Well I lucked out and the guy that works on this "Spannernick" was able to fix the issues I had with the menu and then promptly fixed a few more that I picked up. So for now I'm in full business! I created a custom controller config for my Firestorm Dual Analog 2. I'm currently tinkering with Vic-20 games. Even added 5 by myself. At some point I want to try out the mode packs and see how that goes. But for now I'm enjoying C64 and Vic-20 goodness.

I'm finally getting the hang of 1.9.2b9... it took me a while to figure out how to switch lists but I finally did. I'm currently tinkering around with setting up custom controls for games... etc.

I just discovered this over the weekend a whole year after you posted. Although the latest version ( 2.0.0b7) doesn't work on my mini for some reason. I was able to use 1.9.2b9 but it's kind of limited.. I can't switch lists and other stuff. I posted in the forums over there so hopefully someone can help me figure out how to get 2.0.0b7 to work.

You might be able to re-assign the key using the normal mame interface ( download regular mame ) and then use the resulting .cnf file or whatever it is called with A7800. Plus it might save the trouble of irritating a bunch of people who may not mind having 'p' as pause.

Truth be told. I always liked the music to the 5200 version of Pengo. I'm gonna have to give that one a spin. It's been a while.

I was just playing the game gear version of Pengo and I noticed the music was different... Interested in adding it?
I'm guessing no... but I just found that interesting.. considering Sega owns and released the game gear version of Pengo.

Thank you - I actually like the shot sound better now too. ZB made me get off my a$$ and change it.
The playfield horizontal limits are the same as the arcade. This goes for the flock as well as the player. The only thing I didn't limit horizontally is the attacking aliens, as I though it would look kind of weird with them suddenly disappearing if they fly too far left or right
Bob
Thanks for clearing that up. It will take some getting used to. But I understand your reasoning. Would it be asking too much to put a square / line on the bottom right left borders to make it obvious the limit for the player is there? I always get confused when my ship stops moving. I understand if you don't want to put that in. Just a suggestion on my part.
Thanks

Personally I think you should replace all of the sounds with the ones from the 5200 version of Galaxian!
On a more serious note. The new shot sound is a lot better. I also notice the ship limits are not on the far left and right of the screen. Was the original arcade like this as well?

Homesoft fixes are really cool. It'd be even cooler if someone documented what was done with some of the conversions like the Lode Runner one above. That way we know the advantages of using that version.

I feel like such a dope. Retroarch Mame Current has an option to disable softlists and to "force" the media type. So when I disable softlists and force media type to cart it automatically loads the ROM as CART1. So at the very least that solves my problem of not being able to load .a78 file. And the best part? Games that use RAM don't crash! So that is one other problem solved. That just leaves the XM games which is gonna be tricky. But I'll burn that bridge down later.
So I effectively have about 24 hours invested in A7800.XML editing for BIN images totally wasted.
Ah well no complaints here... Things should move along faster and I can finally enjoy the newer homebrews without having the headache of dealing with older emulators or the A7800.XML file. ?

Somebody needs to apply this patch / hack to the Scramble with the fixed scrolling ( on the sides).

If it helps, from a CL perspective, the difference between loading without and with the XM under MAME..
Without XM:
mame a7800 -cart "C:\PATH\TO\ROMS\ROM FILE.a78"
or
mame a7800 -cart1 "C:\PATH\TO\ROMS\ROM FILE.a78"
With XM:
mame a7800 -cart1 xm -cart2 "C:\PATH\TO\ROMS\ROM FILE.a78"
Thanks... I saw that info on the a7800 wiki page. Now only if I could translate that in XML code. Maybe I'll take a chance and bug the MAME devs as cranky as they can be..

Well I've gotten pretty good at adding titles to the A7800.XML file so they will load on the retroarch mame "current" version. I'm currently working my way through a bunch of homebrew titles. If only I could figure out a way to have a game "autoload" the XM in cart slot 1 and the game in cart slot 2 for those handful of games that need the XM.
I did figure out an awkward way of loading the XM and then a XM game can be selected from the software list. More experimentation definitely needed!

Wow. Just wow. You have created too of my favorite games I used to play on my Atari 800XL back in the day. I would spend hours playing them.
Both Pengo and Popeye! Masterful job!

In a78_slot.cpp, the a78_cart_slot_device::call_load member function validates the header bits and sets hardware, so no, there shouldn't be incompatible options being set.
I'm not really a MAME slot guru, but if you check out a7800.cpp, it uses "m_cart->get_cart_type()" to test which hardware is in the slot.
ok. Well thanks for helping. I determined that I can look at "slot devices" and it will tell me the type of mapper using when I load an .a78 file. So I can now plug that into the XML file without having to guess. The only downside is any value that uses SRAM seems to crash retroarch even though the game loads fine through the MAME load cartridge menu. So that is a bit of a downer. But at least I have a starting point.
I'll probably have to report the SRAM bug on the retrorch issues section.

Yep. a78 header parsing has been in there well before the MESS->MAME update, let alone the a7800 fork. I've been using stand-alone a78 files exclusively for a very long time, since it suits my CLI dev style.
I did some testing ( I do it on my Laptop to reduce head aches to a minimum ) and I have discovered that with retroarch mame current I can hit tab and manually load an .a78 file through the menu system. Unfortunately I cannot do that on my xbox one without it locking up.
I do have a question though when MAME loads an a.78 file is it possible for it to select options incompatible with the ones listedin a78_carts.h? Is there a way I can tell which cart "slot" or setting MAME is using when it loads an .a78 file?
Thanks

ok. I've been getting off my lazy butt to try out some recent Atari 7800 homebrew which does not run too well under older emulators *cough*emu7800*cough*cough*.
Anywho... I've noticed that a7800 will let me select an .a78 file and it will load it just hunky dory. Which leaves me the impression it reads the header information. Does the main MAME fork which I know you guys split from support .a78 files?
I'm just curious. I've been trying the ridiculous task of editing the mame a7800.xml file so it will load some of these said games and it is a bit of a pain in the neck to say the least. The only game I've had luck with so far is the Popeye Demo.
Thank you

I can't help you much with MAME, but if you are looking for emulation options, I'd suggest giving A7800 a look, which is a MAME branch or BUPSystem. Those are probably more up to date.
Argon is also pretty good as is JS7800 on most things. Just avoid ProSystem
Thanks.. but the dilemma I am in is that I want to run this on something that I have a controller for and that connects off of my TV ( like my Xbox One ).
Unfortunately as you stated the ProSystem emulator which used to be the cream of the crop is now no longer such. Retroarch is the only other emulator commonly supported on the systems I use ( hooked up to the TV ) which unfortunately means dealing with the main MAME branch and whatever deficiencies it may have.

I'm finally getting off my lazy butt and trying to get the latest 7800 homebrew as well as older 7800 homebrew games running on the latest version of retroarch MAME... also known as ( MAME Current )
. Anywho the version I'm currently tinkering with is 0.237. Which of course means editing the friggin a7800.xml file.
I've managed to get this game to run and with music but poor old bentley is invisible and when I move him where his character should be is a rotating range of garbled characters. I'm just trying to figure out if I have my ROM slot settings incorrect or if it is an issue with MAME itself.
Any bites on this?

I'm beginning to think that in terms of projects Nintendo thinks too small. They had the same issue with Mario Kart 8. Which under delivered for the Wii-U especially with battle mode.
They did make up for it with deluxe. Maybe Animal Crossing got too big and popular for it's own britches.
Over the years it was always a relatively small game file size wise. But yet pretty complex and full of content. I'm thinking maybe the team was too small or they budgeted to small for it.
Basically I'm saying that I dont think Nintendo is used to handling large scale projects. I've seen it happen with other 1st party titles.

Posting this before reading the whole thread.. But this is really sad news..
With the passing of some greats in the Atari community the last couple years. I really enjoyed all the hack threads where he was involved or managed to "tweak" or improve some game, fix bugs and all sorts of cool Atari 2600 goodness. I believe he even did a few things for the Atari 8-bit series as well. Sad news indeed.
