  1. I guess thats the only other thing - it could be my null modem cable.

    Have attached some piccies.

Echoed out using picocom on ubuntu

So I know it "can" work.

For the TI, have now tried 3 different serial->usb convertors (left of piccie)

The middle one has FTDI. The top one is the one I use with the Tandy.

Nothing appearing in Ubuntu. Tested with all 3 serial->usb converters.

Will keep on playing, will try another null modem cable. Or maybe a proper serial device on an old PC.

    cheers

  2. Woo! Tried my DSK on js99 & got the same error. So loaded the files back onto it this time in v9t9 format. Worked on js99. Then copied back onto CF card (all the time using xdt tools) and success! Loaded great. Thanks InsaneMultiTasker & everyone else.

Unfortunately it looks like I may have a faulty serial port on my nanoPeb. Still can't get an echo happening in Terminal mode from the TI to Linux using picocom. Will keep a lazy eye on a new nanoPeb.

    Cheers everyone.

  3.

At the risk of suggesting the obvious, has the volume loaded on the nanoPEB with the MX74 files been mounted as DSK1?

    ...lee

Yeah I did a CALL MOUNT etc etc - actually I normally have the nanoPEB CATALOG stuff on DSK1, but I made the effort to move that stuff to DSK2 & made my DSK with the Mass Xfer stuff in DSK1 just in case- and I did run the CATALOG from DSK2 too see if the right disk was in DSK1.

I'II repeat what I did & just make sure, because I was in a hurry.

  4. You got it. :) Hopefully it will work; I really hate not being able to test things up front!

Gave it a go last night (after remembering how to add DSK's to the CF card for the nanoPEB!).

Going through the Run Program File, DSK1.MX74 etc etc didn't load and gave me an error 7.

Will try again in the weekend making sure I have the right files on my CF Card, 'cos it seemed to work on classic99 doing the same exact thing.

    Will let you know!

  5. If anyone has one of the joyprint interfaces they want too part with, let me now.

Am gonna try & learn enough electronics to breadboard one up given the instructions on the mainbyte website (got myself a breadboard intro kit from an electronics store with 24 projects - hopefully after doing a couple of those I'II have some idea).

    cheers

  6. I modified Mass Transfer (40 columns) to work with the nano. I didn't retrofit it with my high-speed routines, so the best speed is 2400 with dropped characters at 4800. I uploaded it to Heatwave for test purposes. Since I am still waiting for the power cord for my nano, I could only verify the program operates with a standard TI.

    Hi InsaneMultitasker

I think I've grabbed the right disk off Heatwave. The file was called '@MT74NANO' which is a DSK that contains these 3 files:

    • MX74
    • MX75
    • MX76

Looks like I can load 'MX74' from the Editor/Assembler cart using "RUN PROGRAM FILE".

    Sounds about right?

    cheers

  7. Here is a New Zealand computer mag that reviewed the TI-99/4a in Feb 84. Some distributer must have got hold of a shipment of PAL machines suitable for the NZ market once TI had exited the market

Unfortunately was not a glowing review! :(

Interesting seeing the price points - reckon the TI might have been a bit overpriced (given computers in general here were VERY expensive)

    TI-99/4a $NZ595

    C64 $NZ995
    VIC20 $NZ495
    ZX SPECTRUM 16K $NZ425
    ZX SPECTRUM 48K $NZ525
    Sega SC3000 $NZ399
    cheers

  8. Was looking through some old 99'er mags, and found a TI-BASIC/Mini Memory listing called "Lightrace" (99ner8309.pdf). It was a game showing what you could do with POKEV/PEEKV calls etc.

Anyway, started typing it in using an emulator (js99er). Remembering to be careful, would save to a DSK etc. Got to a point that was gonna stop and finish the next day. Wasn't thinking, and forgot to download a copy of the DSK I was writing too. Refreshed browser. Boom. Saved file gone.

Definitely not a critiscm - was my fault.

Afterwards I thought it was hilarious! Brought back so many memories as a kid spending hours typing in a program, only for it somehow to go tits up. Either could not save it too cassette, someone accidently turns power off etc etc.

Next morning I vaguely remembered I might have seen the game on an old DSK i had - sure enough it was there! See attached file of mini mem programs

MMLIGHTRCR- A TI BASIC game program from 99'er Magazine that requires the Mini Memory to run. All you need to do is insert the MM cartridge, load the program into TI BASIC then type RUN.

    cheers

  9. Still no go with picocom on ubuntu. Worked great with the Tandy 102. Still nothing from TI, TEII & nanopeb

Hopefully get some time with InsaneMultitaskers work this weekend.

Am wondering if I'm not supplying enough juice to the Nanopeb to drive the RS232 port? Seems weird I get nothing from it (unless its faulty)

  10. I modified Mass Transfer (40 columns) to work with the nano. I didn't retrofit it with my high-speed routines, so the best speed is 2400 with dropped characters at 4800. Nice! Will do some research on how to access heatwave

  11. What term emu are you using on your PC? I recently learned about picocom and found it quite useful (using it elsewhere, not in the TI context).

I'II give picocom a go! thats looks good!

Was actually just using screen initially, it does a real basic terminal. I used to use getty with red hat/centos, but looked a pain in the butt to get up and running with ubuntu - picocom looks good.

  12.

Hey Greg - you have a Tandy 100/102 huh? If so, see if you can get at least some terminal echo happening? I tried again last night with TE II setting 7 bit even parity at 300 baud - still not happy with my null modem cable I use everywhere and another straight through cable I have.

I'II try getting the TI connected to my PC, might show issues with my nanoPEB.

Interesting - wasn't able to get my PC (ubuntu) using terminal echo at 300 baud using TE II & null modem cable communicating at all.

So installed a Terminal Serial Emulator on my android phone. Works great with Tandy. Still nothing with the TI, TE II and Nanopeb.

Will see if any updated terminal software for the TI fixes things.
