  1. This was mentioned some time ago in the INTV forum so I decided to post it here as it is scheduled for this weekend. It is fairly small compared to Too Many Games but it is not too far away so I might check it out as it is not too far and not too expensive. Here is some guy's video of last year's event.

  2. This years event was the largest yet and is highly recommended for anyone who is into the post crash systems. Personally I am slowly embracing a pre-crash only mentality so I wasn't as enthusiastic as I usually am. There were a only a handful of games in the marketplace that I was interested in and I did pick up a CIB Colecovision Mousetrap for $5.00 which I believe is a decent price. Only saw about 6 Vectrex carts and they were loose and common. What I did do this year that I have never done is attend a couple of panels both featuring Pat Contri. I especially enjoyed attending a live recording of the Completely Unnecessary Podcast with Pat and Ian. To be honest if I wasn't so incredibly close to this event I would probably no longer attend but I must admit that I do enjoy soaking in the geek atmosphere if only for a couple of hours.

Now that is one spooky cat! :D

That is my special boy Simon. He was acting very cute by sticking his head through the railing in the balcony so I thought that I would snap a cute photo to show the wife. Needless to say the image I captured wasn't quite what I expected but it did provide me with an avatar for the ages. Here is a pic of Simon sans demonic possession:

  4. Just realized that there isn't a thread dedicated to this very fine con which starts today and is going on as I speak. Tomorrow I will make the 15 minute journey to Oaks Pa. to the Philadelphia Convention Center. Part of me wants to return on Sunday to sit in on a live CU Podcast with Pat and Ian but that will mean I will have to purchase another ticket so we'll see how it goes. Anyway here is the website: http://toomanygames.com/

And a video of last year's con made by AA's very own Rob Maerz.

  5. This thread is relevant to my interests....

I was thinking lately about upgrading the TV in my small game room. Right now, I have a 25" Samsung CRT, and it's not great. I bought it in the late 90's, and it only has front and rear composite AV (the yellow video and the two sound channels) and RF. The tube has been discoloring lately, and I was thinking about upgrading. I am well versed in the world of Sony Trinitrons (and WEGA's), as I grew up with a couple of them, and they are awesome.

Anyone ever run one of those early 2000's CRT HDTV's? Right now, my game room has everything from the PS2 back to the 2600, but I was thinking of adding my 360 to the setup, and I don't want to use that crappy TV I currently have. If I upgrade to a modern LCD HDTV, that opens up another can of worms, including lack of light gun support and possibly the need for one of those frame skip box things for the older stuff. I do have a smaller 13" CRT that I could use when I want to play light gun games, but space is really limited in my room. I'm thinking that a CRT HDTV might be the best of both worlds.

I have a 2001 Toshiba hd crt and I have played my Xbox 360 on it. As good as the image is the overscan is noticeable on some games.

  6. The FV310 features an internal voltage regulator. It is the only consumer tube tv that I have ever heard that includes this feature. This will probably help during movies that features lots of scenes that transition from light to dark but I have no idea how effective this feature will be for video games. I would like to own a FV310 but I've had to settle for the previous years model the FV300. I also own a FS100. Instead of commenting how I feel about these 2 televisions I have decided to link 2 reviews that pretty much sum up my feelings.

  7. I average about one LD purchase every 15 months or so. The last 3 discs I purchased were from Pioneer's ANIMATION! ANIMATION! collection. An amazing series of discs btw. Other than this I am done with the format. I love the large, deluxe LD boxes and the audio was, on occasion, superior to dvd but blu-ray is just so superior to LD or dvd that my affinity for the format has all but disappeared.

  8. Although I have been unable to secure a FV310 I did manage to snag a 24" FV300 which I believe is identical except that it lacks the voltage regulator feature which is probably more useful for dvd viewing than for video games anyway. I was certainly impressed with the black levels, being able to push it down to the level of something resembling squid ink without crushing any image details. Better than my 2001 digital crt in that respect. BTW these tvs also feature a built in sub woofer on the 27 inch or larger models.

  9. CatPix, I had to look up the Thomson Black Diva set as I have never heard of it. Actually I am not sure that it ever got distributed here in the US. I am aware that there are boutique brands that have released some high quality sets and I have searched for Bang And Olufsen and Loewe tvs but they are extremely rare in the states compared to Europe and when I have seen them they have been 500+ US dollars. I think this is why many people on the forum gravitate towards Trinitron. It is a known quantity and is quite ubiquitous. Personally I would love to find a commercial CRT with a convex tube that performs as well as my Sony FV300 and is available in 27 inch or smaller screen sizes because all of the flat tubes I have seen seem to have some geometry problems. For the record I do look for 20 inch PVMs on occasion but I have yet to find one for less than $100.

If you're looking for the absolute best CRT television for retro gaming then the Sony KV-27FV310 is the finest ever produced.

I have been searching for one these but the only one I found is 36 inches and since I literally have no friends there was simply no way to transport it to my house. What I did find was the model that preceded this one, the 24FV300, which I believe is exactly the same as the FV310 except that is lacks the voltage regulator feature. BTW I absolutely love my FV300 and highly recommend picking one up if you see one.

  11. I threw away a CIB 3DO with about 25 CIB games. I also chucked about 50 pre-crash magazines. This was only about 7 years ago when I was moving into my house and I didn't want to make one final trip back to the old place to pick of these remaining items. Just for the record I also sold a NES toploader and a CIB copy of MUSHA for very little back in the day. Oh, and that life/youth thing, I threw that away as well.

  12. I have a 2009 plasma. I watch all of my movies and shows in their OAR. Never once did I ever have a hint of burn in. In addition I once did a 5 hour marathon of Quake 2 without any ill effects. My tv does have a burn in prevention feature called a pixel orbiter. This apparently shifts the pixels in an imperceptible manner to lessen the chance of burn in or temporary image retention. Having said that it seems that once plasma tvs entered the 3d generation image retention started to become a problem again for some models. At least this is the impression I get from following the forums over at Blu-ray.com. Damn shame as plasmas were the absolute apex of flat panel technology as far as film watching is concerned.

  13. Funny thing is that although I have been around since the Atari VCS days I really never noticed scanlines until I decided to start playing old game systems again about year and half ago which I learned about from an episode of Game Sack which prompted me to purchase a sd crt and do a comparison. If I had never done a comparison I probably would be very happy to play games on my hd crt. I do have a flatpanel tv btw. It is a 60" plasma and it is mounted on the living room wall. Even if I had scanlines and an outboard scaler I still would not like to play such low resolution games on a display of that size. Now that I think about it I have the Sega Genesis collection for my Xbox and I can honestly say that I prefer to play my Genesis games on a smaller display.

  14. I was at my local game store and noticed that they had a boxed copy of Fathom in their display case. It looked to be in very good condition. The owner had not yet determined a price for it. I am not (yet) an Intellivision collector but I get the feeling this is a rare game. So I am curious as to what a fair price for this would be.
