I guess someone caused a short circuit to the LYNX when this mod kits was installed. Perhaps the 5-Volt mod wasn't done. So a faulty diode damaged the LYNX mod kit.
The main IC was broken, not the voltage regulator or something else.
This board needs to be repaired with a new programmed main IC.

It seems the color palette is not correct. Perhaps there's a short circuit at the old LCD ribbon pads D0-D3 or some of them are mixed up.
Please check these wires again.

Greetings!
Several years ago I purchased the McWill LCD Lynx mod, intending to install it in one of my Lynx II systems. I still have not done that, and in the interest of finally getting it done and not screwing it up, I'd like to pay someone else to install the mod for me. Here's the poor, sad LCD mod, still in its original shipping box:
If you have experience installing the McWill LCD mod in Lynx II systems and would like to be paid to do the modification for me, please send me a private message! Would be great to have at least one Lynx with a good looking screen. I did purchase the VGA output option as well and would definitely want that installed so I can direct output to an external screen.
Thank you,
..Al
Hi Al,
you can ask @cowdog360 for example. He's also in the US. I also sent a PM of another person doing perfect installations in the US ?
Cheers,Marco

Hello McWill,
I have exactly the same issue, I bought a Lynx II screen and as my Lynx II didn't manage to get the proper voltage for the screen, I decided to put it in my Lynx I... Now I also have an upside down image. And I just found out your answer... too late I guess !
Is it possible to make our screen work without having to reinstall it upside down ?
Thanks for your precious help !
The LYNX-I mod kits are only for the LYNX-I and the LYNX-II mod kits are only for the LYNX-II ? You can see white stickers on the PCB and LCD ribbon of the LYNX-I mod kit. Otherwise it is a LYNX-II mod kit!

I installed a new screen to my Lynx I with a C104193-001 rev.B board. Check all the wiring and seems to be fine, but i got a static screen and you can here the game playing
(not my actual image, just an example)
Strangly enough i found a topic that had to do with the TPR bridge on the MCWill board and soldered the bridge. The screen turn on fine and seems to be working. But... the picture is upsidedown.... ?Does anybody got a clue what went wrong?
Please check if you've installed a LYNX-I mod kit! I guess you used a LYNX-II mod kit. The firmware is different ?

I have already heard from others in the modding community that have ordered the Aliexpress kit and stated that it is the exact same screen as apparently the LCD itself is a pretty common type. They used the same instructions to install the Ali kit as the normal kit and it does work in the exact same fashion. However, they did state that there is some strange buzzing from the audio after installing one of these kits so it would seem there is a ground loop or something the clone kit introduces.
Yes it is very disappointing to see this but again, it isn't surprising either as many of these types of things over the past few years have been getting cloned like this. The GDEMU is another and in the case of that device, the clones have become more popular than the originals.
You stated the kit is based off your old GG design PCB? I must have the older version then since I looked and even with the pics of your GG board on console5.com, the clone seems to mirror it? If you have a newer version of the GG PCB what is the main difference with the newer PCB?
The main difference is the McWill LCD TM Logo and some optimized solder points.
The quality is the same as before ? (as expected from McWill).
So you can see the clone has bad quality regarding the audio buzzing. As mentioned before some people also said the clone isn't working. The reason could be that theses clones never were tested before shipping, because they have not the knowledge for this. The chinese just cloned it, sell bad quality and have no idea for testing things.
After import taxes and shipping cost the clone would be more expensive than my original. And a faulty clone could also be happen.

I've seen it also on Aliexpress and EBAY. I was able to stop the sales on EBAY, because they hurt my copyrights. It seems it is a McWill mod, but IT ISN'T! The PCB design is my previous design.
I also tried to stop the sales on Aliexpress, but it's not as easy as on EBAY.
The most important thing: They don't use high quality parts and I got some questions of "customers" that it don't work perfectly. That's true, beause it's NOT my mod kit! I also guess they have pixel issues, but who knows...
It's incredible that people in China clone everything and sell it as "Original 100% brand"!

lol I didn't want to bother him but will give it a shot thank you for you help and input
No problem

There's a short circuit at one of the pads of D0-D3 or they are mixed up. Please check again and it will work without issues

Cheers,
Marco

I saw that post before, but it's for a Lynx II. I have the Lynx I, but would the components that need to be removed the same for both?
For LYNX-I also look here:
It's in german, but Google Translate will help you

-
That's crazy! I can see why you would put that in the instructions. In terms of voltage I am getting the required 5V. Are there specific instructions for doing the 5V mod to the Lynx I and are there any negatives to doing it?
Look here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/238692-how-to-installing-5v-regulator-mod-in-an-atari-lynx-ii/

Thank you

I would do the 5-Volt mod, but it's up to you. I had a working LYNX-II for testing my LCD mod kits and it was working fine. But after thousands of times switching it on and off, the zener diode got broken and my LYNX and the tested mod kit were "fried" (because the complete voltage of the power supply went through the LYNX - about 9-15V!)-

Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded my Lynx I with a McWill LCD. Everything works great, but today I was playing and then the music from the game stopped, and the screen got fuzzy. The batteries got hot, so I immediately removed them. I tried a different set of batteries and everything seems fine. I checked the voltage when I did the upgrade and my Lynx was at 5.01v, so I did not replace the MOSFET. Could this be why the batteries got hot (aside from use)?
I would recommend to install the 5-Volt mod (RECOM DC/DC) to prevent any damages caused by a faulty zener diode. The original power circuit is a ticking time bomb. Also if the zener diode is new.

No, but if you can switch between normal mode and scanline mode, you have the latest firmware.
-
This could be very excited

BTW my production for the GBC mod kit is already running. I presented the prototype in November 2018 on the Ejagfest in Germany.
The final version has 32K colors and would be almost plug and play. Just 1 wire has to be soldered.
You also can install a VGA connector, if you want.
The case can be closed with the existing screws.

With the thumbwheel you can switch between VGA and internal 3.5" LCD on the GG. You don't need to wire VCC and GND to the thumbwheel, if you don't use VGA out.

Found it!! Cancel the above question:
Now....Where can I find the latest firmware?
For the latest firmware you have to send it to my address and I will do the firmware update. Then please send PM
-
I have seen you used the wrong pin at the 74HC74 (the blue backlight wire). Please change and I guess it will working correctly. Thanks I will try that. Where is that part located on the motherboard? Is it a part still in production or will I have to get it from an old Lynx II?

Yes I noticed that too, and it wasn't the case before.
It was the case since the 1st batch, because the LCD is a little bit smaller than the original one.
So you can see some of the silver LCD housing, sometimes only on the left or on both sides a little bit. I would also suggest to use a black marker.
I've just about finished my installation now but I've encountered a strange issue. I'm unable to to switch between all the display modes properly. I can switch between the Lynx screen and my VGA monitor but it will not display the retro mode with scanlines on either screen. I noticed that when I press and hold the backlight button on the Lynx it will show scanlines but as soon as a release pressure on the button it presumably switches to the next mode and I am unable to see them.
Anybody encountered this issue before? I have a feeling that the mod is working perfectly and it's my Lynx that has a dodgy button or something.
I guess the old backlight ON/OFF circuit is faulty. Try to exchange the 74HC74.
The LCD mod only gets the info ON/OFF from this circuit, so the LCD mod can't be faulty.

T10 to VCC you say??? Ill have a look...
By VCC you mean 5v?
Is this where T10 connects to the lower side of R23?
Yes, VCC is 5V (the lower side of R23). Then it will work

-
Anyone ever struck this using a Gear Master on a single ASIC Game Gear?
Its a McWill screen in there, does it with every cart ive tried.
You forgot the wire from T10 to VCC. Because it's a SMS game, the pixels will be displayed in another way then.
-
McWill are the majesco game gears still not officially supported at this time? The last comment I saw was that a firmware update was needed but that was at least a year or 2 ago.
The Majesco GGs are a bit complicated and complete different to the GG VA0 and VA1.
But I will find a solution and let you know then, if the new firmware is available.

Is there a Lynx I version in stock?
I would like to get one in time for eJagfest if possible. My white Lynx is my main development tool and I don't feel good about dragging it with me on a road trip. On the other hand I would like to connect live to a VGA projector.
Yes, the LYNX-I mod kits (also the GG and LYNX-II mod kits) are available

I'm also on the Ejagfest on 3rd and 4th November.

I do have that controller in at least one of them, do you know what i need to do to feed it RGB? If so ill make it happen!
I have a Nomad set aside here unmodded that is awaiting your screen, that is the best of my collection ( i have 4 Nomads ) and ive got 2 allready modded ( one came that way, the other i did myself with the cheaper screen and composite ) one i want to try this 640x480 screen with RGB.
Ive you can point me on how to do it ill go RGB on the two composites.
No, sorry. The datasheet of the MST703 has several hundreds of pages for different settings. And it wouldn't become pixel exact then.
-
Yeah i know about the analog bit, and no doubt your solutions are WAY better, theyre awesome, but i cant get RGB out of those $20 LCDs that i know of!
Is there a way to feed RGB into them? I have other plans for them as well as the Nomad

Thank you.
If you have a 20 USD PCB with MST703 controller it would be possible

Yes, you need a wire to pad4 of the LYNX mod kit. Then you can switch between Scanlines on and off.
