  1. Hello!

First of - my apologises to all of you still waiting for their boards

All I can really say is that i'm working 14h a Day and can't Access the forums from work

Good news: All boards are assembled, and i've manager to transport my atari 800 back to warsaw so i could test them. I was hoping to get this done before the christmass, so everyone could enjoy their long awauted board - unexpected chrismass gift so to say, but i seems it ship out just after New year, when i'll get back to work

Another ship date missed... and no other status update, and PM queue full so cant message him directly. I'm really glad everyone keeps telling me how good he is, as I am not feeling it.

  2. It would probably be a good idea for anybody with an Ultimate to keep a copy of this handy. It has saved me a number of times. Now I use FJC's in-place flasher exclusively, no more problems. I also bought a programmer, so I can rescue no matter how bad I tear it up. You can also use an Atarimax 8mbit cart to reflash your Ultimate. Best idea is to only use FJC's program though, he has it pretty well error-proofed and I have never had a bad flash with it.

  3. I doubt he is either. My whole point is that it has been a YEAR. When I sent him the money for the boards, he did state that it would probably be done "by summer". Well, summer will be rolling around again and still cant seem to get any updates on when to expect them. That is my whole point. I am getting kinda tired of everybody jumping in telling me how "straight-up" candle is. Like I am some kinda creep for questioning why it is taking so long. I am a veteran living on disability, and if I had known it would take so long to actually get what I was asked to pay up front for, I may have made a different decision. I know candle makes awesome products, I know he has a "real-life" as well. It's just that I feel that after this length of time without having what I paid for in my possession, I am at least due an update as to when I will have it. If that means I'm a jerk I can live with that.

  4. Well, here we go again.. it was my one year anniversary of sending my money to candle for this (actually 4 days ago). I still havent received it or any updates (since he said it was coming sometime in January in an earlier post). I am NOT dissing his work or awesomeness in creating this for the Atari community, but waiting for a full year AFTER sending him the money is not a really good business plan for anyone. I am aware that sometimes real-life situations DO come up, but then the money WAS sent. The main problem I am having with this whole deal is the lack of updates as to when this will be coming. The man is holding hundreds (maybe thousands, I dont know) of people's money and has been for over a year (in my case). So, why is it so difficult to get an update? I am not asking for offers to buy me out or trying to get out of the deal I made, but what IS the deal with it?.

  5. I have a CF2SD that works fine in a MyIDE II, but it is too fat to fit in the Side2. As far as the adapter goes, it works fine and havent had any probs with any SD card I have used in it. It seems both Side2 and MyIDE II are fairly picky about CF cards though. I have some Kingston 4GBs that work perfectly. Just bought a lot of 5 8GB CFs that are some kinda Chinese make. These seem to work ok, but will not boot the Atari. They hold info, but for some reason wont boot right. I guess you get what you pay for, quality wise.

  6. I was in the Army from 1979-1984, so I was over in Korea while the "big" home computer boom was going on. I do remember my boss (a Major) came to my unit and I became his personal clerk. The nice thing about that was he brought his Atari 800 with him and allowed me to hook it up on my desk and use it for work. Well, I couldnt believe I was getting paid to play with this awesome computer, and this is where I started learning to program. I had to. I wrote a lot of presentation graphics programs and even started a unit newsletter. It was pure awesomeness. When my Major took his mid-tour leave, he brought back an 800XL (he actually hand carried it on the plane, kept it in his lap cuz he didnt trust airline baggage handlers). That was it, I was hooked. My Commander had a clone Apple setup which I was allowed to mess with, but it could not possibly compare to the Atari. When I rotated back stateside, one of the first things I did was get myself an 800XL, and I think I have had an Atari in my life ever since. I like the ease of programming it, tried programming on the PC for a while, but with Windows and everything, the feeling of being in "control" of the machine just wasnt there. Programming the Atari in ML gave you control of the entire computer, and you could do everything the hardware was capable of. I just wish I had some of the newer tech toys that have come out for the ol' Atari8 back in the day. I will own Ataris until the day I die, I really have made them a part of my life and that will never change.

Absolutely awesome! It has been a REALLY long wait! I have 2 800s that have been crying all night waiting for these. Soon, I will be able to make em shut up :) I am a happy camper!

  8. I was in the Army back in '82 when I first got exposed to A8 and both of these text adventures. To me, it seemed that HHTTG was linear and predictable, but Zork almost demanded "thinking out of the box". I agree that HHTTG had some great moments, but if you had read the book, it was totally predictable. In Zork it was almost totally unpredictable what would be around the next corner. It's my belief that if you are going to invest days and maybe even weeks toward solving a computer game, there should be very small amounts of "trying things at random" just to get past a puzzle to proceed in the game. So that brings Zork forward as the most enjoyable playing experience. In fact, this post has me digging out my disks, shaking off the dust and trying to make it through them again.

  9. Well, first comes to mind are the adventure games Mindwheel, Essex, and Brimstone. These games REQUIRED 2 drives and would read both at the same time to play the game. The games just didnt get me going like Infocom's (I thought they were way to easy), but they definately set your drives to jumpin.

  10. True, it has been a year... one might at least know of some progress or news as to what has happened... hope all are healthy and well....

I hope they are in good health as well, just getting really frustrated. Personally, I would have sent only half the money with the rest on delivery if I had known it would be this long of a wait. And no status updates either.

  11. If you want, I will pay you out and take over the waiting for the boards, I'm happy to go on the wait list if you want to get off of it.

    Let me know :)

I never said I wanted off. I'm just saying that it has been a long wait with no updates. 10 months is a long time to wait, and I would just like to receive what I paid for so long ago. I'm not looking to give up, just trying to figure out when I might be getting it, thats all. Last time candle commented in here, he stated there might be more he is building that are not counted for. Message him and get yourself on the list.

  12. Well, here it is.. this thread has "fallen" off the main page about 4 times now, but revives every couple months. I tried to speak my mind in it earlier, but everyone tells me that I should just be patient. I consider myself an unusually patient person, but this is driving me nutz. I sent candle just a little under $200us back on January 10th of this year. Here it is about the end of September, and I still hear nothing. It would stand to reason if somebody is accepting money to fulfill a production run they would really try to at least keep the customer informed of their progress.. Alas, last entry by candle was almost a month and a half ago. I understand that real life does impact, but really? Not even time to take a minute or two to let the people who sent their hard-earned money a progress report? Everybody wants to chime in and tell me how to "give him time" or "he'll get around to it", but what about me. I sent the damn money ON THE DAY that I got his email that he was accepting funds. Coming up on 10 MONTHS later, it is like pulling teeth to get a status report. I do appreciate candle making this run, but it is not fair to leave paying customers hanging with no status reports.

  13. OK, this post started as an awesome announcement for a major update to the APT toolkit. Really nice work there FJC! But, since then it has deteriorated into the usual "pissing contest" that has infected other threads in this forum. Personally, I use FJC's implementation of APT and uflash myself, mainly because of its ease-of-use and continual development. I have used the other flashing options, but really, for my needs uflash is what I need. This is not to say that any of the other options are not valid or useable, but really.. do we need to start this same war EVERY time one of them are updated? It seems kinda unnecessary and childish. Nobody is FORCING anybody to use any particular program, use whatever works best for you. I appreciate the work and long hours that have gone into the developement of ALL of these tools, without which none of the "goodies" I have installed in my A8 would be worth very much. Let's just settle down and enjoy our old-ass computers and call a truce so we dont have to hear the same tired arguments over and over. I appreciate everybody's work and LOVE having an A8 with the features I have in it now, that should be pretty much the bottom line for everybody. I'ma go play with my new Atari goodies now... Peace out.

  14. I think most people wanting to flash the vintage cart want the cart passthrough of the original so they can stack it. Though if you need this, it's probably just as cheap and far less effort to just buy an IDEPlus. You get a cart port, SDX, a real-time clock and an IDE controller for the price of a vintage SDX cart and the tools to modify it and burn an EPROM. An Ultimate 1MB would give you SDX and a free cart slot too.

I already have 2 U1MBs, I wanted to mod this old cart for a couple reasons.. just the learning associated with it, and for the portability. I really want a SDX solution that I can move amongst my ever-growing collection of A8s. If I have to "build-it-into" the computer, it isnt what I am looking for. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I'm gonna keep researching into it, and somewhere there will be somebody that can tell me how to do it.

  15. no, what Im saying is that even if he did use a bigger eprom for future "upgradeability", how would you do it? Once its soldered in, its soldered in.. And the socket footprint on the board isn't big enough to use a socket.. if you double-socket it, it gets too tall and the cart shell wont fit back on, making it an absolute bitch to use in an XL..

So basically.. Just do the damn thing and if/when you wanna upgrade to a larger image, just undo/redo the mod..

Well, there are zero-clearance sockets available. I'm pretty sure with enough tinkering I could make it work physically, what I really wanted to know is the actual electronics hookups to get it to work. I have a "clip-on" attachment for my Eprom burner, so I can burn "in-situ". I dont want to keep tearing something apart and rebuilding it over & over, there has to be a better solution.

  16. Yeah, thats pretty much what I thought. Is there anything that would stop me from filling it the rest of the way up? Or even use a 256k eprom? Costwise, it seems that price of chip is the same as 128k. Will it need more address lines, as in more than the 128k mod provides? If so, are there enough lines on the piggyback chip to run it? This is all theoretical of course. Just seems if I am going to do the work modding the cart, I should build in a bit of obsolescence protection as well. It is easier to build bigger to start, than to tear it apart again in the future to upgrade again. Does any of this sound do-able?

  17. Well, I am definatly gonna tackle the upgraded SDX anyway. I'm going to try to go with a 128k flashable for the update, unless SDX is going to expand up to 256 or 512 I dont know what the possibility of that is, or could I just add programs to CAR: thru SDX Imager until I had a 256k image? That would be kinda awesome. But for starters I'm gonna build the 128k mod and go from there. I wont be able to fool with it until the end of August, when I will have a 3 week class break. Thanks for all the links so I can figure out what needs to be done.

  18. Thanks for the replies. The deal is, I am not really interested in the option with the switch. Why preserve the original software when it does not serve what I need the cart for? I am not a museum curator that feels the need to preserve everything the way it was.. rather I am a realist who wants to actually be able to use the stuff in my personal equipment and want it to work correctly. The modern, updated SpartaDOS X is what I need.. the cartridge passthru is what is awesome about having the actual cart. So, with this in mind I will pursue a method to upgrade the cart and flash in the newest SDX, and I will have a "portable" SDX solution. I have quite a few A8s, and the internal SDX mods (U1MB, Side2, etc) are great. Except for the Side2, there is no real way to move it from machine to machine easily. And with the Side2, there is no way to run another cart with it. So, I just want a cart I can plug into an unmodified Atari, plug another cart into it, and be off and running. I have no need to switch between the original version and a modern version. I just need to upgrade it and flash in the newest version and be done with it. The ability to re-flash as newer versions come out would be awesome as well. I guess I should have been a bit clearer in my original post. And, thanks again FJC and BillC with the great suggestions, but I will have to do a bit more research into getting this thing setup the way I want it.

Edit: Upon following the link provided by BillC, I believe I have found the mod instructions I need. Thanks!
