My AV to HDMI went bad. The replacement came in today... that's how I just found out my SNES is busted. It was fine a couple weeks ago! I feel like crying...

Best as I can tell, it would cost as much for a repair as a replacement deck. Which sucks, because cosmetically this one's great with no yellowing. Maybe I can save some money buying a functional junker & swapping shells.
I know power stuff can mess with units, but it still seems odd that out of 20-odd things plugged in, that's the ONLY one that got fried.

I bought a plug n' play at a thrift store that had leaky batteries in it- what's the best way to clean the corrosion? Perferably without dissassembling the unit- I'm unsure of my ability to reassemble it.

I'm with Keatah. I usually use a cotton swab and vinegar. The corrosion is usually alkaline, so the acid in the vinegar neutralizes it. Then after clean up, I use alcohol to "rinse" it off. I don't want that acid, however weak, to sit on there. Might be fine after drying, but I ain't takin' chances.

Update: The unit is working!
After reading your suggestions, I checked the cabinets- and we didn't have baking soda, vinegar, peroxide, or even Pepsi on hand... but I did find some lemon juice! So I used that (plus an alcohol swab after to clean up any residual sugars). A couple of the terminals are now rust brown from corrosion, so I don't have high hopes for long term use- but it turned right on & worked fine with some fresh batteries! If I ever learn to s...

And my 700th videogame is... Bowling on the Microvision. Not very auspiscous. Ah well.

Question- do I destroy the label on my copy of Worm War I so I can access the board & possibly make it play? (I tried heating it up to remove- no go, it's too delicate.)

If you have to access the screws under the label and can't remove the label with heat then I'd say the best option is to take an x-acto knife and carefully cut out the portions of the label covering the screws in clean little circles. The label will still be damaged but at least it would still be somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

-
Jin gave me an idea- I used my excacto to cut a small flap immediately around the screws, and just peeled up that bit of label. That way if I could get it working, I could press the flap back down.
Unfortunately, after getting the board out even my untrained eye knew those traces are pretty damn scratched. I think this one's toast.

What the heck did Nintendo release that uses a USB Mini connection? Just noticed the cable I'm using to charge my PS3 controller is Nintendo branded, and I have no idea where it came from?

Pro controllers. I kinda wish more controllers used mini instead of micro which is a lot less robust. PS3 controllers always pissed me off because you could only charge them from the console, and only charge it with the console on. I've never seen a single wall wart that could successfully charge a PS3. It simply refuses to work off a dumb charger. Even on the Retro Freak's wired connection, my PS3 slowly drained itself until it quit working. Effing brilliant design, Sony!

Bought a Pac-Man tamagotchi on sale last week. Noticed while ringing at work yesterday it managed to break off my lanyard & dissappear. I can only assume it ended up in someone's bag.
I am surprisingly upset by this- especially knowing that, even if it does turn up/get returned, it will probably have died from lack of care. (And of course, the sale is over now so a replacement is 1 1/2 times more expensive.) ?

I purchased the Pac-Man Tamagotchi three weeks ago, toy shop in town was selling it half price. Nice addition.

My local used media store, one of two places in my area that had a decent volume of pre-crash gaming, burned down last night. Now I'm sad.

The direct opposite happened here; There were 2 comic book stores in town. One sucked and we all got banned (Myself included) and the bad one burned down...But we all knew it was a scam 4 insurance $$. The lady had taken every single valuable comic (all X-Mens etc.) and her rolodex of subscribers home with her the night before the fire...

If anybody's local Gamestop still carries the Disc Skip Fixer fluid, maybe get a bottle or two for me? It's being clearanced out & my stores have long since stopped carrying it. I'd love to stock up a bit!

derFunkenstein: I use cotton rounds- soft enough to avoid harming the disc, but robust enough to do the job.
Mr.Maddog: interestingly enough, my local record stores sell proper vinyl & very little in the way of CD gear. There is an FYE nearby, I'll poke around their website. Not expecting much, I've already been looking & all anyone still seems to have is those terrible disc doctors.

I wish I'd discovered the Yakuza series 15 years ago.
That is all.

I shelled out for Kiwami 2 just recently on Ebay (I didn't want to run of out games to play after switching from Kiwami to Zero.)
The only reason I haven't bit on the collection yet, is I know it dropped to $30 at Best Buy a couple months back & I'm hoping to get it closer to that price... but I imagine I'll pick it up fairly soon!

I learned today that my Mom pre-ordered me the Shadow of the Colossus remake for my birthday. I be super stoked!
-
Picked up a Switch on Sunday afternoon- no hunting, it was just in the case at Wal-Mart when I went to look for 3DS styluses. I assumed it just meant stock was finally leveling out, but the internet leads me to believe I was maybe just lucky?

I still want someone to 3D print a mini Jag shell so I can make a Coleco Chameleon Retro pi.

Ninja Sex Party marks the release of Under the Covers 2 with a music video sure to be de-monetized by the end of the day!

Mom got me Colecovision games for Christmas... they haven't attempted to get me retro in years! I'm so happy!

I have a new laptop! Back to the Internet!

It's not everyday Ebay has a 15% off coupon during a bonus bucks promo. Which makes seeing my order cancelled becuase 'his wife misplaced the box' REALLY frustrating! ><

My copy of Rikki & Vikki for the 7800 came the other day- this game makes me want to get my system refurbished & AV modded, just so I can enjoy it better!

Oh Yeah!
That is one Fantastic Game!!! I played it a bit when I first got it, but need to get back into it! FWIW, My 7800 is S-Video and A/V modded, but it's weird... for 7800 games it looks stellar in S-Video...2600 games wash out and the color slightly changes across the screen, and so they look better in A/V out for some reason...
-
@GoldLeader - there are separate color potentiometers inside the 7800 for the TIA and MARIA color outputs. They don’t change saturation but they do adjust color hue. Tweaking the TIA color pot might make just enough difference to prevent any kind of washed out look.

Thank goodness for the post-saving feature! Our internet has developed a bad habit of cutting out for a few seconds at a time here & there, and did so right as I went to submit a reply to a thread. Thought I'd lost it, but when I went to re-type it everything loaded back in. Very convenient!

@save2600 I'll take a look to see if I can adjust the permission to allow deletion of status updates/comments.
-
@save2600 Can you see if you can delete comments from status updates now?
-
Yes, now you can! Under options right at the status updates, nice! And thank you. Before, used to have to go to a members' wall to edit. Under options at the status updates, delete was the only option. Being able to edit right there would be nice as well.
To edit now, you click on the time you wrote, which takes you to that members page. Then there's edit, options /delete and report. Seems options could hold both edit and delete. Or just delete without the options. As it is now, requires an extra click or two.

Brought my 3DS to Pax West, but no street passes to be had. Yep, this thing's officially dead.

There was a few years there where I took my 3DS with me everywhere I went just because of Street Passes. It was fun and unlike any other video game experience ever before or since. The Street Pass Plaza games were a great feature, as were collecting puzzle pieces. I am a 50-something man now and probably too old for such things but I do actually kind of miss it now that it's gone. RIP the 3DS; you were a good friend.

You know what I'd like? A mini Coleco Chameleon case to put a retro pi in.

IT'S SPRING!

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap wave 1 sold out in 2 mintues. Fastest I've seen a Limited Run Games release go. Good for them!

It's the first day of SPRING!

Was having a nice, quiet day at work up until the last hour of my shift, when one of a pair of jerks fighting at the other end of the mall fired off a couple shots & got the place evacuated/lockdowned... no one hurt, but made for a lousy afternoon!
-
Jeez, crazy afternoon! I remember when I worked at the Mall of America back in 2011 there was one day when every store had to drop the shutters and lock down when a group of 30 or 40 young people started rioting after a rapper that was rumored to be doing an appearance at the mall that day didn't show up.
