  1. From here on I will only be sending out the PDF version of these game manuals in this torrent. If you want it in other formats, please refer to Farb's excellent internet.org site. He is the main authority on this initiative and his site contains the same manuals in many different formats. Since the PDF format has become so common, most people will be able to view this format. It will reduce the size of the torrent and increase the download speed.

The current torrent contains all of the formats contained on Farb's site, but future updates will only contain the PDF files.

  2. Its gonna take a bit to pull it together. I will be including all the different formats within the torrent, but I will make it so ppl can just download the format they want without downloading all of it. The site is fairly slow as well, but I should have something going by tomorrow.

Well then, here is the first torrent. The option for PDF with TEXT didnt work on a few of the files, so they arent included. The rest of the formats are there. You should be able to pick and choose which files you want out of the torrent. I will add new stuff as it is posted to Farb's internet.org site.

    Have at it!

P.S. Had to RAR the torrent to get it to upload.

  3.

I was referring to actually creating/maintaining a torrent. I just want to personally maintain one distribution channel and I think Internet Archive may be it. It would be nice if someone else would pick up maintaining a torrent from there.

OK, I think I could do that. I will grab the stuff thats up there now and build a torrent and start seeding it. Where should I post the torrent for others to grab?

  4. Yes, most clients let you choose which parts of a torrent you want. But if new files need to be added, it is a new torrent file, and does not fit in with the previous torrent.

Actually, if you point the new torrent toward the old directory and do a "force recheck" it will check all the old data that is still present in the new torrent and won't redownload it (as long as the MD5 checksum matches). And yes, Farb, if you need somebody to seed a PDF torrent, I could put it up on my seedbox alongside the other. My seedbox is up 24/7, except for the odd reboot (damn you Windows update!)

  5. OK, before this thread spirals outta control. I was NOT trying to insult Farb's efforts in any way. My earlier post may have seemed like I was. I have been through many many project management cycles before (it's kinda what I do for a living). All I was attempting to say was that as soon as someone takes responsibility for a project, then they have a responsibility for the cycle of that project. Some thought needs to go into the distribution of the product that is being produced. At least some of the effort could be given by people willing to help, to avoid overloading any single person. Perhaps a website that offered the files as incremental updates, to avoid the necessity of downloading the complete package over and over to keep up-to-date. This is the idea I was attempting (badly) to put forth earlier. This can and should be more than a 1-person effort. My stating that "I wont bother you again" was supposed to mean, that instead of incessantly posting begging for updates, I would shut up till he had something to offer. Like any public forum I forgot to take into account that other people would see what I wrote in the worst possible light. I formally apologize to anyone who thought I was being an a$$, I should have shutup earlier.

  6. I offered to help you out with it a while ago. Sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the trees. This is after all, a "software preservation initiative", and seems that getting the software into the hands of the public should be one of the goals. I have been providing space on my torrent box for these files since the beginning, I know that probably doesnt seem to mean much but I wanted to contribute. So, the "initiative" gets bogged down in administration. I can understand. I wont bother you again.

  7. Some more info (just to make sure I'm not making a stupid mistake):

    Exact error message (during bootup):

    Config error (152) DEVICE RAMDISK.SYS

    My Config.sys file:

    USE BANKED

    DEVICE SPARTA

    DEVICE SIO /A

    DEVICE ATARIDOS

    DEVICE ULTIME

    DEVICE JIFFY

    DEVICE FATFS.SYS

    DEVICE RAMDISK.SYS

    My AUTOEXEC.BAT:

    PATH CAR:,D1:>DOS,D1:>TOOLS

    PROMPT $L$P>

My RAMDISK.SYS is running off the file in CAR: it is 1405 bytes and dated 10-02-15.

If I rename CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to *.BAK, I still get the config error during bootup.

So, what am I screwing up?

  8. I updated all my A8's with SDX 4.47 a while ago. I noticed then that I would get an error during boot that Ramdisk.sys was improperly configured, so I removed it from my Config.sys. Stopped the error message. Yesterday, I was moving some stuff around trying to organize my CF card and could really use a ramdisk as a temp landing spot for some of the files. Well, I wasnt able to get it going. I have a U1MB installed, but D0: doesnt get setup during startup. I tried re-adding Ramdisk.sys, but just get that stupid config error and it doesnt work. What do I have to do to get this working again? Is there updated files that I need to get? Are there new settings I need to apply? I'm at a loss.

  9. I dunno if this would be easy to implement or not.. but maybe a key to boot into the sideloader directly with the PBI enabled (instead of holding HELP then "L') . It's not a bad thing the way it is now, you get a chance to make sure the BIOS is set the way you want it before you go into the sideloader, but once you have the BIOS setup, it seems kinda redundant to have to go through that screen every reset. BTW, FJC just lovin the new BIOS.. always thought the old one looked like beta software. Still digging thru stuff to find my ST mouse so I can give your GUI a try. You do awesome work and looking forward to future releases.

  10. Wico command control. I prefer the one with the round knob on top. Have never found a better one for the Atari. The old CX-40 used to cause muscle strain in my hands, couldnt even hold a beer after a few hours playtime. My old Wico has stood up to over 20 years of use, and aside from a cleanup every few years it still marches on.

  11. Well, DrVenkman.. W7-W8-W9 removed W11 jumpered (as per Install instructions). Also soldered right to the CPU pins (thats where my shaky hands caused a problem). This is actually my 4th Ultimate install. I ran into some RL events that forced me to sell off my other computers.. all I have left at the moment is my 1200xl, which is why it drove me nutz when it didnt work right. I look forward to many many hours of A8 awesomeness now. I just gotta open it back up and mount the board itself properly (temporarily I fit it inside a cigarette hard-pack which is just kinda loose in the case). I really need to get it bolted down, but all the dis and re-assembly of the computer was annoying me. So, once it started working right I wanted to enjoy it for a while. Also, I did shave down the cartridge "tunnel" so that it wasnt such a pain to insert remove carts. You cant tell from the outside, but I got tired of wrestling with my Side2. Now it is a bit harder to "feel" where the cart plugs in, but you dont have to use a hammer to get it in :P Altogether a worthwhile investment of my time :D

  12. OK, time to put this issue to bed. I reflashed the U1MB bios and PBI to the newest and all problems disappeared. My computer boots and runs just the way it is supposed to now. Going to have to deal with that mounting issue sometime.. but for now just enjoying all the A8 goodness the U1MB brings :) Thanks for any and all that tried to help during this thread (especially FJC). It was my damn shaky soldering hands, and needing to update the firmware.. it is all now and truly sorted. The U1MB is by far the best upgrade to my A8 that it has been my pleasure to own.. and best of all I DIDNT KILL MY 1200XL!!!

BTW - Included with my U1MB Lotharek supplied a screw, a nylon standoff and 2 nuts for mounting.. I guess he does read this forum.

  13. Well, I did as suggested (thanks Jon) and rechecked the 4 wires I actually had to solder during the installation and found a bridge. Cleaned that up and it straightened up the screen corruption issue. I can change the U1MB options and boot the computer. However, I now have another strange thing happening... If I just turn the Atari on (no keys pressed) it boots into the XEGS game in XEGS slot 1. If I hold option, it will boot SDX from the U1MB. I have Basic C flashed into Basic Slot 1, but it wont boot from there no matter what options I select in the Ult config menu. I did not change any jumpers etc on the U1MB board itself, so I dont know why I'm getting XEGS mode. But at least it is working now (if still not working right). Progress is progress.

  14. Well, finally decided to upgrade my backup 1200xl to U1MB. Ordered from Lotharek (less than 2 weeks and it was here, he's definatley improved). Took my time installing (about 2 hours, checked and re-checked every wire and solder joint). However when it came time to turn it on... what I get is in the attached screenshot. No keypresses seem to have any affect (except Reset, which just brings back the same screen). Power cycling just brings the same. Did I screw up the install? Did I get a bad U1MB? Any quick fixes to get this thing going? I'm heart-sick that I may have destroyed my other 1200xl.post-34384-0-88647500-1439659009_thumb.jpg

  15. I'll have another update in a couple of weeks. I don't have the ability to torrent at the moment :-)

Awesome! Let me know, I will continue to seed the current one till you have the update ready. Thanks for all the hard work!

P.S. If you could put it up in dropbox or something similar, I could build the torrent and seed it for you.
