The original Zelda is just the right length, has just the right challenge, and just the right mechanics. And like Reaperman said, you don't make waves by taking an existing game and marginally improving on it (re: Neutopia on the Turbo Grafx).

GAW is th better game in every aspect, so much is true. I am also partial to it since I am a Sega guy. But it was released in 1991 or 1992, about 5 years after Zelda 1. It would have been embarassing NOT to be better than the very basic first Zelda by then. Zelda III was out already. Master of Darkness is also better than Castlevania, but when you consider Castlevania IV was out by then it is obviojs why it got little attention. Because Publix has a great variety of organic products, grass fed beef, etc. They have some options for quality food. Walmart does not, and there's not Kroger here to compare.
