  1. Tonight was the 2nd and final theatrical screening of this, so I went. It was mostly folks over 50. Lots of knowing laughter at Kirk holding the book at arm's length, and also how he sneaks out his reading spectacles on the bridge.

I've seen this film many times, yet I still enjoyed seeing it on the big screen like I did back in 82. Enjoyed the interview with Bill Shatner at the beginning too.

The score really lent a lot of energy to the scenes. I was humming the motifs on the drive home.

Oh man, those ear wig scenes made me cringe!

  2. I never watched or played Curling, but I tried out your demo. I can see where it is going, but you have analog control , so playing via emulation just doesn't work. It's all or nothing for the direction and power I set. I can play it on a real 5200 but my hardware is not currently hooked up, so all I can do today is try it on emu.

Very nice to see a new RealSports 5200 game.

  3. I'm not sure I've ever given a film a review rating of 4.5 / 10. Can't remember EVER seeing anybody else give a film that precise ranking either. Rarely do I dislike something so much that I'd give it under 5/10. Those films I usually intuitively don't go to see. But 4.5. Huh. I'll ponder about that review all night now. :)

I was hoping Passengers would be at least as good as the other sci-fi films in the 'trilogy' of films you mentioned. Seems like nobody likes it. I've read the story synopsis, and it douse sound uninteresting to me. So I just read other people's reviews of it.

  4. I saw the film twice, and liked it equally both times. I did find my mind wandering during the first half on the 2nd viewing however. Maybe it is a bit slow early on. Its not the actors but the SW universe that catches your attention. I think as soon as Jedha City is destroyed, the film picks up the pace double-time - Vader, rebels, land and space battles, death, more Vader! And I have no problems with CGI Tarkin.

I liked all the characters and they are growing on me more, limited as their screen time was. The only one I don't really care about is the oft-mentioned "Saw". I don't know his character even though I did watch much of The Clone Wars (can't remember him). So I didn't related to him at all.

How about that K-2SO, though! :)

  5. The Star Destroyers, to me, looked exactly like the ANH models of Star Destroyers.

Re: R2D2 and C3PO - the rebels hadn't left Yavin yet. They were mobilizing. So although not shown, I assume the droids got onto the blockade runner shortly afterwards, and I assume Princess Leia did at the same time. Strange that she'd be taken to a battle though. I don't like to overthink things when it comes to fantasy films. :)

Lots of nerdy info about the Tantive IV and the Organas here - I like that somebody fleshed it all out. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tantive_IV

Tarkin wasn't 100% of the way there yet, but I didn't mind. Have you ever watched any SW film where you didn't immediately think of a character as an 'effect', be it CGI or even puppet? I was impressed that they tried and mostly succeeded in having Peter Cushing in this. I couldn't tell if the X-wing pilots were CGI's or new actors who look similar. I thought I saw Biggs - one of the pilots had that mustache, didn't he? But the net tells me no Biggs.

  7. I count it as a real privilege and treat to have heard all the seminars in my home town of Pittsburgh. Last year was great too. Perhaps there could be a better form of advertising for the seminars. I heard TV and radio programs talking about the show - but it was focusing on the show itself and the Pinburgh aspect.

Thanks for your efforts, Mike. Hope there is another Replay FX, with similar seminars , next year. The seminars were all recorded on video - where will those videos be available? Youtube?

  8. I disliked the overly long comics version, and didn't read much of it. But I just got back from CA3: CW , yet another great Marvel film which is a smaller MCU version of that story. I agree with your comments about the villain, Zemo. He had an intelligent and effective plan, but he wasn't as villainous as I had expected. shades of grey apply to his motivations and actions.

The film was a lot of fun. Loved Spider-Man, loved T'Challa. Was VERY surprised at the length & scenes of the airport battle.

Overall, on first watch, I loved Winter Soldier a little more than this. Not sure why. Perhaps I'm just tired tonight.

  9. I had similar thoughts, and I wondered if perhaps the film was so heavily edited that the why's weren't communicated to us.

For example, 'why' Rey had such a quick ramp-up of Force and piloting abilities. (possible, but not sure, answers -- she could have been Force-taught as a little girl, especially if she's a Skywalker; then again, if she *is* a Skywalker, remember young Anakin had abilities before he even knew what the Force was... plus, she could have been familiar with the Falcon, it had sat there for years as garbage)

Or 'why' Rey and even Finn could survive a battle with Kylo Ren. (the film did show he was emotionally vulnerable after the bridge/Han scene; also Chewie just nailed him in the side with his bowcaster. So Finn was nowhere near at 100%. But still, surprised Finn could fight him off and not get decapd - then again, Finn had fighting training as a Stormtrooper... but then again not using a lightsaber... )

But in the end I've decided to just go along with the presented story. Nothing was as bad as certain scenes from the prequels. (like when young Annie "accidentally" reached and destroyed the main droid ship.. ugh!) .
