I forget if the 5200 version had the "safe zones" escape routes where you could escape ghosts going upwards right above or below the ghost-pen. I think it did actually so I don't know.

I believe the 5200 version follows that safety rule where the ghosts can’t go up above the pen. But I have seen the pink monster do it more than once in the A8 version, that might be a bug.

I agree about the pinpoint collision being unfair in all these versions.  They fixed that, and cornering, in 5200 Ms PAC.

  2. If you are crashing too much, my advice is this: slow down. You do not have to drive at top speed all the time.  Especially around steep curves, or when you can’t see what’s coming due to the hills, slow down a bit.  Especially in the first races, you can still come in first place or second driving at a controllable speed. It’s crashing and getting arrested that will ruin your race.

    476,030    new score

That is a great score. I've yet to pass 400k , I played a couple rounds just now but I was not one with the Force.    The Qix A.I. is quite interesting - they'll play cat-n-mouse with you, I swear its reading my mind.   It can worm its way into a tight corridor, but only if it wants to.   The thing that usually kills me is getting caught with a close-by Qix and 2 Sparx ambush me, I try to draw around them but Qix kills me. Drawing the double-box at the top is a helpful strategy to keep the latecomer 2 Sparx trapped, but its not always possible to draw it when a Qix is very interested in that section of the screen.  I imagine cashing in with two X9 bonuses, and getting at least 85% on that round, will put you well over 400k.  I don't think I've gotten 2 X9's in one game - often I am pretty much forced to cash-in early, before I get to X9.

so...for those that played it, how bad was cosmic carnage?

I think it is terrible.  But I still play a few rounds now and then. Maybe I'm missing its charms.

  5. Like others, I don’t find 32X chaotix very fun. But I still appreciate it and enjoy it at times. The reason being, its parts are unique and somewhat nice, some nice music, interesting use of color and concepts, I like the 3-D bonus rounds with flat shaded polygons, and I like the big red Metal Sonic boss too.

it doesn’t compare to Sonic The Hedgehog however!  Sonic is a 10/10 game to me, and Chaotix is a 6/10 at best.

  6. I have yet to play it, but I have watched others play it online and seen videos reviewing it.

Frankly, the game appears to be extremely well designed and engineered. There are all kinds of cool ideas, variety, and things to do in the game. Graphically, I can’t think of a more impressive stock hardware 2600 game. Everything from the colors, the animation, the art, to the parallax scrolling, is impressive and eye pleasing.   It is easy to see this was made by a couple of experienced masters.

  7. The 5200/A8 version of River raid had the perfect upgrades from my point of view. You get two toned craggy river banks, the darker tone didn’t destroy your jet so you had a little more wiggle room;  the bridges are numbered, and you can start at different bridges, plus the extra tanks and enemies.  Even the analog flight control was easy to get used to.   An optional soundtrack would’ve been awesome to have though!  Hmmmm… good idea actually. Hack river raid, adding a two or three channel background soundtrack. 😀
