Confirmed: SAMS jumper is/was set to EXT
-
They do. This is the first “issue” I’ve ever had with legacy software on my systems.
-
Both SAMS and TIPI have their own power supply. Also, I’ve now recreated this anomaly on three different TIs. Two with F18a, and one without. The common theme seems to be SAMS.

I just ordered this video chess XB auto load floppy from Buddybear on eBay. I’ll be trying it in my PEB system (Corcomp DSDD, SAMS, TIPI, F18a). Curious to see if I experience the same issues. Will report back.
-
Update: On original system, I unplugged the SAMS and TIPI and just tested with the F18A: Results: 1. Original cart: same issue. 2. Finalgrom: played fine. Then I hooked up an unexpanded system with RCA/VGA converter. Results: 1. Original cart: same issue. 2. Finalgrom: played fine. *At this point, I figure the original cart is bad. Then I added the SAMS/TIPI to the non-F18A system. Results: 1. Finalgrom: corrupted video after game started. So, now I'm very confused....I think I'll just not play video chess

Thanks for offering that datapoint, R. Bill. I thought I was going crazy….

Update: I cleaned both the console cartridge port and the cartridge contacts very thoroughly. I deleted my Finalgrom "Games" folder and reloaded a fresh copy from the WHTECH site. Here are the results with both the original cartridge and the Finalgrom: Video Chess Cart.mov Finalgrom.mov If the videos do not play, the point is they both did the same thing as before: after opening animation, the screen went haywire. I find this so strange, because everything else I do on my TIs seems to work fine. If this isn't the F18A, SAMS or TIPI, I assume it is VRAM. Could someone please give me some noob instruction on how to conduct and interpret a memory test for console ram? Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Yes, on one machine I have sidecar SAMS, on the other the PEB SAMS. Both have F18a. I’ll do a fresh download for Finalgrom.
-
Update: I tried both the physical cartridge and the Finalgrom in my other system. It is pristine, mostly NOS, so no dirty contacts. Same issues. I’m thinking this has something to do with either SAMS or F18a. Anybody with that setup able to recreate the crashes after first move by White?
-
I'll definitely try cleaning everything when I have some time in a couple weeks. Thanks for the suggestions!

So I picked up a physical copy of Video Chess and went to play a game and after the intro sequence, the code immediately corrupted. So I fired up the FinalGrom version of the game and the exact same thing happened. Was this a "legacy" issue, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

What is the Holy Grail of the TI99 4/A World?

For me: The cup that Jesus drank from when he programmed on the TI-99/4a. -
Love TI Gameshelf. Thank you, Vorticon!!

The F18a DIY alternative with HDMI :)

99ers are a very active group on Atariage. I’d be willing to bet anyone with the time/skill/ambition to launch a Go Fund Me for 50 boards at $50 ($15 materials, $35 time) would reach the $2,500 goal quickly. -
This doesn't answer your question, but just a plug for this list (shared by @atrax27407) in another forum could be a useful reference to be added to the Development sticky and updated as other CALL LOADs are defined. CALL LOADS.pdf

When I was into collecting carts in the early 2000's, I always thought either "Germ Patrol" or "Robotron 2084" were considered holy grails. I think both were prototypes only (could be wrong)

This is an older post, but has a link to a zip file a few posts down. Might be able to make "copies" while your hunt for physical copies continues.

Haha, I have to get it working first!! First time I ever tried to DIM an array in a Subprogram.

This is the v2.0 code I wanted to submit but couldn't debug in time. I was trying to get to an advantageous defensive position and execute a preprogrammed pattern. I'm sharing because the commented out screen data at the bottom could help someone down the road. TANK2 v2.0.txt

Thank you for hosting, Vorticon. Much appreciated!

I’m looking to purchase a Statistics cartridge w/ manual and a Securities Analysis cartridge w/ manual. If anyone is interested to sell, please PM me with offer. Thanks!

I’ve got a feeling that @Tursi will be commanding a Leopard II fresh off the assembly line. My 1955 T-62 with a turret so rusty, it barely turns, will need some luck!

While the games themselves are common, I can’t recall ever seeing this binder before. https://www.ebay.com/itm/295564773348?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=s3yougf-ROS&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=QfU6nnIiRby&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
