  1. A Christmas Carol of renewed relevance, what with a new Smask out and all...

  2. I bought a plug n' play at a thrift store that had leaky batteries in it- what's the best way to clean the corrosion? Perferably without dissassembling the unit- I'm unsure of my ability to reassemble it.

@MrMaddog We tended to use 7Up back in the day to clean up car battery contacts because it doesn't leave such a goopy residue like Pepsi.

      So, perhaps that?

I'm with Keatah. I usually use a cotton swab and vinegar. The corrosion is usually alkaline, so the acid in the vinegar neutralizes it. Then after clean up, I use alcohol to "rinse" it off. I don't want that acid, however weak, to sit on there. Might be fine after drying, but I ain't takin' chances.

      Update: The unit is working!

After reading your suggestions, I checked the cabinets- and we didn't have baking soda, vinegar, peroxide, or even Pepsi on hand... but I did find some lemon juice! So I used that (plus an alcohol swab after to clean up any residual sugars). A couple of the terminals are now rust brown from corrosion, so I don't have high hopes for long term use- but it turned right on & worked fine with some fresh batteries! If I ever learn to s...

  4. PAX was pretty good this year.

  5. Was having a nice, quiet day at work up until the last hour of my shift, when one of a pair of jerks fighting at the other end of the mall fired off a couple shots & got the place evacuated/lockdowned... no one hurt, but made for a lousy afternoon!

      Skippy B. Coyote

Jeez, crazy afternoon! I remember when I worked at the Mall of America back in 2011 there was one day when every store had to drop the shutters and lock down when a group of 30 or 40 young people started rioting after a rapper that was rumored to be doing an appearance at the mall that day didn't show up.

  7. What the heck did Nintendo release that uses a USB Mini connection? Just noticed the cable I'm using to charge my PS3 controller is Nintendo branded, and I have no idea where it came from?

      HoshiChiri

A-HA! I found it- it's for the Wii U Pro Controller! I've never really convinced anyone to try a 2 player Wii U game, I forgot I even had one O.o

    4. Andromeda Stardust

      Andromeda Stardust

Pro controllers. I kinda wish more controllers used mini instead of micro which is a lot less robust. PS3 controllers always pissed me off because you could only charge them from the console, and only charge it with the console on. I've never seen a single wall wart that could successfully charge a PS3. It simply refuses to work off a dumb charger. Even on the Retro Freak's wired connection, my PS3 slowly drained itself until it quit working. Effing brilliant design, Sony!

  8. Picking up prescriptions is a lousy time to find out your insurance got cancelled and the letter saying so got lost in the mail. Just spent 4 hours trying to find another plan I could afford. My head hurts.

@jd_1138 I do- thankfully my meds aren't too expensive & my mom was with me today, so she spotted me to cover. I should be good for a month while I get the new plan sorted.

  10. If anyone picked up a DS lite in the Gamestop blowout today & would like some screen protectors, let me know- I've got a set I'm not using.

  11. I revived my copy of War Room on Colecovision- fiddled with it on and off for a few weeks to no avail until today. I finally decided to cut away some label and open it up. I think the board had slipped out of place, there was some bent plastic on the inside. Now the board's stopped wiggling & started working!

    1. carlsson

      carlsson

That tends to be a very common problem with VIC-20 carts, which are overly wide but the circuit board is much smaller, held in place with plastic tabs that easily break. I'm not sure if e.g. Arcadia carts have the same issues, or perhaps those PCB:s fill a larger part of the shell.

That's a totally cool gift, and congrats! I've never owned a ColecoVision as an adult but I did grow up with one as the very first console I ever played, so I've definitely got a lot of appreciation for it.

Best as I can tell, it would cost as much for a repair as a replacement deck. Which sucks, because cosmetically this one's great with no yellowing. Maybe I can save some money buying a functional junker & swapping shells.

I know power stuff can mess with units, but it still seems odd that out of 20-odd things plugged in, that's the ONLY one that got fried.

      Skippy B. Coyote

Sorry for the loss of your SNES, but it sounds like you've got the right plan. Find a really ugly but working yellowed one for cheap then open it up and drop the board from it in the pretty housing of your current SNES.

  17. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap wave 1 sold out in 2 mintues. Fastest I've seen a Limited Run Games release go. Good for them!

  18. Picked up a Switch on Sunday afternoon- no hunting, it was just in the case at Wal-Mart when I went to look for 3DS styluses. I assumed it just meant stock was finally leveling out, but the internet leads me to believe I was maybe just lucky?

I work in a Walmart and I haven't seen one since the initial shipment for the pre-orders.

  19. I opened up my intellivision today to see if messing with the RF adjustments could fix my picture issues. Turned out I didn't have the right tool for the adjustment, so I just put it back together. Powered it up just to make sure I didn't kill anything... and for some reason, it's better now! The picture's still not great, it's got a static roll & still flickers out every so often... but it's playable again! I finally got to try my secret santa games!

  20. Question- do I destroy the label on my copy of Worm War I so I can access the board & possibly make it play? (I tried heating it up to remove- no go, it's too delicate.)

      Skippy B. Coyote

If you have to access the screws under the label and can't remove the label with heat then I'd say the best option is to take an x-acto knife and carefully cut out the portions of the label covering the screws in clean little circles. The label will still be damaged but at least it would still be somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

    3. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

Late to the party, but...Yeah I'd have to agree with the Iceman here. I'd try one more time to clean the game etc, Maybe get it to play...If not, Screw the label!...Play the Game!!

    4. HoshiChiri

      HoshiChiri

Jin gave me an idea- I used my excacto to cut a small flap immediately around the screws, and just peeled up that bit of label. That way if I could get it working, I could press the flap back down.

Unfortunately, after getting the board out even my untrained eye knew those traces are pretty damn scratched. I think this one's toast.

According to the news report, the building went up in 1979, which meant no sprinkler system. I know they had a CIB Odyssey 2 and a couple CIB 2600s... goodness knows how many rare vinyls went up too.

    3. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

The direct opposite happened here; There were 2 comic book stores in town. One sucked and we all got banned (Myself included) and the bad one burned down...But we all knew it was a scam 4 insurance $$. The lady had taken every single valuable comic (all X-Mens etc.) and her rolodex of subscribers home with her the night before the fire...

They should be merged with UPS -- incorporate some logic into their setup. They don't even have simple stamp vending machines in the lobby at the local USPS's. You have to stand in line to buy a friggin' stamp.
