  1. Dragon375,

I think you have missed the point here, I can't imagine any forum is going to sit happily with you selling software from their site, especially if they start getting cease and desist emails from current devs.

As I've said all along I'd love to see what is in the collection, chances are we will all have most of it but even if there's 10 items not seen anywhere it would be worth it to get them so they could be shared. So I imagine a few of us including me wrote PM's to you making you an offer of a little money (and yes you can disclose what I wrote) if only so it could be given to one of our FTP guys to be stripped of current stuff and put on display for all FREE.

And t here's the rub, wherever you put it eventually one of us will stump up just the once to get it and make it a free FTP and of course post back to that site saying where it is for free..

So it looks like you get to hold on to your stuff, or you could be a PROPER Atarian as you claim you are and do what we all have and pool the resources. You want to make money from Atari, sell your hardware, people here would jump at it normally but making money off the old games and new current stuff is frowned upon pretty much everywhere.

Even people like me who were part of the scene in the old days NEVER sold a single bit of software, never, I did swap yes but sell no, I know people who did, in fact my old friend was the first guy done in court for it but me personally, I just liked collecting and playing. Did it make me a good person back then, No, of course not but even I had some morals.

When I 'grew up' after the scene I wished I'd done things differently as I realised I'd helped shrink the flow of software from the Devs, I can't change the past but now I respect people's wishes and support the dev's, I even beta test stuff and trust me, it goes NOWHERE. I've known TMR on here for many years and as a reviewer he gets stuff before release to play with, ask him if I've ever asked him for a bit of software on any machine..Nope, not once, I'd never do that and I know TMR would tell me very quickly to go forth and multiply and rightly so.

I buy my bits on the C64 for 1.99 a go, its not a lot of money but the devs who I pay keep pumping out software which is brilliant..

The moral, if you respect the Atari folk then don't try and profit off them, if they want to share they will...You could do the same...

Wow, what an emotional post. You really think I am such a villain. If you scroll back to my original post in this thread, you would see that my original intention was to just try to break even on the deal. Everyone here just thinks I should just give up everything I have and go into debt to distribute what I have. Seriously? I am currently uploading to a server that will use it to build a website for the good of the community. I stated that at least 10 posts ago. I have cancelled my offer for the disks. The source of where I got the stuff is actually none of your business. But do know that I have invested in my software as well. Everyone here has been so sure of who I am and what I am doing that they find it impossible to even be civil. Which is why when push comes to shove, I decided to share it out to a server that will use it to create a site to benefit everyone. A point was made that a server might charge a "membership fee" to cover operating costs. Guess what, the nastiness started flowing again. Ratio sites and membership only servers have existed since back in the BBS days, and personally I was a member of quite a few. What do you suppose would have happened if I had suggested the owner of those site just drop all their membership criteria and let the general public eat their bandwidth with no way to support their sites. I can tell you, but I think you could probably guess their response. Sharing is great, but at the end of the day it isnt "sharing" if all you want is to leech the hard work of the collectors. All I hear is "Gimme Gimme Gimme". I have answered every point it was possible to answer. I agreed to remove anything that the copyright owners asked me to. Yet, I still listen to squabbling over what I am doing wrong. It really sounds like a bunch of sour grapes to me. And I hear it over and over in loads of versions. It is that very attitude that will kill the community. God bless the developers that are continuing to develop for A8. I drop cash to support them when they create something I want. I hope you do too. At the end of the day, what I do is my own responsibility. I dont see all those who run their mouths in this thread as following their own advice. Where are all THEIR sites, where are their sharing archives, are they really so near to sainthood that they condemn others in public, then try to swing the deal they bitch about in private? The very definition of sharing is a mutual trade-off, both benefiting.but for some odd reason what I offered was deemed non-mutual. Think about it.

  2. You're are partially correct, as i am not going to charge people, it was a "what if" alternative to the idea of selling a disc. Honestly he should have said the disc was $2 and shipping and handling was $18.

All this complaining did was cause him to decide not to share. Good job. I understand you are butt-hurt about being wrong about the gpl.

Actually, I did decide to share... just not here. All the bitching and then those same people PM'ing me to try to get a copy. No way do I want to be involved in that mess. You people really need to get a life. Even after I said I would remove software that people didnt want shared, the bitching continued. I am actually sorry I offered to share in the first place. It is surprising to me that so many people say they want to preserve this software, then act like it is their god-given right to tell me what I should do with archived material that physically resides with me. Some of the stuff is freely available on the web, some isnt. Go ahead and take your self-righteous asses out and download it yourself. Some of the archive was given to me from a couple of old school BBS sysops, and you really wont find that anywhere. Since they were given to me, it is my choice what to do with them. All your complaining is not going to force me to do anything. It seems to me that these complainers should brush up on their social skills when someone offers something they cant get elsewhere. All your arguments led me to believe that I picked the wrong group to offer it to. So, I wont. Simple solution, eh?

  3. What ever gave you the idea that I just "clicked" and downloaded any of this stuff? You make an assumption then ride my ass about it? This has gotten totally ridiculous. If the mods had locked the thread when I asked, then this flame-war would be over. There is only one person that has responded to this thread that even makes sense. So just stop. It has been a total waste of my time to even start this topic. I have already stated my position, so just take it or leave it. I dont feel I am in a position where I have to continually defend myself against all these assumptions. If it is so easy to just click and download this stuff, go do it, you dont need my copy. If you feel I am scamming on the back of somebody's hard work, good for you. I don't live or die on what you think anyway.

  4. I agree with reporting that scum. I do not agree with bringing it into this thread as though I am guilty of the same. I did not represent this collection as "my work" even though I do have a couple programs I wrote in there, Profit? Nahh, didnt want that either. Just trying to recoup the cost of the media, the wear and tear on my equipment to dupe it, and my effort doing the whole shipping and handling bit. Instead I get grief because you think I would make a profit. Not the kinda people I usually break my neck to help if ya know what I mean. You were alive yesterday and you will be alive tomorrow, the possession of this collection will not change that. I have heard too much about how I dont own this data. Hell, I know that. But the plain simple fact is.. I already have a copy, and so would a few others if this thread wouldnt have turned nasty. I thought better of the A8 community than this. This is not the only place I can go to share it. I could probably even setup my own A8 site. Maybe I will maybe I wont. I'm just not going to worry about sharing it if people think that gathering it all up and saving it all these years is worth nothing. I did it because the A8 was my first real computer and it still keeps me happy to this day. So, like I asked the moderator, please lock this thread. There's nothing more to say.

  5. Nahhh.. if it starts a war on here, what good would come from me dedicating pc resources to seeding? I just dont care for the politics and people that are so damn worried that I might actually get a dollar or two that I just dont really want to be bothered to do it. It's not just that I want to make a profit, I offered to do it where it didnt end up COSTING me to share it. Bit-Torrent is fine and all that, but who pays my utility bills when I have to leave my PC on for weeks on end to seed something that nobody feels I should get a thank-you for? I didnt start this thread to insult the people that are currently developing for the A8, it was mostly to make sure some of the older stuff lived on. I have already invested my time in getting a lot of the old archives that were once alive on the net, I dont want to make this into a lifelong crusade. Like I said earlier, I have had some of this stuff for over 20 years already. Maybe in another 10-15 years (when it really isnt available anywhere anymore), then I wont get made out to be such an ungrateful bastard if I share it. Till then, I wont.

  6. My collection is no longer up for distribution. I have listened to the advice in this thread, and find it too complicated a deal to be involved in. Not what I intended when I started it. Finding, getting and organizing the software was a pretty huge job and took me a long time. I thought I had asked a reasonable fee to distribute it, but there is no reason to expect me to invest further effort into it if I am not allowed to charge anything to recoup my investment. I will not violate others rights who developed this software. Until I can secure their permission, I dont have anything to share. This is really the last I will post about it. Moderator please lock this thread. I'm done.

  7. I have heard multiple viewpoints through this thread, and I have listened. I will remove the mentioned items from the archive (that was never a problem). I have already removed Altirra from the list. I will go through the rest and make the responsible edits. I never wanted to "screw" anybody out of their work. I'm beginning to see I may have been in error to even offer this collection in the first place. 30 year old copyrights, gnu releases and all that are beyond what I feel like dealing with. If I withdraw the offer, then all that goes away too. I can maintain my personal collection any way I see fit. In another 10-15 years when there really is none of this stuff around anywhere, then maybe the environment will be right for me to share. Until then, I will write it off as a bad idea, and apologize to anybody who felt I was trying to take away their rights to their hard work. It was not my intention to do so. I'm sorry. This collection will not be available from me until I can sort out the proper rights and permissions. End of subject.

  8. I am going through the content right now. I had included a copy of the Altirra emulator, but am removing that and am checking for any software by those voicing concerns. I will remove anything I think applies and will upload a revised listing when complete. Also, I think I will switch the content format to a 32GB usb flashdisk instead of a BD-R. I should have enough content to fill it. I never expected the negativity I have read here. I know I didnt write the majority of this stuff (I did write a few of the programs in there, but none of them took me 5 years to write). I am just trying to distribute an archive of some hard to find software. I invested a considerable amount of time and effort into putting this together. I am 54 years old and have been working with the A8 for almost 40 years. I had an 800 when they cost over a thousand bucks. I was active with MACE back in the day (got a large amount of stuff when they faded as well), and thats where most of this stuff came from. I dont have much of the software that was recently developed, nor do I really care to. I was offering to share (at a modest price) what I had collected. When I have gone through all the stuff and packed a 32GB flash with it, I will up a new file listing. It will not include anything written by anybody on this board. However, 32GB flashes arent free. If my collecting work is immaterial, then I am re-thinking about offering it to those who think it is.

  9. Nope, wasn't trying to "offend" anyone with the offer. I'm pretty sure that none of the software that people are claiming ownership of is included (if by chance it is, I will remove it upon notice). As I stated before, most of the content is based on old sites that are no longer online. So, if somebody has developed programs more recent than about 20 years ago, chances are it isnt in this collection anyway. If it is, I will remove it. I really didnt expect this type of reaction from people who seem to be interested in keeping the old stuff alive. And why is the fact that it took 3 years to collect immaterial? Look at the file list I uploaded - if "your" software is included, I will remove it. I doubt that it is, I didnt go round just grabbing software from everywhere. And I definately did NOT grab from current sites that are currently developing. All this grief and I really dont think anyone has even looked at the file list yet.

  10. All good, PM me which games I should remove. I have other content to fill in with. It took me about 3 years to collect all this stuff, and I am not looking to go against anybody's rights. If I need to add/remove stuff, I will. Just let me know what needs to change. Also, I realize that it may go against people's wishes to sell this disk, but as I said it is 3 years of work. I wont get rich selling them, but it IS a ton of software fairly cheap.

  11. I have put together roughly 23GB of Atari 8-bit programs, books, and misc on BD-R. I have several complete collections (Holmes archive, and several other collections that used to be online but have vanished. It would take weeks just to go through all the stuff on this disk. I am offering copies, not trying to get rich off this, but do want to make a few bucks. I am pricing copies at $20 + postage. Any interest, just PM me and we can work a deal.

I have attached a file listing in compressed format.

Hmmm. "Error you arent permitted to upload this kind of file" It's a 7-zip file. What kind of file can I upload? NVM, a RAR archive worked.

Check out the file list and let me know if there is any interest.

  12. When you flashed your U1MB, did the flasher report any problems while flashing?

Also, what ROM did you use?

I already answered this, but for some reason it didnt post... Flasher didnt report any errors. I used the ultimate build from SDX446 release.

Also tried the config.sys on D1: with no good result.

Is there a DOS version of the flasher available (one that doesnt rely on SDX)? I noticed the options in the ROM Builder to create a DOS bootable flasher .atr file, but I dont have the other component to make it work.

  13. Thanks for the links! Unfortunatly, something happened to my U1MB during this process and the SDX doesnt boot anymore, which means unless I can find a DOS version of the flasher, I am screwed. Not sure what happened, but when I try to boot with SDX enabled it just makes the farting noise and hangs, doesnt finish booting. The SDX in the side2 still works, but the flasher wont work with that version. Not sure where to go and what to do from here, but gotta fix my U1MB before I can get anything else working.

  14. Thanks for answering my questions so quickly. Where do I find these more recent versions of The ROM builder and FDISK? I think I have already tried every version I could find, with no luck. Is there a central place where all these updated files are available for download?

  15. OK, I got my SiDE 2 cart and have 3 computers with U1MB installed and working in them. I have been having a few problems with the configuration that maybe you folks would be so kind to give me a hand with. Here are the ones that I havent been able to figure on my own.

#1 - I realize by reading through this forum that I need to flash an updated PBI driver into my U1MB to get the .atr loader to work. My problem is that I cant get that to work, when I try to import the PBI rom into the ROM builder, it spits out an error "PBI ROM File Signature Mismatch" and it doesnt load in. I have tried ver 0.32 and 0.34, both give the same error.

#2- I know how to use the SDXImager program to mod SDX, but how do I actually flash it back into the cart? The only flasher I have gotten to work is the one for the U1MB, is there a different version to flash the SiDE2 cart?

#3- Just a general comment about the cart itself. It is a really nice looking and professionally built thing, but somebody should have measured the cart slot in a 1200xl a bit better. The thing barely fits in and when you do get it in, there is absolutely no way to access the switch. It is a really really tight fit. I had to remove some of the plastic cartridge assembly on my 1200 because I was afraid of breaking something with the amount of force it takes to get the cart in.

#4- I have had times where I got my SiDE2 all set up (FAT32 & APT) and the next boot it comes up as unformatted. I havent figured out what causes this yet, but it has been finals week at my college so I havent really had the time to get methodical with testing it yet. Is this a known problem, or am I correct in thinking it is probably something wacked in my configuration of it?

#5-Even with the issues I have had, I still think this is the most awesome thing I have bought for my Atari in years. I know it is going to be better still once I get some of these issues laid to rest, I just need some help before I go bald tearing my hair out.

    Thanks in advance
