Great to see some interest here I've already supplied the finished case and PCB files to get quotations for a mass production run
-
I can check whether these are available gold plated as well. The biggest problem was finding jacks that have the right height and size to fit into the colecovision and on the PCBs I will most probably also sell working USB power supplies with cables as well. They will have replaceable plugs for every country.
-
No worries about the color, of course the final version will be black When using 3D printing services, standard white is usually fastest and cheapest. Don't worry about the price right no - I'll try to keep the retail price below 20 EUR, though that mostly depends on the interest. Production costs won't be high, but the mold and development costs need to be earned as well.
-
And here is a quick video:
-
Because USB is so common these days. Also, that USB Port has proper pegs going inside the PCB, it's not purely surface mounted. It's really strong.
-
I made a small video today which I'll upload most likely later tonight or tomorrow. Here are a few pics of the adaptor for you The case is a 3D printed one, the final one will be properly produced with mold injection: That's how it looks plugged into the Colecoivision: And the PCBs:

Well, if 500 of the adaptors sell, that would easily be good enough to keep them within a reasonable price range Seeing that the Supergame has sold 700 times, that number should be possible. I need to check whether I can get a supergame module somewhere, but it seems they're planning a 4th production run, so I would have to wait until I can officially order it. And the Expansion Module #1 is also not easy to get. So yeah, I could also ship it to the US, if need be. BTW: I'm planning a new controller as well... similar to the NES one, but with more rounded edges (more comfortable) and the keypad where Start and Select is But that's for next year, let's first finish the Power Converter first
-
Finally, I received the (probably) final revision and it runs absolutely stable without any issues in my Colecovision. Tested multiple games as well as the AtariMax Flashcart AND let the RAM-Tester run for a few hours without failure. I will also receive a 3D-Print of the planned case within this week and will the make a little video for you. So, anyone here with the Expansion Module #1 and the Supergame module who could test it out? (Preferably from Europe, as that makes shipping easier)
-
And another update: The traces on the first version were too thin, so the power broke down too fast. I'll receive the next samples within the next few days. Question: I've got a CV and a flashcart - but I don't have ANY of the accessories. So I can test whether the adaptor works fine with the standard system - however, I'd need someone who could test and confirm that it's working with accessories as well. Anyone up here who has the accessories for a free sample to test?
-
Sorry for the late reply. I'm currently attending the Gamescom in Germany (as exhibitor), so that needed a lot of time to prepare. I made a quick test with the adaptor and it basically works - but 12V is not stable yet. Could be that my USB adaptor or the USB cable was simply cheap as the rate converter chip should be able to provide enough power (as long as the Coleco doesn't need more power than the original AC adaptor states), but I haven't had the time to analyze where exactly the power breaks down. But it's a very good start that it works In worst case we'll do it the other way round: replace the Micro USB with some barrel connector and use a 12V input, downconverting the +5 and -5V. That would help here, but a standard MicroUSB port would be nicer.
-
Yes, exactly I'm planning to put this into a plastic case about the same size as the original CV plug, so it's basically the same size as the original plug but with a MicroUSB connector instead of the cable. It works internationally, as no AC connector is included (and it's easy to get your own USB Adaptor + MicroUSB Cable anywhere, in case you don't have one yet). I had the idea when I wanted to play with my Colecovision and tried looking for a proper Power Supply, as mine is busted as well. An ATX power supply works, but is inconveniently big And as I didn't find any (but a lot of people looking for one), I thought that there should be a way to produce one.
-
I never had any of those modules, so I'm not sure how they work. Did they need something else except for the original CV power supply?
-
Yes, I know I always say "AC" port, even if it's totally wrong... as most people think of the power connector My bad. The -5V are being created by a DC-DC Inverter. Well, I only have a normal CV for testing here (no addons), and a flashcart (which uses more power than a normal game, so it's a good test). The prototype samples are on the way to me, so I can test them soon The CV power supply provides 0.9A with 5V (= 4.5W), 0.1A with -5V (= 0.5W) and 0.3A with 12V (= 3.6W). Alltogether, that's 8.6W. If you use a 2A USB-Adaptor, you have 5V * 2A = 10W in theory, so that's already more than the CV Power supply provides. There are even 3A Adaptors out there, which can provide 15W. Sure, you've got a bit of loss with the conversions, but these losses are known thanks to the datasheets. 1.8A should be enough to provide the same power the CV power supply provides. We'll find out how well it works in reality as soon as the adaptors arrive here
-
By using a Step-Up regulator. The ColecoVision won't need a mod. When it's finished, you just plug it into the AC Port of the ColecoVision and connect that to a 2A Micro USB AC adaptor.
-
We're currently working on a small plug that goes into the Colecovision (no modification needed) which has a Micro-USB port. You can then simply use a normal Micro-USB AC Adaptor to power your Colecovision. We have prototypes and will start to work on cases in September, so production should be possible within this year

Dragonbox Pyra - Linux open gaming handheld
EvilDragon17 replied to JDTAY's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Well, that's not our fault. PayPal doesn't allow preorders or crowdfunding, so we can't offer that payment method for the Pyra. Same for Everdrives, as those are forbidden items by PayPal... And all the other payments you can use are the standard ones you can use in our shop as well. Not sure what the problem with the pre-order FAQ is... I was trying to make everything as clear as possible, but if you find anything that can be improved, let me know. I just want to make it clear that we're no huge company, so any money paid here could be gone if something goes badly wrong. It was the same with the Pandora and as you saw here, some people got burnt... so I just want to make it clear to everyone that a risk exists here as well. As with any other crowdfunded devices made by a small team: Only use money you don't urgently need. You can be sure I'll try my best, but that doesn't mean it will work out as it should. I really didn't like how the Pandora was handled... but that was out of my hands until the very end -
Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

Well, what were the quality control and delivery problems since we have taken over the Pandora production years ago...? -

Hehe, nice I didn't think it's a good thing being mentioned in one sentence together with the Coleco Chameleon... but I guess it's okay like that -

I'm not sure it would be easy to write an FPGA core for a full Jaguar... is there one that's fully working out there already? -

I don't think that really happens. There's been scumbags before Kickstarter and the internet as well, and while people are pissed off, they still support stuff they like (they might be a bit more careful). I'm not that much concerned about it, but I liked the idea. Sure, if something goes wrong and it never sees the day of the light... well, that's life, it can happen. If there's a valid reason (running out of money, technical issues, etc.) But this looks more like mismanagement to me... and that's really sad. Especially as there was so much interest, contracts with Coleco, etc. It could've been a good thing, if managed properly... but he totally had to screw it up. Sure, even before you have working prototypes, you can at least show some work in progress. Designs, part of the schematic, ANYTHING. But all they had was a Jaguar case.. and that's no achievement if you got the molds. -

I always wonder why such things happen. The idea was good, the support by the community great - why the lies? Having played a role in the Pandora disaster (and recovering it at the end), I know that things can go wrong - sure they can. But if you're honest, the community will appreciate it. The prototype PCB is not yet finished when the ToyFair happens? Okay, why not put a SNES Jr. in there and TELL the people that the prototype PCB is not yet ready, the SNES is just for demonstration how the system will look like. Then you can at least show a sample PCB (even if not working yet) to everyone interested. We did the same at the GamesCom with the Pyra last year. The PCBs were not finished in time, so we showed the development board (off-the-shelf) as demonstration what it can do and some unpopulated or partly populated WIP PCBs with a 3D printed case and told everyone that what they can test on the monitor will be inside that portable system. Was it a problem? Nope, everyone understood that. Why, oh why do people have to lie just trying to satisfy everyone? The community is satisfied knowing the truth and seeing development continue later on. They will not be satisfied with such blatant lies... Geez, another basically good idea down the dumps -
Nice progress I especially like the prototype version with hundreds of cables in your video
