  8. Classic Video Games Make a Comeback Wed Jun 23, 8:58 AM ET Add Technology - AP to My Yahoo! By MICHAEL FELBERBAUM, Associated Press Writer RALEIGH, N.C. - When Rob O'Hara needs a serious video game fix, he unwinds a black rubber joystick and plays a few rounds of "Space Invaders" on his Atari 2600, vintage 1982. The 30-year-old networking engineer owns newer Xbox (news - web sites), PlayStation 2 (news - web sites) and GameCube consoles, but for a true gaming geek like O'Hara, nothing tops the blocky graphics and simple sound effects of retro video games. "Playing games was a big part of my childhood," says the Yukon, Okla. man. "Back then, it seems like games were more family-oriented, and as a result, families ended up playing a lot of games together." O'Hara is no relic in his love of 1980s electronic nostalgia. Vintage consoles are plentiful on Internet auction sites. An annual "Classic Gaming Expo" convention is growing, moving to larger quarters this year. And companies are trying to cash in with repackaged editions of classics including the space fighter "Defender" and the pill-munching "Pac-Man." Nintendo (news - web sites) Co. recently released eight classic games for its portable Game Boy Advance, including "Super Mario Bros.," "The Legend of Zelda," and "Excitebike." Along with the $20-apiece games, the company also released a $100 Game Boy Advance system styled after its original Nintendo Entertainment System. Jakks Pacific, meanwhile, sells a line of retro video game systems from classic game companies like Atari, Namco, Capcom and Activision. The $20 battery-powered systems, first released two years ago, plug directly into televisions and resemble old-fashioned joysticks. "Games like Pac-Man are still as compelling today as they were 30 years ago," said spokeswoman Genna Goldberg of the Malibu, Calif.-based company. "There is a big nostalgia value." Retro video gaming has become something of a pop culture phenomenon lately, with video game music and themes featured in television commercials for Hummer and Saturn sport utility vehicles. A top 20 R&B hit, "Game Over (Flip)" by Lil' Flip features sound effects from "Pac-Man." It's not just nostalgia that's fueling retro video interest, says O'Hara. He thinks the old games were simply more fun to play: "There's a phrase that's used a lot in marketing — 'easy to learn, hard to master' — that describes most classic video games." Gamers itching to relive their Atari, Colecovision and Intellivision days can find plenty of systems for about $20 on Internet auction sites like eBay. Many video game stores sell refurbished models for a bit more, about $80. You can even travel to game as a group. Last year's Classic Gaming Expo drew over 1,400 attendees, and this year the August event is moving from Las Vegas to the convention center in San Jose, Calif., to accommodate larger crowds. Expo spokesman Jayson Hill says there's a whole generation of older gamers who trashed their systems when they were kids. Now, they're feeling nostalgic and have some money to spend. "There was a time when you could walk into any thrift store and pick up a game cartridge for 50 cents and systems for a couple of dollars," Hill said. "Those days are gone." Many who go back and play the older games are often surprised, however, at the crudeness of the graphics, said Steven L. Kent, author of "The Ultimate History of Video Games." The 1982 game "River Raid" is a good example, he said. Players fly a fighter jet over a river filled with ships and barges but "when you go back, you see that the river was a blue rectangle with lots of gray rectangles for boats." "A lot of people look back on old games like a kind of Camelot. Only when you do, you see that the castle smelled, the food was rancid and the maidens were bloated." ___ On the Net: http://www.jakkstvgames.com http://www.nintendo.com http://www.cgexpo.com
  9. I'm really liking MVP Baseball 2004 by EA Sports on the 'Box. Great game...however the difficulty levels vary too much.... I started a franchise on PRO difficulty level....but its getting too easy I haven't lost a game in awhile;) So I crank it to the next difficulty and now its too hard....there is no in-between.......I guess I have to practice more.... 11. MVP Baseball (Xbox): great game...playing dynasty mode with my Yanks...started on Pro difficulty level...but it was too easy....I won like 32 in a row....I just now cranked it to Allstar...and I won my first game on this difficulty level...but you really have to be on your game in the higher difficulties....no more blow outs and you need patience to hit... Carve (Xbox): fun little game....I loved jet-ski games...loved waverace on the n-64 and also WR Bluestorm sequel on the Gamecube.....Its not quite as polishied as the above two titles but still fun for only $12.99!!! Spryo (gamecube)/Colin McCrae 04 (xbox): ...just been dabbling in these two games....MVP has really consumed most of my time...I cant wait to fully get into CR04.....Spryo was also a $12.99 pickup...not bad for the money...I like three-D platformers.....

  13. Still waiting for Adrians comparison between RSC II vs CMR 04..... thanks dude! Ah, wait no longer! OK, first things first, Rallisport 2 is not as technical a rally racer as Colin McRae. I alluded to that point with my earlier posts, but after spending some time with it the obvious fact is that the control is most certainly more simplified (largely on par with the first Rallisport). You may either love or hate it, but I prefer Colin McRae's physics engine better. Cars seem to pivot and auto-center out of slides. Make no mistake, the physics engine IS solid and will likely appeal to those who loved the first Rallisport, but do keep this in mind. I'm pleased to say that the insane difficulty ramp-up in the first Rallisport has been smoothed out a bit. Recall that the original started out deceptively easy in career mode, only to suddenly ramp up to near-impossible levels midway through the career mode. Rallisport 2 seems to have a smoother level of progression. Yes, you will likely have to practice a bit and learn the tracks (like in any good rally racing title), but you won't need to have near-perfect runs just to finish and progress. The audio tracks are pretty forgettable, but that's a minor point to me as you need to focus on driving. The graphics engine is in a word, unbelieveable! Trees are ultra detailed, bump mapping is used heavily, lighting is fantastic (check out the night driving sequences!) and the frame rate stays high. This is without a doubt, built for the XBOX and not some watered-down multi-system port! Truly stunning and at times, damn near photorealistic. My ratings would be as follows: Graphics: 10 out of 10 Driving Physicis/Control: 8 out of 10 (still solid, but I wish there was an option to turn off the CPU assist a bit) Sound: 6 out of 10 (engine sounds are nice, but audio tracks blow) Realism: 9 out of 10 (graphically, racing games don't get any nicer than this) Overall: 9 out of 10 (worthy of the $49.99 asking price, but I would still suggest that people try out Colin McRae 04 as well to see the differences in the physics engine themselves..it's hard to explain) Cool...thanks Adrian... But the most important question.....the overall winnner is?? I hated the handling in RS 1, so I guess the handling on RS 2 is quite similar......I may have to rent it....I actually gave up on RS 1 midway thru the career mode. Too frustrating... Thanks A

  22. Hi, Just got this great game and was wondering how everyone else handles / takes corners in this game? In my favorite Rally game of all time, Sega Rally on the Saturn, I used to use a manual tranny and downshift one or two gears depending on the degree of curve..... But with Colin 04, some of these cars have 5 and 6 speeds and I haven't tried my technique.....For now I have been either hitting the regular BRAKE for easy turns and using the HAND BRAKE for sharper, hairpin curves... What are your driving techniques in CM Rally 04? How do you take your corners.... 1) manual tranny and downshift? or 2) auto with braking? Thanks...and BTW great game!!!!!!!!! Ant
