Well, I still can't get the controls to work. So I don't know what I might be doing wrong. I've tried both playing on my keyboard and via a USB gamepad. I loaded a different game and it plays just fine. I guess Jumpman Jr. just doesn't like me.
It's still tricky to pull off - press the - key first (which I think is Asterisk). Then press Start (F2). Then select your speed by pressing 3. I'm just spelling it out in case you didn't try this after changing the firmware/BIOS.

I'm having the same problem in both Altirra and Kat5200. Nothing I do seems to work...and as you said, oh well...
Seems like I have this problem every time the 5200 HSC starts up. I can never get the controls to work. I think last time I wound up uninstalling everything and doing a fresh install of the programs before I could finally play.
I got it to work in Altirra by changing the firmware from OG 4-port 5200.ROM to the AltirrOS that Altirra defaults to.

I finally started to play HZD: Forbidden West!
Played it 90 hours. So many missions to explore and do! Rather than try the final battle mission, I just watched a play-through on YT and called it quits. RIP actor who played Sylens, and Broyles on Fringe.

I always wonder how those super scaler games would've fared if they had ported them to the Sega CD.
I have wondered this as well. However, based on the slower frame rates of the games that do use the Sega CD scaling (Batman Returns looks to be about 20fps max), I'm not sure the Sega CD could handle those super scaler games nearly as well as 32X did. Leave it up to the hobbyists to someday try it.

I tried it, nothing registers. Game won't start, oh well.

I can't get the game to start in Altirra. It plays the music, shows several named screens, repeat. Start / button press or pressing 1/2/3 etc don't do anything. ??

Thanks for the head-up on this project, I am super impressed! They got that SH-2 performing so well! A lot of Saturn games only used 1 SH-2 CPU and still were impressive enough for the day. I'd assume that Saturn Tomb Raider didn't use the 2nd SH-2 chip for geometry at all. I wonder if that is revealed in any online interviews. Of course Saturn has the advantage of more RAM than 32X and the powerful VDP1 and VDP2. I need to rewatch this video a few times.

It didn't matter after the first day of owning a game - fun is fun , dull is dull, regardless if a game flickers or not. I will say that Activision's no-flicker policy, and because they designed to the strengths of the 2600 hardware as opposed to porting a far more advanced coin-op game, made their games visually impressive over many of Atari's - at least for a while. Once GCC got involved, the Atari published games became a lot more exciting and impressive. I'm surprised Activision didn't make a maze chase game after Pac-Man became so popular.
I also have also found many of the earliest 2600 Activision games to be on the dull side. The earliest Activision game I actually liked was 1981's Kaboom! It had simple visuals, but it moved so fast with great sound effects and paddle-controls, that game is still one of my favorite 2600 games. I liked a lot of the next wave of Activision titles (1982 and later) like Megamania, Pitfall, especially River Raid, Enduro, Keystone Kapers, and HERO. But I love the Activision Anthology compilations and love to explore all those other games - like Barnstorming, a game I'd never have bought back then.
Incidentally, I think the worst game I've ever seen on 2600 was 3D Tic Tac Toe. Ugly and annoying to play! But then its author Carol Shaw went on to make my favorite game, River Raid!

BUMP!
I've been devoting a lot of time to HZD Forbidden West. What a (another) gargantuan game. I found the 3 sub-systems of Gaia, then I started to explored areas I couldn't finish before - now I have the breath mask to dive in lakes long, and the ability to handle metal flower / question mark places. I just fought a huge mechanized plesiosaur and it was awesome. My strategy is: get the high ground and take 'em out. Enjoying this sequel, but I really really don't have the time it requires.

Chiming in, Touring Car doesn't have enough depth. It has a sense of speed and engaging music, but the graphics are too low-res and lack the detail and color to accurately see things like upcoming turns. That could be forgiven, but it is super shallow. I always felt it was fun for an hour or so, but unlike any Daytona or Sega Rally Championship, there just isn't that incentive to replay Sega Touring Car. I don't think its graphics are superior to either Daytona CCE or Sega Rally. In this sense it reminds me of Manx TT on Saturn. Manx TT has a great first impression, but doesn't have enough courses and modes to keep you replaying it.
My ratings are: SRC > Daytona CE (JN) > Daytona CCE > Daytona OG > Manx TT > Sega Touring Car.

The guys behind the 2600+ are no dummies, they'll surely get KR and sell thousands!

I'm catching up on recent AA posts, just wanted to give credit where credit is due to you, JVR. HERO was super-fantastic, what a fun and great game for 2600, I still play it and enjoy it. Haven't seen your new HB game yet but eventually I will.

I played a whole lot of pinball FX in the last week, on my PS4. Wild West rampage, and Jaws are the tables I’ve played the most. Also Indiana Jones and Funhouse. I’m really hooked on Jaws now that I’ve played it and understand it better. It surprises me how complex pinball games can be.
