Now this is a huge collection any takers?
Cobra Kai replied to sega saturn x's topic in Atari Jaguar
Thats a nice collection...I'd like to buy it up, and then sell off my current Jag collection. -
oh man that Peter Pepper Ice Cream Factory would be another awesome game on the 5200...! I'd buy one...and for the record Ken, I purchased a copy of Beef Drop and I'm very impressed with how well it replicates the original! Awesome game.

rofl... "remember, if you get caught..." "..yeah I got it, I don't know nothin!"
-
it's awesome living on the 'wild' side...

If you buy the SE version, you get the Native demo CD. Also, doesn't SE have a different soundtrack? I like the SE soundtrack, but I've read some people prefer the original. Either way its got cool music.

Just wondering if all the infograme hoopla is going to affect the repros and hacks that are already 'in' the market. Are they essentially illegal products that we are not allowed to sell on ebay? Not that I am going to sell my repros on ebay, but if I had to for some reason...I could get in trouble? I can understand a black market for firearms, and drugs...but a black market for video games? Think about how ridiculous that sounds.

I agree, the 32X performance wise is a real dog. Jaguar DOOM vs. 32x DOOM....roflmao. No contest.... The 32x is probably the worst thing Sega ever did, and if you need a good example of a craptacular library that made no sense, look no further than that machine. How about a version of Space Harrier that wasn't even as impressive as the much older, and already established Space Harrier II for the mother ship Genesis? Even though the 32x did churn out updated and smoother running versions of both Virtual Fighter and Virtua Racing(deluxe)....that library overall was a complete disaster. I mean, the 32x games make the Jaguar library look phenomenal. Also, I want to add, it's simply not fair to compare the Jaguar with PSX and Saturn, as the Jaguar was released a couple years prior to those machines. The Jaguar does deserve some credit for pioneering 3D video games on a home console, albeit they weren't spectacular in retrospect. Some of them are pretty fun though, I still like I-War, and it suffers from some problems that even console 3D games STILL suffer from today...such as poor camera control. Jaguar takes entirely too much heat for its generally poor 3D efforts, when it was the only machine really attempting to take console gaming to that next level. Iron Soldier is a good example of a game that opened gamers eyes to the wonders of 3D...I know personally, after buying this game when it was released, I was stunned and thought: "this 3D stuff is awesome".

I'm a Jaguar fan because I rule.

I've never seen that thing. I thought it was about that old 400/800 computer.

hmmmmmmmmm- 800XL - smaller, nicer package - no goofy TV switch no need for a 20x20 footprint for the console. Better joysticks, better keyboard Now, If we could get a 512 in 1 cart for the XL series hehe...the 5200 is HUGE but thats what is so awesome, and it looks futuristic, and has a nice sleek design. The 800 was not a small machine, I don't know why people think this. The 800 is still quite large, I mean it has 2 cartridge slots with a cover, and it fits a keyboard on the machine itself...the thing is every bit as big...its just uglier, and everything is exposed. The 5200 console has a housing for to hold the two controllers, which is really what makes the console so large to begin with. But it does self contain every component, so after putting the controllers in the housing, and wrapping the AV cord around the base of the console, you are left with just the console...it's a pretty neat setup really. The 5200's sleek and smooth design also helps make it very easy to keep clean, with just a swipe of a cloth, you can get all the dust off of it. The 800 is basically a dustrap with that ugly keyboard. Now don't get me wrong, the 800 is awesome, but I just think its ugly. I just believe that a huge advantage of the 5200 is in it's presentation, and for collectors, presentation is always something to consider...I love to display my games.
-
-Trackball controller. -Dual robotron and Space Dungeon sticks...the difference being that you get that awesome controller holder and don't have to make your own. -The 5200 is a heck of alot prettier....just a better overall presentation than that ugly brown box. Better packaging all around, better cartridge design, label design, box design etc....
-
did you have a cartridge in it? If there is no cartridge, or the cartridge is not FULLY inserted, the machine will not power up.

Curt, I'm gonna respectfully disagree with your assertion that the games are what made the 5200 not as successful as it should have been. If that was the case, and it was true that the Colecovision had a better game library, then why did the Colecovision not come out on top and survive thru the game crash? Truth is, that both of these systems had great game libraries, but they just could not survive the beating the market took thanks to Atari's lack of any kind of control over third parties in the market. The game selection of the 5200 is exactly what it should be, and it's exactly what gamers of the day wanted. Of course they are updated versions of 2600 games. That is not all they are though. The 5200 games are improved ports of everyone's favorite arcade games, not mearly updated 2600 games(except activision). Gamers wanted to play Arcade games at home in 1983. That is what Atari was. This is why all the games are Arcade games, and that there are very few dedicated home titles from Atari. They left that to the 3rd parties, and even then, 3rd party titles were Arcade games most of the time, i.e. CBS games, Parker Brothers, and Sega. Activision was one of the premier developers of original titles dedicated for the home market, and they did not show well in the 5200 market. 1983 simply did not contain the same market strategies that we see today. It wasn't about who was going to get the best original titles, or the best and biggest RPG's. It was about being able to replicate the Arcade experience at home, so I just can't accept any criticism of the game catalog of the 5200, when it very clearly represents the cream of the crop in Arcade games of the day, and quite faithfully I might add. We all drooled over Pac-Man remember?
-
It certainly is not the games. It's not even the controllers. The primary reason for the demise of the 5200 is directly related to the horrible games released for the Atari 2600. The 2600 brought down the entire industry. The 5200 has the best game library of it's time, primarily thanks to how well it was able to faithfully represent the Arcade games that it ports. Atari took great pains, and alot of tender loving care to bring hardcore gamers what they deserved, with the 5200 library. Trak-ball games like Centipede and Missile Command, along with a near perfect ports of Defender ,Jungle Hunt, Pengo, Pac-Man...you can go on and on about how awesome the games are. Unfortunately Atari let 3rd parties run wild in the market, and the rest is history.

Hey guys, Thanks for some good posts. I get the feeling that you guys are getting the wrong idea here though. I want to go in a direction where we look at the Jaguar library just by itself, it's not about comparisons, or about what games are system sellers. What I'm trying to get at here is, good games are good games, regardless if it's a port, or if it was done slightly better on a more advanced system. Yes, the Jaguar library is filled with ports from the Amiga, but that doesn't make them bad games. Syndicate, Cannon Fodder, Theme Park, Worms, Pinball Fantasies, Mutant Penguins, etc....these games are found on other platforms, but nevertheless, they are still GOOD quality titles. I get the feeling that some of you don't want to count these games just because they are ports. If we only count the exclusive Jaguar games that are good, then yes, we are left with an even smaller selection of games. Think of it this way...imagine that the Jaguar is the only game console on earth (rofl), and then take a look at the library...forget that those games are ports and are available on other machines. You have to admit that alot of these games are very fun to play...and all I'm trying to point out here is that there are more good games than there are bad games on the system. I'm not trying to sell Atari Jaguars here, you can't do that, because like Starcat pointed out, it doesn't have enough vareity and exclusives to do it. It does lack in certain genres, especially sports, which is what sells systems more than anything. Also, I'm not saying the Jaguar library is superior to any other library, because its not...there's no way it could ever be, because there simply aren't enough games for it to compete. The titles that I listed in bold above are games I felt have good gameplay, regardless if they were available on some other machine. Yeah, its disappointing that they didn't meet what we thought were going to be 64-bit quality titles, but it's been 11 years, so looking back its just an old game now. Old games that you can look back at and see that they are pretty fun.

Lets take a look at the Jaguar library in its entirity, or as much as I feel like putting down here. Feel free to add any comments. Please remember this is my opinion, and also my own experiences, and some games are not listed because I have not played them. Some games I have not played are included due entirely to reputation, like Battlesphere. I want to try and put to rest this myth that the Jaguar only has a couple of good games. It's a media driven myth, for how many times have you heard from people that have never played the Jag, that "I heard that machine sucks" or "it doesn't have any good games" or something along those lines? Certainly I can recognize the horrible games, as well as most of us here. Jaguar fans are not blinded by fanboyism, which is another perception I think is spread throughout the gaming community. We're just fair, and are not bound by comformism in which only serves to keep people from enjoying alot of 'good' games, simply because these games did not meet popular standards of the time. Good games are good games, lets be honest and see just how BAD the library is. OK, lets start with the truly bad games that gave this machine its reputation in the industry, and I'm talking real turds here. Stuff you would just assume to burn. Games that I see the most negativity about. -Checkered Flag -Club Drive -Air Cars(hard to count this one, its so rare) -Double Dragon V(this was bad on all consoles) -Bubsy -Fight For Life(some like it, but not me) -Supercross 3D -White Men Can't Jump -Dragon Bruce Lee (Sorry I really hate this game) -Blue Lightning -Highlander Ok thats it for those...that was quick. Now we can discuss the truly great games on the machine, these games wind up on most peoples top ten lists when discussing Jaguar. Some games I feel are great simply because they are really fun games, not groundbreaking, but they are good examples of tried and true designs in their field. Mostly these games are titles that I think anyone who's played them, would have a hard time saying they were bad games: -Alien vs. Predator -Doom -Wolfenstein 3D -Attack of the Mutant Penguins -Battlesphere/Gold -Cannon Fodder -Defender 2000 -Flashback -Hyper Force -Iron Soldier 1 & 2 -I-War -Missile Command 3D -NBA Jam TE -Pinball Fantasies -Power Drive Rally -Protector/SE -Raiden -Rayman -Ruiner Pinball -Skyhammer -Soccer Kid -Super Burnout -Syndicate -Tempest 2000 -Theme Park -Ultra Vortek -Val d' Essiere Skiing -Worms -Zool 2 -Battlemorph -Dragon's Lair -Space Ace -Primal Rage -Braindead 13 WHEW!...I'm tired after that...thats alot of good games that any gamer would have fun with. 34 games, thats more than three times the amount of games I have listed as horrible. Name another system with that kind of good/bad ratio. I'll list the games that I think are just OK, but some probably think are better than average. These are certainly nothing to warrant buying a Jaguar for IMHO. -Baldies -Cybermorph -Atari Karts -Breakout 2000( I really like this one, but I think others do not) -Brutal Sports Football(another one I like ALOT, but to be fair alot of people don't) -International Sensible Soccer -Fever Pitch Soccer(you like soccer or you don't) -Flip Out -Zoop -Evolution Dino Dudes -Trevor McFur( good shooter, too cutesy) -Kasumi Ninja( I love this one) -Pitfall -Troy Aikman Football -World Tour Racing -Vid Grid -Myst -Hover Strike/CD Now, I do play some of these games above, so they aren't BAD games, or games that I would point out as being reasons for the Jagaur's demise. They certainly didn't do anything to sell machines though, so that in and of itself is bad in the end. I really just wanted to point out that its complete bullcrap to say that the Jag's library is awful, or mostly horrible etc...Be fair, look at these lists....my conclusion is that the Jag's library is actually mostly good, its just that it's virtually impossible to convince the majority of gamers believe it. Yes, its too bad there aren't more games. Yes, its too bad that the Jaguar didn't fill the shoes Atari set with it, with it's "do the math 64-bit" campaign. But that doesn't mean that the library is just filled with bad games.

My God, We really were nerds.

Wolf3d runs better than DOOM, but I think DOOM is the funner game, as it has an overall more immersive experience. The things about Wolf 3d that are better than DOOM, to me, are the totally awesome framerate and great in-game music. But Jag Doom just beats out Wolf in about every other category after that, with better graphics, better level design(by a wide margin), plus I like fighting demons and monsters in Hell...its just so fun. Both are awesome games though. The one thing I wish Jag Doom had, was the Cyberdemon...thats the only thing I think it lacks...I don't mind the absence of in-game tunes, I get a kick out of the sound f/x anyway.

I have a tg-16, but I have only played what I own for the thing, so I'll give some praise for the ones I like that I have: -Bloody Wolf -Devil's Crush -Klax -Splatterhouse -Chase H.Q. -Pac-Land -Ninja Spirit -Sidearms -Gunboat Now keep in mind that the TG-16 is a shooter powerhouse if you can get into the Japanese games which will require a jap console or a Kisado converter.
-
-Ogre Battle -Super Mario All Stars -Final Fight -Magic Sword -Saturday Night Slam Masters -Rampart -Simcity -Sunset Riders -The Combatribes
-
Oh yeah, I guess I didn't mention it, well I purchased these games from him: -Power Drive Rally -Breakout 2000 -Troy Aikman Football -Zoop -Theme Park -Atari Karts These are MINE now
-
I just completed a transaction with Jerry, and everything was perfect! Just wanted to give some praise in this thread since he doesn't have many posts here at AtariAge. Trust ME, you can buy with confidence from this member. p.s. the games are in excellent condition too for you collectors out there.

-
