  1. Do not store important color data in your NES game as magic numbers! This has been a public service announcement brought to you by the Department of Programmer Sanity.

As opposed to defining constants? That's a lesson I have to hammer home often with a couple of my python students. Source code space is uber cheap now and it doesn't affect memory space used by the running program, so why would someone not want to use descriptive names for variables and constants?

I have no idea what you guys are on about...Magic numbers?...Ummm is that like a "Safe Word"?

    3. bent_pin

      bent_pin

It means you should assign a name to your numbers in your programs, as opposed to leaving unexplained number scattered throughout your code.

  2. If this certificate issue has done one thing, it's that it made me use Edge for once since I can actually bypass the warning there.

What did you set tls.version.min and max to?

    3. Mirage

      Mirage

I'm back in too (if you see my message for help, Al). In my case, it wasn't the certificate issue stopping me, it was my own poor record-keeping!

    4. MegaManFan

      MegaManFan

@Albert I set Max to 4 and Min to 0.

  3. I haven't played my 7800 in a long time, so I lost track of the power supply for it. Me being me, I figured that I would just get a new one after buying Baby Pac-Man not realizing that they cost $40 minimum! Better start looking.

  4. Friendship ended with CHELCO. Now SANYO is my best friend.

  5. "You got a checksum error today, but that doesn't mean you have to like it!"

  6. Commodore woes are OVER! It's a bit of a cop out, but I bought a replacement board off ebay to put in the 1541 and now it works again. It may have taken me until now to view the SX-64 Christmas Demo, but better late than never.

  7. I keep forgetting to change my profile picture back.

      You're ready for December!

  8. My C64 woes continue now that my 1541 drive stopped working while I was replacing my breadbin's CIA chip. Why do Commodore stuff have to be so needy?

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

Commodore did a lot of cost-cutting, likely extended into the (lower) quality of parts.

  9. The good news is that I got the sockets soldered to the C64. The bad news is that swapping cia chips only makes the c64 not load from the disk drive, so I definitely need a new CIA chip. ?

  10. FINALLY desoldered both CIA chips from my C64, and I've already decided I never want to do it again so I need to get some sockets.

    1. Stephen

      Stephen

If a chip is removed for any reason, the #1 rule is a socket goes back in place first.

  11. It's a sad day when your c64's CIA chip goes bad and it's directly soldered to the board.

      @Stephen

the c64 has a fairly reasonable board, but no one in human history has said " oh boy I can't wait to desolder a 40 pin dip package!"

    3. Stephen

      Stephen

With a decent desoldering station (my Hakko 808 for example) - I can desolder (without damaging) a 40-pin DIP in under 60 seconds.  When I am doing my Ataris, even the notoriously junk XE line, I'll do a 40-pin DIP and the chip falls out under gravity without touching it after cleaning the last pin.  It's really easy to get a rhythm going.

Kinda like a special-ed ASMR situation. Oddly relaxing.

I was never able to get it under two minutes. But they do fall out with the last pin.

  12. I'm sick. My nose is stuffy, I have a bad cough, and I now have a strange urge to play some Odyssey 2.

  13. The real April Fools joke is how cold it was.

  14. I swear my Laserdisc player has a mind of its own. I pulled it out to play a new disc I got today, and it kept saying that there was no disc for both LD and CD. After taking it apart, cleaning the lens, and reseating connectors, it still wouldn't read disc, so I gave up and put it back together. I decided to try playing a disc one more time, and it randomly started reading disc again. I swear it just wants to see me squirm until it got its fill, then it will let me play disc.

  15. Having a bit of fun with my new handheld oscilloscope.

  16. Is anybody else having trouble connecting to Lemon 64?

By the way, both Lemon64 and Lemon Amiga had a major server breach so everyone are told to update their passwords and perhaps even more importantly make sure to not reuse passwords on other sites (like we've been told the past 15+ years).

    3. krslam

      krslam

Any word on when/if lemon is coming back? Haven't been able to load the site for 9 days now.

It appears the world is waiting for TNT, and I don't mean explosives.

  17. Implosion for the C64 plays like a crappier version of Zone Ranger, but what other game says "YOU HERO" whenever you get a high score?

I've always thought the game H.E.R.O. could have an ending where a girl runs up, gives you a hug and says "My H.E.R.O.!"

  18. $30 international shipping for £5 microswitches!? You've got to me kidding me Ebay!

    1. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

Depends where you're from. I'd expect that kind of shipping rate from the US to the UK. I wouldn't expect it the other way round. Shipping to the US should probably be no more than $10.

  19. Looks like Commando for the c64 made me go "commando" on my c64 joystick and now I need to replace one of the microswitches.

You got so excited about a war game that you undressed?

Actually, I was just playing the game when one of the microswitches broke. Thanks for the laugh though.

Going commando on a joystick....really sounds like a euphemism.

  20. I thought Toobin' was supposed to be a fictionalization, not a simulation!

  21. Summer time means Atari 8-bit time!

  22. Semester is finally coming to a close. Hopefully, I'll be able to work on my electronics projects over summer break.

  23. Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the AC is so delightful
Since it's not gonna snow again
Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain.

      GoldLeader

Are you in California?  (Just my quick guess)...Plenty of snow here, just bring your own shovel and maybe I'll be able to get the car out in a couple of days ...I better, If wer'e open, I've got work on Tuesday ;)

  24. Turns out some random "blank" disk I used to test the Laser 128 actually has a copy of Summer Games written to it. What's the deal with me and floppy disk containing copies of Summer Games?

    1. RockyRaccoon

      RockyRaccoon

Ha. I'm totally jealous of your Laser 128 thou. A friend of mine had one and I was always super jealous of it.

  25. Scored me a Laser 128. They're pretty much Apple iic computers but with a little bit more.

      @save2600 About $60. Apple ii's aren't necessarily cheap.

      DeathAdderSF

If you didn't already, try'n find & buy the expansion box. It's a solid metal enclosure that'll allow you to truly experience the "little bit more" the computer has to offer: as it can accept up to 2 Apple II expansion cards. There are also modern-day clones of this unit, but they don't come w/an enclosure.

@DeathAdderSF Duely noted. Also is there by any chance a modern clone of the Mockingboard for sale anywhere?
