Personally, I wouldn't bother hooking up a 2600 to an HDTV set. There's just too many static images that can cause damage over an extended period. I know it seems cool, but it's really not worth the risk. I have a 51" Hitachi HD set and only play stuff from 16-bit on up.

it's kind of an inside joke. 859415 Don't know why you would say that to me, I've never applied the 'true gamer' tag nonsense to anyone. As for your comments, Sonic is NOT about deep gameplay, but that doesn't make it a bad game. When compared to its contemporary and main competition Super Mario World, its a joke to even compare the two. There is way too much wasted space in the Sonic games, with the tubes and roller coasters. Mario brings plenty of eye candy, but along with it much of the space on the stages is utilized thanks to Mario's superman cape, not to mention the yellow, blue and red blocks that you need to unlock that expands each stage in the game 2-3 times. Quit baiting nonsensical arguments.

How long has your Jaguar passion run? How far has it to go?
Cobra Kai replied to justclaws's topic in Atari Jaguar
I don't believe this news. CDi yeah, i agree with that, 32X would be a very close tie, 3DO owns jaguar. read this as flame bait if need be, but I'd be willing to make a comparison chart proving what I say. 859463 By all means, knock yourself out. But please start a new thread about it. No need for you and your buddies to derail yet another thread. -
Do any other Genesis games besides Sonic 2,3 have any compatibility with the S & K cart? Say for instance, Sonic Spinball?
-
You can plug in Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 and play as Knuckles on those games if you use the S&K cartridge. Don't know why you wouldn't believe that...why do you think the S&K cart has the cartridge slot for? And yeah, the Sonic games are not about deep gameplay. Alot of the game is just watching sonic zip around as a ball thru roller coaster type stages.
-
Definitely: -Berzerk -Warlords -Donkey Kong Jr. -Crystal Castles -Ms.Pacman -Jungle Hunt I like the games made just for the 2600 home system better though. The Atari 5200 really did the arcade ports justice.

There's no need for comments like these. If this thread gets out of hand, it will be locked. 857482 Comments like what? Stating the obvious? Look I certainly don't mind a good debate on good and bad points of these Jag games, there's certainly alot of bad to talk about, but it's not even close to being done in a respectable and intelligent manner by saturn x. I don't know, maybe I'm just having a hard time comprehending his 3rd grade writing ability, or he's just being a childish troll about it all, along with his buddies that seem to want to keep baiting him.

How long has your Jaguar passion run? How far has it to go?
Cobra Kai replied to justclaws's topic in Atari Jaguar
I bought my first Jaguar on release day at a small game store called Mega Games. I played Cybermorph for hours on end, thought it was the coolest thing ever for awhile. Then I got the next release which was Trevor McFur, all the while breathing excited breaths about the impending release of AvP....it took forever for this game to come out. I built up a small collection of about 11 games by the time the Playstation was released, and then I sold all my Jaguar stuff to buy a PSX. In 2000 I decided to rekindle that Jaguar passion and bought a big collection on epay for a great price. I got a boxed Jag, boxed complete JagCD, and a bunch of complete games. Then I piecemealed a few more complete titles from epay, and came across a monster collection about 2 years ago which I bought(also on epay) in which I cherry picked the games, and kept the ones I needed, while selling all the duplicates. I now have 55 complete Jag and JagCD games, and I indeed enjoy it still and plan to never sell it unless circumstances are dire. The Jaguar is an interesting piece of gaming history. It has some of the greatest games ever made on any console, and it has some of the worst ever made as well. It was made in an in-between era of gaming, where none of the systems were truly great and developers were experimenting too much, but the Jaguar has the best selection of games over the 32X, CDI, and 3DO. It's fun to play these games, and it's VERY fun to collect for because for most average game collectors, the Jaguar library is actually one that can be completed as its library isn't even 100 games. Another thing about the Jaguar is the homebrew development, which I don't necessarily show much interest in, but I appreciate gamers who love this machine enough to make their own games. You don't see that on any consoles other than Atari consoles, and our fanbase while maybe smaller than some, is certainly awesome and dedicated. -
Would like to get a Jaguar, but...the controller!
Cobra Kai replied to ataridave's topic in Atari Jaguar
I love the Jag controller for comfort. What I don't like about it is the d-pad has no texture, so if you are the kind of gamer who can get sweaty hands, you might have a hard time keeping your thumb firmly placed on the d-pad sometimes. -
I don't really get your comparisons, Star Wars Arcade to Cybermorph? Why don't you actually compare games that are similar, like for instance Doom. 32x Doom was butchered to get it to run on the machine, and it came out only slightly better than the SNES version. It doesn't run in full screen, and has an atrocious frame rate, even with the reduced screen size. Jag Doom is highly playable, at full screen, and even supports a save feature that is strikingly absent from the almighty 32x. Wasn't Mortal Kombat II already done quite well on the Genesis? Thats a problem that Sega had back then, they didn't bring out much in terms of new and original games for the Genesis add-on systems, they kept bringing out the same games for the SegaCD and even older games on the 32X, talk about a ripoff. I mean, they released some very old arcade ports to the 32x, even older than the Amiga ports that made it to the Jaguar. Games like After Burner 1 and Space Harrier 1, both of which while not only very ancient(they were on the Master System for pete's sake), had already saw sequels on the Genesis itself, and both After Burner II, and Space Harrier II were better than the 32x counterparts. The 32x is an atrocious machine with possibly the worst game library of all time, next to the Tiger Game.com. There is really no defense of it, it doesn't have a single killer app, like Tempest 2000. It doesn't have any game even close to the quality of Rayman, in either graphics, gameplay, or Audio. In direct comparisons with the same games on both machines, the Jaguar clearly wins hands down, and the Jaguar has more variety in its library, especially concerning games that someone might actually want to play. I mean, where are the strategy games for the 32x? The Jaguar has many, Syndicate, Cannon Fodder, Worms, Theme Park, Attack of the Mutant Penguins...all established and successful games. What about any platform game that can compete with Rayman, Zool 2, or Pitfall? Any good Pinball games to be had? Jeez, ok so you don't like the Jaguar after all, atleast you tried it, but to come in here and try to make it your new life's work to somehow convince people here that the Jaguar sucks, well I got news for ya it ain't gonna happen. It's not the best machine of all time, not in the least, but it most certainly demolishes the pitifull 32x, which in most respects turned out worse than the Genesis and is a huge black mark that pretty much sealed Sega's future in the console market, because they never recovered from the 32x disaster. Atari's fate was similar, except their demise started not with the Jaguar, but with the crash of 84 and the release of the 7800. This is the reason Atari didn't have the backing and the funding(including poor ownership, Tramiels) to make the Jaguar as good as it should have been, but we did see stuff on it that was killer, and warrant owning the machine. Only reason I own a 32x is because I got it very cheap, and it's ok as a collectors system, but there's not a single game on there that is a killer app.

It's not the best shooter in the world, but it does indeed have very nice graphics, it's more than average difficulty, and has some of the most unique special weapons of any shmup I've ever seen. If Atari would have just did away with all the cinema and story regarding McFurball himself, and gone with just the shooter part, that would improve it overall I think. Back in the day, that screenshot with the giant skeleton on the back of the box made me want to buy this game, I had not seen anything that pretty in a game before.
-
The Jaguar does not have a fighter or racing game equal in quality to Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing Deluxe. Other than that though, there is no comparison to the Jaguar and 32x, in both performance and game libraries, the Jaguar blows the 32x away in just about every aspect. . . . . . *waits for 32x fanboys to arrive.

DISCOVERY CHANNEL AND THE ULTIMATE ATARI COLLECTOR
Cobra Kai replied to popnation's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It should be me, because I'm good looking and not a dork, I could represent the community well. But these tv stations always like to get the geekiest, fattest slobs they can muster to represent whatever it is they are showcasing. Star Wars? Haha, Star Trek?, haha, action figure shows? yes...more bald fat slobs with grease stains on their shirts from all the potato chips and popcorn they eat. -
Don't worry, I'm sure Buy-Rite will be back under another name. It's the way of the Scamurai.

N64 is a great machine. Everyone always mentions the same games though, I get the feeling alot of people haven't really tasted all the system has to offer. People hardly ever mention: -Starcraft 64: A great port of the PC classic, including all the Broodwar levels if you have the expansion pak. Decent resolution, and Blizzard utilized the N64 controller quite well to compensate for the lack of mouse/keyboard. Multiplayer is hindered to 2 players, but can still be fun for beginners. Experts should just play the PC game. -Command & Conquer: revamped and updated levels along with updated 3d graphics. Again, great controller utilization, and good cursor speed. Sadly no multiplayer. -Tony Hawk 1,2,3: I always thought the TH games were just a tad bit better on the 64, but thats just me. -San Fransisco Rush 1,2,3: Beetle Racing is good, but it doesn't beat these fantastic arcade ports sans 2(which is a N64 exclusive). Beetle Racing is better than the first Rush, I'll concede that, but Rush 2049 is a dream come true and blows away any other racer on the system. -Ogre Battle 64: Classic and I don't like rpg's. Its not a real rpg anyway, more of a strategy game with rpg elements. Probably why I can get into it. -Doom 64: Definitive console version of the Doom. Best graphics, alot of brand new levels, lots of secrets and plenty of enemies on screen that the N64 handles smoothly. Also, an exclusive weapon to the N64(I believe), the Alien gun. There's alot to choose from on N64, I also dig Starfox, 1080 Snowboarding, Nuclear Strike, and there are a couple great F1 style racing games, and some GT style racers like World Driver Championship and GT64 which aren't bad. Plus if you were a wrestling fan back then, the N64 had the best wrestling games around by far.

NO EXCUSE for not buying a Flashback 2.0
Cobra Kai replied to sidcrowe's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm surprised you didn't apply that reasoning to the guy who said this (which easily could be done): I think that passage plays the same way. Insulting people he doesn't know, and has no clue what sort of fans they are or passion they have, what care and work they've put in to this and is making sweeping statements before the game list or anything else has been released. Let alone hasn't even seen the console. These "people" took the time to develop and push for reproduction of actual 2600 hardware, which is what's under the hood. These "people" took the time to get new games. These "people" have been working with homebrewers and others to include their games. These "people" have been working their asses off to try and infuse some of the original Atari back in to the "new" one (which by the way, is a seperate entity from that "French" company. They have a stake in it but basicly leave it alone). It just pisses me off to no end when I see some of the statements that have been made by people in this thread. Don't want to buy it, fine. I've seen some good and fair reasons people have given for not wanting to. A good deal of the rest of them have been based on some ridiculous assertions though. 849722 You haven't seen me say anything bad about people who are buying this thing. You see I believe people can buy whatever they want with their own money, which some of you obviously have a problem with. I could care less if people buy it really, but the question was asked why 'not' to buy it, and my answer was given to the original poster, who in reply states that if you don't buy it you don't support the Atari scene. -

Uhg., I've already quoted you once in my previous post, here it is again for you to read: Not interested in homebrews? The idea that people could cook up new games? I guess this FB2 purchase sorta defines one's feelings about the Atari community. You're either passive or active. It takes money to keep this website up, and it took work to produce the FB2. This unit is inexpensive Ok, there's your insinuation that I don't support this website, or the community for that matter. You're being a troll and a jerk by insulting people you don't know just because they don't want what you want. I may remind you that you are the one who asked why people weren't buying it in the first place. You got your answers, now live with it. -

I don't care about French Atari. The real Atari had their chance at redemption, and they blew it 10 years ago. French Atari is trying to sell me a haircut when I don't have any hair. It's called the free market, learn about it. And how dare you accuse people you don't even know, who've been here longer than you, of not supporting AA. I don't buy 2600 homebrews but I have purchased a few Jag games and 5200 repros when they were available. I'm glad you are happy spending your own money on something you want. See, you do know a little about the free market. I love it when the communist in people comes out, it makes me giggle. 849536 -

I don't expect the Atari brand to get strong, and I have no stake, nor care if it does or not. I'm also not interested in homebrews. -

Cobra Kai replied to sidcrowe's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Meh. Not even interesting to me. When I'm already overloaded with consoles, and plenty of actual 2600 games, this thing is just a useless toy that I won't derive the same enjoyment from that I would get from actually playing my VCS. -
The Jag CD is worth it if you can get it for under $100. I've seen complete units go for ridiculous prices in the past, upwards of $250. It has some redeeming value with the VLM which is amazing, also Battlemorph, Iron Soldier 2, and Baldies are worthy games to play. Overall its an item that mostly only the hardcore of us Jag fans are going to enjoy thoroughly. I hardly ever use mine, but its something I don't want to be without either.

Zappers aren't rare at all, no matter the color. Value? $.25

I've never once had to re-login on the old server. Now every time I visit the site since the upgrade I have to login manually. It won't hold for some reason. And if you aren't logged in, you don't get the benefit of seeing whats marked as 'read'.

Actiplaque on Sega Genesis carts!?
Cobra Kai replied to rockman_x_2002's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Get a generic paper plate(not glossy kind), and put some regular potato chips on it for awhile. Remove the chips and the plate is what some video game labels look like after 20 years.
