise it seems to be ok?  I probably won't notice anything until I start using the forum more.

BTW welcome to the flipside.  I guess I'll have to wait for the search indexes to rebuild.  :P  I've been revisiting some of the homebrew images like I occasionally do to make sure I have the latest.

  17. Well I myself tend to be pessimistic...  but that being said I honestly hope things go well.  So far this board has survived the transitions despite the odds.

Just make sure the forum is double vacinnated maked and double boosted before the transition!

Sheesh... some people are so rude..   How dare they speak to their elders like that!
