Brick wall,  my friend!" I schmoozed...

"Whaddya want?"  Said this (oddly) talking brick wall.

    "Whoa!  You can Talk!"

"Ummm I mean,  I was hoping to convince you to play some video games!"

"Yup!   OK"  He said and asked about Space Invaders...He looked right at my avatar,  and well,  This brick wall wanted to play arcade Space Invaders!

Just don’t suggest Breakout. Walls tend to think it is culturally insensitive.

  2. The Intellivision games don’t come on any Atari branded flashback system. There does exist Custom FirmWare (CFW) that allows additional emulators to be installed on the devices.

You can then find the Atari Nexus collection on Archive.Org (the thread below has a link to a minimal Nexus archive with just the emulators). I think the lack of buttons on the Atari Flashbacks make them a worse option for emulating Intellivision, the Legends Flashbacks with 6-buttons are better.

there was a dedicated Intellivision Flashback with appropriate controllers and keypad overlays. They come up for sale periodically on ShopGoodwill.com for $20-$40 every month or so.

  3. @Giles N, why have the protagonist in Thomas Was Alone be a box? Why have Danny Wallace narrate the game? (Or if a sequel is made narrate it)

You don't need to use a square for Adventure Reloaded, nor do you need to have the dragons look like ducks, nor have different color castles with keys to unlock them. At some point though, it won’t be instantly recognizable as an Adventure game. And once it no longer recognizable as Adventure, why call it that?

Why should better graphics have mske for overtly complex gameplay?

You could take Tetris, and make every brick-thing shine and sparkle in 4D on a 8K TV, without changing the gameplay … at all.

At some point you change the essence of what the game is. It’s like with movie sequels, most the time they just release the same movie again with the same beats. (Ie The Force Awakens is just a rerelease of A New Hope, Jurassic Park 2, 3, World, …, Home Alone 2), other times the sequel is very different (Bill & Ted Bogus Journey, Aliens, Indiana Jones: ToD).  With games, if you change too much it won’t feel like the same genre (LoZ: Links Adventure,  SMB 2, GTA III).

    Galahad: Adventure-like

    Adventure II

    5078088-adventure-ii-atari-5200-ahh-the-

While I don’t think the graphics have to be low-fi, some things would have to be in Adventure Reloaded for it to feel like a game sequel and things that couldn’t be in it.

If the interface becomes text descriptions and a text parser or a verb noun PnC adventure game it will be too much like Zork / Mystery House / Shadowgate / Kings Quest (noting Adventure is an action game). So all the puzzles will likely be of the pickup object X, bring it to Y screen to get past obstacle Z.

    It will need to have

    • Square / Cube protagonist.
    • Duck Dragons
    • Castles with colored keys
    • Minimal or limited inventory

With regard to the minimal inventory, perhaps a two-slot system that would allow using, dropping, combining a left/right item to solve puzzles.

  6. @Flyindrew unfortunately this is due to the various online storefronts. If you buy a game on iOS, Apple gets their 30%. If you buy it from the Google play store, Google gets its 30%, from Microsoft then they get their 30%.

Unfortunate, but what can you do?

Perhaps users had been reporting his posts as well, calling attention to the situation and making it seem such action would be the greater good.

Ideas are basically worthless. It is extremely difficult to release any finished game, as the last 20% encompasses 80% of the work.

Idea guys imagine their game at the finish line, but don’t do any of the work to get it there. So they don’t realize that their amazing game is one of a billion, which cannot make it past the great many filters. (Maybe only 1% of games released are profitable, only 1% of demos get release candidates, only 1% of games go from proof of concept to demo, only 1% go from … )

    17 U.S. Code § 117 - Limitations on exclusive rights: Computer programs

    Quote

(a)Making of Additional Copy or Adaptation by Owner of Copy.—Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided:

    (1)
that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine and that it is used in no other manner, or
    (2)
that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful.

117(a)(1) qualifies you to make a copy to use with an emulator.

for additional background you could read Krause v. Titleserv, Inc., or Aymes v. Bonelli.

  9. Congratulations to ZilchSr.

    Favorite:

Amoeba Jump - One of the best new homebrews to be released in last couple of years. Has that just-one-more-game vibe, and when you die it’s likely your fault and not the controls.

Lucky Chase - Used to play a lot of Lock’n Chase (M-Network), and this homebrew is a very good rendition of the game.

    Surprising:

Stay Frosty 2 - Didn’t play nearly enough games of this one. Need to put more time in so I can see all the boards.

Elevators Amiss - reminiscent of the Elevator Repairman game for the a800, this was a fun title that I was previously unaware of.

    Worst:

Defender - I detest weeks where I have already rolled a score on title, but need to replicate it because there are so many good players (inevitable with the caliber of HSC players). This isn’t the worst of the bunch (Laser Blast is a worse slog I’m sure, but I haven’t ever attempted it), with only games that require not playing them the intended way to get a high score (Ie Cosmic Ark, where it is better to milk points continuously on the early L2-L4)

Lost Luggage - Losing a life feels very random. At least it doesn’t last long.

Thanks to @Vocelli for running the HSC. Looking forward to next season with Bonuses for players whose first derivative of rate of increase in high score posts is greater than one standard deviation of the average players score for the week.

  10. If things haven't changed much from 8 years ago, the forum preferences would be Heavy 6er (35%), Light 6er (20%), Vader (15%), 4 Switch Woodgrain / Sears Telegames / Jr.(~10% each)

I owned a Telegames 6 Switch, and a Vader, both won in a raffle. Still have them today, but only after cleaning out my parents old house, i had to rebuy 2 from ShopGoodwill (first one was defective), so i now own 4 models. I think I prefer the look of the 6-switcher, and I think I remember the buttons on the heavy were better. But, mostly I play my Atari Flashback X, so I guess I prefer it.
