  1. Here are some pictures I took of Chuck's Tutorvision that was on display at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee yesterday. It was set up in its display case with a powered ventilation fan and the Map Mazes game booted up from an LTO Flash.

The lighting in that area of the room was tough, but the camera did a respectable job of compensating. These photos are not adjusted in any way, but I did reduce their size to post here.

Sadly, I couldn't get a hands-on demonstration, as Chuck wasn't around to give a tour and both controllers were inside the case. But it was still cool to see.

Nice photos. I should have left a note with my number on it so you could text me. It was a huge show, my wife and I were there someplace. A couple of my museum friends did tell me that someone was looking for me. We tried to hang around the museum in case you returned.

  2. Anyone wanna guinea pig something for me? Especially *cough* Lathe *cough* as I'm curious what his system says with this ROM. I whipped up something that in theory tests all of the various chips that make a Tutorvision (or a TutorPro). I can't actually test for Lathe's system (it has the motherboard but not the EXEC, which can't currently be tested in an emulator) so I'm really interested if I got this right.

This'll also detect anyone with a SuperPro or INTV III, that has the INTV 2. At least I think so. Those are out there, so it's worth knowing in case you want to play Donkey Kong and just can't.

If someone could try this on a full-blown Tutorvision that'd be swell!

I tried it on my TutorVision and it did nothing but display a solid green screen. Hit reset , same result.

  3. Neat icon_mrgreen.gif It means you have the Tutorvision GROM. Next step is to try to play Worm Whomper on it. Apparently the worms won't look right, if you have the full board.

Also weren't the Tutorvision ROMs released on one of these threads? Couldn't a person just put them on an LTO Flash! and see what happens?

Brilliant idea, I did release the roms of the two games I have.

  4. I and David Harley dumped the roms of 3 tutorvision games:

    - Geo Graphics

    - Map Mazes

    - Shapes In Space

We could produce these games with box, manual and all, BUT they would work only on tutorvision consoles and on some (not all) of Super Pro System consoles.

So, they would be mainly pieces for collectors (but could be played on emulator on pc).

If we do it, anyone would buy them?

    Thanks:)

    Alessandro

Alessandro, I dumped two of those using David Harley's dumper. Map Mazes and Shapes in Space were mine, where did the third game come from?

  5. I don't think he would want to sell it anytime soon. He brings it every year to display at mgc and I think he really enjoys doing so.

Can you believe he got it for $5

I do enjoy bringing it and so does my wife. The MGC is a blast I'd hate to miss it, this year (2017) we will be bringing the TutorVision, a regular Intellivision and a Vectrex. We may bring an Atari 800 XL if space permits.

Oh and I promised Alessandro Pace first crack at it when and if I do sell it.

  6. The wbexec could be different but it doesn't have to be. The Revised Exec for Tutorvision and the narrow font routines could be put on each cartridge.

The boards look different but the components are the same as a regular intellivision. You can see it has a full 2KB of gram, 2609s had 512B and IIs had 1KB. The Intellivision memory map always supported 2KB gram but Intellivisions were wired to ignore more than 512B. A regular Intellivision could only buffer 25% of the screen. From Tutorvision screenshots it would need at least 50%. 2KB gram is enough to buffer the entire screen.

Modifying an Intellivision emulator to support Tutorvision should be a matter of increasing addressable gram. Jzintv source code is there for anyone.

If Tutorvision cartridges don't start in an Intellivision II it could be because of a possible revised exec rom. Or it could be because the cartridge checks for extra gram (otherwise text would be garbled). Or it could be because it fails the intellivision II Mattel lockout.

    Edit:

How many regular Intellivision cartridges were tested? Its possible some might have messed up graphics on a Tutorvision but they all should run. Does the standard font look normal with regular Intellivision games on a Tutorvision?

Since I acquired the TutorVision I have amassed a decent number of Intellivision games and they all look fine on the TutorVision. I also have a couple of orginal Intellivision Master Components and the TutorVision games just present a black screen on those.

  7. Chuck,

Nice find! I wish I was that fortunate with garage sales and/or estate sales. The best I came across so far was a Tomy Tutor unit (which I passed on).

Do you have any video or pictures of either of the games? I'm sure the rest of the group would be interested. Also, out of curiosity, have you tried playing any Intellivision games on it as well?

I do have old pictures of screenshots I will round some up. It does play any regular Intellivision game as well. Including coleco and activision games. The only difference is a half height proportional font that the edugames can use.
  8. Thanks for the post! Love the opportunity to see it (even if it is only secondhand). Very cool of the owner to display it at the show and allow access to it. Something that rare, I'm not sure I would be as cool. :P

Atari_Bill, The room we were in had a lot of rare items. The only Intellivision besides mine had the piano keyboard, which was pretty cool.

I was lusting after an Atari Video Music and The only Atari Game Brain I have ever seen.

  9. Update -

Fry's also has a $3.99 PS/2 female to male usb adapter that should allow a mouse with a PS/2 connector to work with the Irish adapter. I haven't tested this though.

I tested it with an HP optical mouse that had a PS/2 plug on the end of the cord, I plugged it in to the Fry's adapter and it worked fine with the Ebay adapter

  10. I now this is an old thread but it may be still of interest. I just received one of the "Irish" adapters from Ebay. I tried every mouse I had stashed away and none of them worked. I saw in a post from crash that the Logitech M110 optical mouse would work. I went to Fry's Electronics and they had the white version in stock for only $9.99. I picked one up and low and behold it works great!

  11. It does write the backups in an unprotected format, you can copy them with a sector copier. They still won't run without the Impossible board. The Impossible does plug into the socket that the OS chip was in. Of course all markings on the chips were removed to make it harder to reverse engineer.

All the Electronic Arts games stop and say "Remove rom at $C000" if they found anything there. That's what they do on my 130XE with a custom OS.

  12. I have an 800 with "The Impossible" disk backup system installed in it. The board is a custom OS board that allows you to duplicate a copy protected disk on an unmodified disk drive. The only catch is that the disk will only play on a computer with an impossible board installed.

I lost all my Antic and Analog magazines a few years ago and I would appreciate it if someone could scan an image of an advertisement for The Impossible. I remember seeing them frequently in the magazine ads back in the day.

  13. Just a bit of an update. There are three of these in existence that I know of. Ted Brunner has one just like mine, google him and you can see some photos. Someone else emailed me photos of one he had found. Unfortunately it had all the TutorVision and World Book emblems scratched off. I can't recall his name offhand. All three of these were found in the greater Chicago area. World Book did have their offices there. I would imagine The Blue Sky Rangers probably have one as well.

I'm not sure how many of the game cartridges for it exist.
