Atari 1200XL with U1MB - Side-II(2)-MyIDE][-Ape USB-SIO2SD-130XE(Stock)-800XL(U1MB) That's whats on my desk now.. Have 2 800s waiting for Incognitos.
-
Ok, found the proper files and got -RE flashed into U1MB. Got the .atr and setup the MyIDE-][.. seems to be working.. Lemme see if it's doing what I want it to. Thanks ProWizard!
Awesome!! 100% what I have been trying for! Now I have full Mac65 functions and a TON of diskspace to fill up with programming junk! Now, THIS is what I bought the MyIDE-][ for! I still have my Side-II's, but not everything runs under SDX. Now, I need to figure out how to get Action! running in my new environment. ProWizard I'm gonna name all my illegitimate children after you! You are DA MAN!

Well, OK.. Not so good.. The Rom file is 32k which is too big to flash to U1MB. So, wasnt able to get it going. Next?

Awesome! ProWizard you da man! Thanks for this and I will let you know if I get it going. Again, thanks!

Ok, sorry if I sounded a bit upset earlier. To answer your questions:
1) LOL. Yeah, I have flashed a lot of different OS's into my U1MB. Thanks to FJC's awesome uflash it isnt near the hassle it used to be.
2) I have the current R2 of MyBIOS flashed in there, but it isnt really helpful. When I switch to that OS I cannot use the START/SELECT/OPTION to enter the IDE setup, it just flashes the screen then locks up. Not useful at all.
I have tried a lot of different things to try and get this working. The best results come from turning off SDX and Side support in the U1MB, and booting the MyIDE-II, select MyBIOS, then space to continue boot. Where can I d/l the older MyBIOS which you say works better? That may be just what I need.
-
I'm surprised you have so much issues with MyIDE 2 and U1MB. I run it really perfect. Only difference is that I keep using the MyBIOS for MyIDE 1 instead of the MyBIOS for MyIDE 2. The so called -RE version of MyBIOS is way more stable, and lacks only a few tiny, not interesting, features, while it's operation is very compatible, and very good.
You can even run Mac/65 as a CART from the FAT32 from MyIDE ][ and boot from a hard disk partition of the same myIDE ][ interface. It's awesome!
This is the problem I have. Everytime I mention I am having probs getting the MyIDE-II working with my U1MB, I get people telling me it works awesome for them. That's really great and all, but if you found a solution, how's about sharing it? I havent found anybody telling me exactly how they have theirs configured or what they had to do to get it right. So, I just shoot in the dark trying to get mine to work the way I want it to. If you arent sharing the wisdom of how you got it working, what good is it to anybody to hear how great you think it is? How about a few lines about how to get Mac65 running from FAT32 while booting from HD? A little help in that direction would be awesome, as that is exactly what I havent been able to get going yet.
And Stefan, keep fighting the good fight. I wasnt trying to insult you. I was just trying to help. I hope you can get your gear running the way you want.

I own a couple U1MB's the MyIDE-II and a couple Side-II carts. I have personally never had any of my U1MB's do what yours is doing. I have "bricked" my U1MB, recovered it (with FJK's awesome help), and tried a ton of configuration tests to try to get MyIDE-II to work the way I want it to, No real luck there. If I turn most of the U1MB features off (or set them to stock), the MyIDE works fine, just not the way I want it to. With yours, the corrupted screens and problems reflashing - I 100% agree with FJC that something is not right with the install of your U1MB. I have a U1MB in a 1200XL and one in a 800XL. Neither do what yours does. My Side-II carts work awesomely with the U1MB, as long as I use SDX (either from the Side-II or the U1MB), but I have not been able to really get anything going with either a MyDOS or alternative DOS. I am trying to get away from SDX reliance as I want to run Mac65 and Action to get back into programming the A8, but neither of these programs run under SDX. I keep trying different configurations, but memory conflicts just wont let me get anywhere. I am still hoping somebody somewhere will recompile a version of Action of Mac65 that will work with SDX, but not holding my breath. My suggestion to you would be to let FJC figure out where your installation went bad, and you WILL be happy with these mods. The documentation of all these newer mods is sketchy and scattered all over the web. I think it would be a great project for somebody to put together a documentation set for U1MB, Side-II, MyIDE-II, the Atarimax Flash Carts, and any of the other newer mods that have come out recently. I have found that some of these things are awesome, but sometimes figuring out how to setup and use them is quite an adventure.

Firstly, congrats candle! I was not meaning to "grab somebody by the throat" when I posted to this thread. Was simply asking for update as to status of the project. And finally here it is. Thank you for that. I am not trying to get you to forgo future projects (quite the opposite really). It is nice to hear that you have revamped the production process for this batch. That kinda news is all I was really asking for all along. I never once said you were not going to fulfill orders, I was just trying to figure out "what's up" with the fairly long delay. Again, let me say I appreciate your making this production run and all the hard work you have put into it. Thank you.

I understand your concerns, and all I can do to offer a little relief is ASSURE you that CANDLE IS THE REAL DEAL. I've bought probably 2 of most of the things he's offered, and they all arrived, safe and sound. I know you'd like your stuff, but don't worry. You WILL get it.
I guess my question would be, when? As I stated earlier, I paid for these items 6 months ago. No status updates for several months. I'm not seeing anything that is normal business in this deal. If it was going to take this long for him to fulfill, why no status updates? That is my concern. If I didnt voice it, how long would I be waiting for no answer? 1 year, 2 years? When would be a really good time to start thinking that this isnt going to happen?

Actually I have bought a few things from Steve at Atarimax, a couple U1MBs and Side2s from Lotharek and bunches of stuff off eBay. Lotharek did take a while to get here, but he was upfront about the status of the order. Atarimax was easy as he is just one state over from me. I have never, ever ordered something that has taken this long, and I cant even get a word as to how much longer. I read here in this forum as to how he is having issues in his personal life, I get it. When I made this order with him, we made a commitment to each other. I sent him the money to pay for it upfront, and cant even get a status update here 5 months later. I really really wanted these boards, but I have never been treated this way. It isnt a matter of shipping, if it was I think he would have informed me that it was on its way. Instead I dont even know if he has built them yet. I guess that is my side of things, would candle PLEASE respond with a status update so I can get some relief?

Yeah - last we knew, he was living almost 1,000 miles from home, and working 15-18 hour days trying to keep food on the table for his wife and baby. He'll deliver,
I can understand that life sometimes catches us unprepared, I just cant understand why he doesnt at least give us updates as to progress. I never would have figured that it would be almost 6 months since I sent my money and no word at all. I am doing the best I can as well. I am a veteran living on disability, so I have to watch what I spend my money on. I am just trying to get some word as to when what I paid for is going to be shipped. I guess that makes me evil.

Well, the programming algorithms are pretty generic so it wasn't much extra work to make the program handle AtariMax carts. In that sense it's a "free" extra. The main reason for handling all these different carts was so that I could develop GUI ROMs without having to faff about with different flashers. Sic! was more difficult since it requires ROM switched in at $8000-$9FFF when flashing.
As I say: the unreleased version of UFlash itself isn't dependent on SDX any more, but circumstances sometimes dictate that it needs to be enabled anyway. If I have time over the next couple of weeks I'll upload a beta.
Like I said earlier.. you are DA MAN! I am looking forward to the beta when you get it ready. Thanks for your work!

well, if all of those who wanted this board would pay in the same time it would be shipped long time ago
but it's not the case
case is i'm still waiting for some, and i had to wait pretty long even before i could buy a thing to move this project closer to an end
as i wrote already - last wensday pcb boards were delivered, they were ordered in february with estimated delivery time on 11 week of the year, and it came a week after
all other components were delivered ealier, so i finallly can start assembly - start
this is not about perfection at all
15th of december i've said it will take 2-3 months to assembly minus the time needed to rise funds for all the purchasments
if i would like to keep this like that - we would be still on "fund rising" period here
bottom line? we're well before schelude - go figure!
2-3 months to assembly? It has been 5 months since I sent my money, and I cant even get an update as to when my order will ship. I appreciate the time and effort you are putting into another run of these boards, but I dont see how we are "well before schedule". Could I please get some kind of news as to when these will be shipping? It makes me nervous to send $180 to another country and 5 months later cant even get a status update or a ship date. Please let me know something.

Glad to hear about the positive outcome.
If there's sufficient interest, I'll finish the latest version of UFlash which handles AtariMax carts, Sic!, SIDE, MyIDE II, etc. It's rather more forgiving as far as the SDX situation is concerned, although the main problem is that SDX sometimes needs to be enabled on the target device in order for the flash banks to be accessible to the programmer. When SDX is damaged and hangs on boot, that's an issue.Anyway: if it's going to be useful to have a single utility which can handle all the major carts of 1MB or smaller, then I'll try and find some time to continue working on it.
Well, for me anyway, it was a process full of fear. I don't know if uflash needs to handle atarimax carts, it seems Steve has that handled very well with his software. It would be awesome to have the current crop of CF adapters in there. Maybe if there was a way to decrease the dependance of SDX running on the device to be flashed that would be helpful. Instead of trying to be a Swiss-Army type of flasher and handle everything it may just be better to make it handle the most common without having to have SDX in the mix. Just my opinion of course. I think uflash is awesome compared to how it used to be to update U1MB and Side.

First - FJC you are DA MAN!! I was really leery of swapping chips all over the place, but decided to go ahead and give it a shot. First, I took the .bin file you pointed me to, then did a copy /v file+file and did a binary burn to an 8Mb atarimax cart. Pulled those chips out and popped them into both Side2's. PERFECT! They both worked. I did read your caveat about the other software not recognizing the BRIGHT chips from the Atarimax cart, and didnt want problems in the future upgrading and such. So, I popped both original Side2 chips into the Atarimax cart and burnt it again. Replaced both chips back into their respective Side2's.. and now they both work perfectly (and contain the original chips). I wouldnt have believed this problem could be sorted without a programmer, but there you are. Thanks FJC, I wouldve never have solved this on my own. Much props to ya!
FWIW: Putting just one Side2 chip into the Atarimax cart didnt work, but when I had 2 in there it worked perfect. Go figure.

I couldnt find Trub's Side2 flasher. The beta uflash allowed me to select the Side2, but when I tried to flash it said "Please enable Spartdos X and reboot" then exited the program. I mentioned in my first post that the SDX in the Side2 is non-bootable, so this didnt work either. (I was booted from the SDX in the U1MB which is working fine). When I try to boot SDX from the Side2 (disable U1MB SDX), I get a "No DOS" error and cant do anything but reboot. Can you point me in the direction of Trub's flasher and I will give that a go?
-
The idea was to program one of the AtariMax ROMs and put it in the SIDE2, but no matter if you've already ordered a programmer.

LOL I fixed my U1MB using Trub's emergency repair routine a while back. It worked perfect, so that was what I tried with the Side2. It didnt work. I didnt try the reverse (programming one of the Atarimax chips and putting it in the Side2), actually that never occured to me. But, I think that if the Atarimax cart wouldnt recognize the Side2 chip, then the Side2 probably wouldnt work with the Atarimax chip. I'm not looking to destroy any chips in this process, which is exactly why I broke down and bought the programmer. It will all end well, when the programmer gets here (and if it works, I absolutely HATE ordering from Chinese companies, no RMA process).
-
I broke down and ordered a programmer. Should be here in 2 weeks. I should be able to sort it all out then. I tried the Atarimax 8mb cart chip swap thing, but it didnt recognize the chip from the Side2. I tried with the 800 but couldnt seem to get the timing right to successfully reprogram it. Thats why I ordered the programmer. I love my Atari, but having it down while I dont have a means to fix it is intolerable. Programmers are cheap enough now, there is no excuse not to get one and fix this thing the right way.

-
I dont have an EPROM burner or access to one. I will try to figure out how to get that image onto the chip through some other means. Thanks for the reply.

I have 2 Side2 carts. Being a nice human being I loaned one to a friend. When I got it back it would no longer boot the SDX in the cartridge (just blue screen with cursor in upper left, no farting or anything). I looked here in the forums and found that candle had released an upgrade Side2 XEX file. So, crossing my fingers, I put it on an otherwise blank CF card (in the FAT32 part of course). I flipped the switch up, and the Side Loader did come up and find the XEX. Well, I hit return on it, and I could hear the program load.. then it started flashing all kinda rainbow crap on the screen. I wasnt sure it was supposed to do that, so I let it run for about a half hour hoping it would come back to a screen I could read and say "flash success" or some such. It never did. I rebooted the Atari, and now I just get a black screen, well there is a brief flash of yellow when I cycle power, but thats it. I enabled my ultimate SDX and tried to boot from that, but same thing (with the switch in EITHER position). So, I guess it's bricked.. any way to revive it? An emergency flasher or something? I know it's the Side2 at issue, when I take it out my U1MB and Atari work fine. Luckily, since I have 2 it didnt kill me completely, but they weren't cheap and I bought 2 for a reason (I have about 4 Atari XL's and 2 800's - the 2nd was for those. I would really like to get that thing working again. Any helpful ideas/suggestions?

candle, I don't know what to say... I posted the above 2 weeks ago. I just asked for a status on these boards. I paid for them 4 months ago. I'm not asking for a rush job, but I sent close to $200 on the 10th of January and can't get an answer as to when I can expect what I paid for. Just an update would go a long way toward easing my anticipation.
-
candle, any ideas when these will be shipping?
-
Thanks for the quick reply! I am sorry about the money raising part. That was not me, but I do understand what you are saying. I wasnt complaining, just asking for some idea when I would be receiving. Everything is well. Thank you for making this run, it IS appreciated!
-
candle, I know perfection can't be rushed. I am pretty psyched to get this board and bring my 800s back to life. Is there any kind of timeframe as to when these will be shipping? I am not trying to be a nooj, but I paid a pretty long time ago and I would be very happy to see updates as to the progress of the build. And again, thank you for doing another run of this amazing piece of hardware, I have been wanting since your first couple runs.

SpartaDOS X Original Cartridge Update?
in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Posted
I am about to get an original SpartaDOS X cart. Is there any way to reflash it with a newer version of the OS? I'm quite sure I could "pop it open" and if it contains EPROMS re-burn them with a newer version, but is there an easier possibility? Also is it possible to use the RTC from Ultimate with the cart?
