Lynx Badlands Racing (and a Super Off Road Gripe)
toughacton replied to Tempest's topic in Atari Lynx
Hmm I find the teleporting turbos to be essential. otherwise you cant pass a single car (you always manage to hit them) Maybe I'm just used to the style. I played the arcade a lot and it did pretty much the same thing as i remember. (although it was much smoother) My only gripe with SOR is that on certain tracks you wont get credited with completing a lap unless you do it "just right". -
Yes you can beat Rampage. Its one of the few I have. Although after you're done I believe it does start over again (with you still having whatever lives you had left). As for other stuff I've beat... not much. Paperboy, but not on the hardest level and I got to the last stage of Kung Food, but didnt beat it. I must be one of the few people that thought the game funny enough to play it to that point.

What do want under the Christmas tree/ Hannukak bush?
toughacton replied to bergbros's topic in Atari Lynx
Hmm lets see... 1)Dracula... Tried to get this off ebay and darn if I've been outbid at least 10 times... 2)All Songbird Releases. Want them so bad, but have been buying up the cheaper games I don't have yet. 3)All of those wonderful Independent releases Merry Christmas all! Hope you all get some of your wish lists! -
Yeah, I've often found myself plugging in shadow of the beast into my 400Watt stereo system and just letting the music play. Lets face it i got stuck so i rarely play it too much. However, this is tons of fun with lots of games. My favorite is Rampage. The effect of 2 - 12 inch subs makes it seem like the buildings really are coming down around you. Plus i love the title music.

Looking to start a Lynx collection...opinions wanted
toughacton replied to Adrian M's topic in Atari Lynx
I agree that the lynx 2 is a better choice. Its lighter, has a better battery life, is easier to hold, takes up slightly less space and has the backlight button(so you can pause and turn off just the screen to save batteries and not fry your screen) The only problem i've ever seen is that the lynx 2 has a worse history of breakdowns. Of course if you take care of it well you shouldn't have any problems. I bought mine new in 92 and it still works perfectly. So there you go. Oh and some good games to start with are california games, chips challenge, crystal mines 2, and rampart. -
I agree, there are quite a few decent ebay sellers. I've gotten most of my collection that way. Although sometimes you have to bite the bullet and buy a lot of a system and such to get one really rare game, but generally for 30 or 40 bucks more than the game is worth you get another lynx and usually a bunch of games. Oh yeah and watch out, its addictive Your money will just seem to disappear.

I'll put in my vote for Rampage. I've actually beaten the game (no easy feat I must say and it took forever) and its still loads of fun to play. Not to mention multiplayer is a blast. Close runners up are Shanghi and Lemmings
-
Yeah i agree. The $199 price tag is steep, but i'll probably lay down the money for it. I mean there'd be nothing cooler than to play xenophobe or warbirds on a big screen.

I've actually gotten most of my collection of Lynx games off ebay. You just have to check it fairly often. Also there is a company that lists games on there from time to time. go atari I believe is the name. I got a lot of harder to find games from them. But they dont always list on a regular basis. just fyi.

Shanghai: Can the puzzles always get solved ???
toughacton replied to Twoface2's topic in Atari Lynx
yeah I've always been able to find a solution. Granted, it might take me 20 tries sometimes, but there is always a way as far as I have found. -
Hmm, looks like I'll actually have to play this one. I tested it when i got it to make sure that it worked, but never really played it. Sounds like its worth playing.
-
yeah i agree, sometimes all it takes is getting it in the right position, My zarlor mecenaries cart is really touchy, i spend about 15 minutes everytime i want to play it, getting it to start. Then again, you may just have a bad cart. they can wear out, although ive never personally had it happen.

We'll i just keep all my boxes and only take out a few games at a time when i want to play them, but if you dont have the original boxes, or the space to store all the boxes, I've found that an index card box will work well if you have a ton, if you don't have that many, old cd cases or tape cases work. (you have to cut out the raised parts, but they do nicely, especially the tape cases)

Lynx games on ebay (Super Off Road, Euro Soccer,...)
toughacton replied to Hyxtryx's topic in Atari Lynx
cool, ill have to keep an eye on that. I would really like to have 2 copies of super off road! -
interesting. I wasnt aware that the lynx was marketed there at all. neat.
-
well ive certainly not seen or heard about it before. i even own 2 copies of the game. i dont even think its pictured in the cartridge scans on this site. so you might send a pic of it in as a new cartridge type. did it come with a box/instructions? and are they the same or different?
-
i agree. The cotrols did take some getting used to, but a great game overall!

or you could just get an atari brand lynx ac adapter from auction too. They are pretty cheap and are going to work for you for sure. Personally, i haven't had much luck with the universal adapters, but thats been quite a while ago so they are probably much more likely to work. just make sure all the settings are right. you dont want to fry your lynx!

Just a note from experience, the lynx 1 seems to have less issues than the lynx II. There seem to be quite a few people out there who have had issues with their lynx II systems. just check some earlier posts on this board. However, I have had my lynx II since it came out and it still works perfectly *knocks on wood a bunch* So it can go either way. and the added battery life and lighter weight are big pros in my book

Alrighty, here's another review for a hard to get ahold game. Super Off Road Ok this is one of my favorite arcade games, and i still love the genre. Its an overhead racing game where you get money for winning and buy better parts for your car and nitros and keep trying to do better and beat your 3 opponents. Graphics: The graphics are actually really well done in this game. Although that could be said for most late release games in comparison to the earlier titles. The cars are a bit small though. I know this really can't be helped, but it still takes away just a little. Overall an 8 here. Sound: Not that bad really, I can't remember what the sound was like on any other platform, but at least I didn't find myself annoyed after 10 minutes. Overall a 6.5 Gameplay: This was a really cool game in the arcade and seems to lose something in the controls on the lynx. I think a joystick would really improve the game. Although i did notice that once you buy all your equipment the handling does actually seem to improve. Overall a 4 at first, but once you get used to it. a 5 or 6. Although this may be a turn off to some people when you find out you cant win the first several races simply because you cant turn well no matter what you do. Also another complaint is that on certain tracks, the game is really picky on which route you take along the track. If you do something just a little off, the lap doesnt count. Let me tell you this has frustrated me to no end sometimes. Overall: Ok aside from the controls, this is still a really great and fun game that you can play for hours on end. I've yet to play it mulitplayer with anyone, but this could only make the game 10 times more fun. For some reason seeing 2 people drive around crazy like in a game always makes me laugh I think a 7 is a fair rating of the game. There is a lot of room for replay and i really think if i can ever afford to get another copy, the multiplayer will be awesome.

Hey I'm new here, but I've been collecting for quite a while and thought I would give a review of one of my rarer games. Raiden This is a hard to find game and when you do find it, it doesnt come cheap. (I spent 45 bucks on it) However, When i got this game i was quite blown away by the stunning graphics. I thought i was playing my super nintendo for a while. Its exactly like the arcade if you've played it. There isnt any background music, only a title track. I was slightly disappointed in that, but the sound effects are well done. My one complaint about the game is its immense difficulty and lack of a password system. Once you die you have to play through it all again. Now i don't mind a challenge, but this is really tough, so be prepared. Also be forewarned that you actually play the game with your Lynx vertical. Its really weird to get used to. I tried playing it horizontally, but it made it more difficult, at least for me. Overall i rate the game a 7 out of 10. The graphics are great and its very true to the original. Worth the money in my opinion. ~toughacton
