sounds like a weak power supply. Are you trying to run the sams/tipi off the console supply at all?

Both SAMS and TIPI have their own power supply.  Also, I’ve now recreated this anomaly on three different TIs.  Two with F18a, and one without.  The common theme seems to be SAMS.

Another datapoint: I have Video Chess as it was supplied on the FG99 and Video Chess on disk*, which wants to be loaded via Extended Basic.

The FG99 copy plays the opening animation but then goes to a blank screen and nothing further (no VDP fireworks).

The disk version loads and runs fine. (It plays an interesting trick: I start XB, XB autoloads Video Chess, then returns to the cartridge menu, where Video Chess appears along with TI Basic and Extended Basic as though the cartridge is inserted.

I have an F18a and my console is equipped with 32K 16-bit RAM. The disk version must be loading into that RAM, so that doesn't appear to be a problem.

I just ordered this video chess XB auto load floppy from Buddybear on eBay.  I’ll be trying it in my PEB system (Corcomp DSDD, SAMS, TIPI, F18a).  Curious to see if I experience the same issues.  Will report back.

  3. Update:

On original system, I unplugged the SAMS and TIPI and just tested with the F18A:

Results:  1. Original cart:  same issue.  2. Finalgrom:  played fine.

Then I hooked up an unexpanded system with RCA/VGA converter.

Results:  1. Original cart:  same issue.  2. Finalgrom:   played fine.

*At this point, I figure the original cart is bad.

Then I added the SAMS/TIPI to the non-F18A system.

Results:  1. Finalgrom:  corrupted video after game started.

So, now I'm very confused....I think I'll just not play video chess :)

  4. Update:  I cleaned both the console cartridge port and the cartridge contacts very thoroughly.  I deleted my Finalgrom "Games" folder and reloaded a fresh copy from the WHTECH site.  Here are the results with both the original cartridge and the Finalgrom:

If the videos do not play, the point is they both did the same thing as before:  after opening animation, the screen went haywire.  I find this so strange, because everything else I do on my TIs seems to work fine.

If this isn't the F18A, SAMS or TIPI, I assume it is VRAM.  Could someone please give me some noob instruction on how to conduct and interpret a memory test for console ram?  Thanks!

  5. Update:  I tried both the physical cartridge and the Finalgrom in my other system.  It is pristine, mostly NOS, so no dirty contacts.  Same issues.  I’m thinking this has something to do with either SAMS or F18a.  Anybody with that setup able to recreate the crashes after first move by White?

  6. So I picked up a physical copy of Video Chess and went to play a game and after the intro sequence, the code immediately corrupted.   So I fired up the FinalGrom version of the game and the exact same thing happened.  Was this a "legacy" issue, or am I doing something wrong?

Hi. Can anyone tell me what these statements do? I suspect that they relocate the start of an XB program in memory but I'm not certain...

    CALL LOAD(-31890,56,24)::CALL LOAD(-31964,56,24)

This doesn't answer your question, but just a plug for this list (shared by @atrax27407) in another forum could be a useful reference to be added to the Development sticky and updated as other CALL LOADs are defined.

What's the most expensive cartridge out there and why is it so expensive or collectible?

When I was into collecting carts in the early 2000's, I always thought either "Germ Patrol" or "Robotron 2084" were considered holy grails.  I think both were prototypes only (could be wrong)

Since you have all the competing program listings, you can actually test out your code against them. Just replace the TANK1 SUB with yours and replace TANK2 with your opponent :)

Haha, I have to get it working first!!  First time I ever tried to DIM an array in a Subprogram.
