  1. I hope this exceeding expectations crowfunding will make Atari to reconsider (provided they have enough capital) the console's specs hardware-wise and deliver a more powerful product, but most importantly, provide a decent game library with titles from the past but also new exclusives. Well done Atari

  2.

    No prototype. ;)

Me too I believe that they do not have a working prototype, however this fact was also true 3 days ago and didn't stop them to email everyone and announce the campaign launch. How a company (even so "small" as Atari nowadays) can make such childish mistakes? You can't reach the launch day and at that exact date decide that you are not ready to do so! On the other side, it's Atari, everything is possible to happen...

  3. I am very intrigued to learn what was this "key element" that caused the delay literally the last minute before the campaign was to take off. Darn, I hate to say but once more atari has been proven completely unreliable

  4. Officially delayed:

    Launch Delay

The countdown to the Ataribox launch on Indiegogo has been officially paused. Because of one key element on our checklist, it is taking more time to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves. Building Ataribox is incredibly important to us and we will do whatever it takes to be sure it is worth the wait.

An updated launch plan is underway and more detailed information will be available soon.

We will be keeping you, our community, informed every step of the way. Thank you again for your support of Ataribox.

    -The Ataribox Team

  5. To put some french sauce in the taco recipe:

In other (english) words: We should not expect a campaign launch today because: "Les vérifications finales ont permis d'identifier des travaux complémentaires à réaliser pour lancer cette campagne et pour certains accessoires du produit" meaning: their final verifications have identified more work to be done for launching the campaign and for some of the console's accessories.

Come on Atari, just two days before they've sent the pre-Order Date Announcement email and now they have realized that they are not prepared to launch the campaign? Ohhhh so atarish!!!

I suppose I get your point, but I'm not sure what "exotic" thing you'd want and what difference it would make. There's no business advantage to going "exotic" anymore. In any case, we're not getting anything exotic with the Ataribox, so I guess the discussion is kind of moot anyway.

Yeap no point continuing on this, we all know that ataribox will be a pc based machine, I just expressed publicly my wish. I always admired game consoles from architecture perspective and seeing Atari going the x86 road is a bit disappointing for me.

As for exotic it doesnt need to be something overly expensive or complicated. Take as example the raspberry pi. Very very cheap, limitless capabilities, ARM architecture. Really innovative and massively accepted by the communities all over the world. It was exotic when it was first introduced, now it has set the standards and we all consider it common. Thats what I would like to see from Atari, affordable innovation.

I don't quite understand this, so maybe you can explain more. If all that really matters is the games, and, just to use the current PS4 and Xbox One console as examples since they definitely have tons of games, it begs the question who really cares what the technology that powers said game is?

All I really care about is do I have a wide variety of games to choose from? - check - and the best way to play them (4K HDR and surround sound)? - check -. Seems like a win to me. I don't need a potentially flawed original architecture (see, I don't know, something like the Jaguar) to feel good about my game console, particularly since it might make game creation more of a challenge.

It's my personal taste, not blaming or accusing anyone. Going the x86 road is the easy road according to my opinion. No inspiration to create something that stands out, something pioneering. Thanks I already have a PC I don't need another one in a fancy wooden box.

I prefer something more exotic, but I also expect from the company that produces it to be capable to support it both with first class titles and with 3rd party licensing/support. If it has crappy games it makes no difference if it is a x86 PC in disguise or a custom architecture beast.

Never gonna happen. It would cost too much to build custom hardware when instead you can do SoC + Emulation. And you'd need two classes of hardware in there, the old "complex" stuff. And the modern-day hardware for emulating everything else.

And you'd have have an infrastructure, whether turn-key, or grown over time. If turnkey, then there's going to be an outlay of hundreds of millions. And if it's homegrown and evolved over time, it'll never happen either because people want things instantly.

Back in the 1970's there was time and space for these things to develop and be funded over long periods. But not so today.

Well yeah that's my wishlist I know very well that it's not gonna happen. Requires a lot of RnD, something that Atari nowadays cannot afford.

However in my mind the unique hardware architecture is something that counts a lot and makes a system special. The other thing (which counts most) is of course the games library. That's why I dislike x86 modern consoles.

  9. My wishlist for Ataribox:

    Hardware side:

I would love some obscure hardware, with a complex architecture design like the old days, DSP, custom chips, 2-3 processors/co-processors, definitely with a cartridge port. Ethernet, usb, plenty of storage, proprietary expansion slot are also welcome. This way we will feel that we own a special system not a pc inside a(n) (atari)box with a logo on it.

    Software side:

Number one: Atari to provide a complete, well documented and easy to use SDK for developers.

Number two: Atari to sign with 3rd party software houses and have some exclusives with strong reference to the past e.g. a new shiny pitfall game.

Number three: Support indie developers to bring their titles to the console.

Number four: Old games via emulation, but not only from 2600 but also from other atari consoles (including the most contemporary lynx and jaguar).

  10. Mr McWill your project looks very promising, it's nice to have 3 options for VGA out. I, like most of us here would love to see a video of your mod running. In the 95 euro price do you include the LCD replacement screen or we have to buy it extra? If it is extra could you post more info about it? Thanks!

  11. Great great news! The Lynx community seems to be on fire!

MultiCart and TVOut are going to give a second life to our beloved little cat (still has 7 lives left ;) ). Nice work SainT keep it up!

  12. Hi! Great news, that's something everybody here waited for years! Could you post the wiring diagram just to have an idea of the mod's complexity? I have done a similar mod to my gamegear and I must confess it was very difficult for a non experienced modder mainly due to the tiny welding points on the PCB.

Thanks a lot for bringing this to the community!
