Pretty sure that Sophia 2 also allows for far easier switching between the resolutions i.e if you need to connect to different screens with different aspect ratios etc. My rev C board is fixed at a certain 4:3 resolution and would need to be returned to the guy who makes them if I needed to change its output resolution.

The GTIA chip is one of those big ones in the bottom-left of your photo. Yes you need to de-solder it and replace it with a socket first before you begin. Please see my write up at the following address which has some very useful info on the install including how to keep your rf shield and how to get audio etc...

@SainT I'd love to see a 'Delete' option to delete ROMS form the GameDrive interface on the Jag using the JagPad. My micro-SD card tends to be filled with all sorts of ROMS many of which turn out not to work when tested or they're corrupt or duplicates of other ROMS elsewhere on the SD-card. So it would be 'super convenient' to be able to delete unwanted ROMs on the Jag 'there and then', without having to remove the SD-card, put it in my laptop, find the file, delete the file etc. and without having to move the delicate micro-sd card between laptop and Jag numerous times etc. Thanks for listening :)

Great work @SainT. At this stage... is it possible for us to store our existing cart roms on the same SD card as our JCD images? i.e if we copied the JCD images to a new SD card (as advised), before copying our cart roms on to the same SD card afterwards. Or must we always keep our cart roms on a totally separate SD card to our JCD images? Also do you have a rough ETA as to when this new firmware is available to us early investors in your early JagSD cart...?

Hi, I'm looking for an XEX rom download of this game 'Crypts Of Terror' for the Ultimate Cart in my 800xl. Enjoyed this game a lot back in the 80s but can't find file format anywhere that's compatible with my Ultimate Cart. I've tried the conversion tools too without any joy. Supported file formats are CAR, XEX, ROM and BIN. If anyone knows of a download of any on these formats anywhere or can create one for me or advise how to create/convert one that works with the Ultimate Cart, ideally XEX format, that would be fab.

Thanks, that looks useful. I might have a go at this mod if ever I get the time. I did the 50/60hz switch mod about ten years ago which worked out great so I reckon I could manage this too. I just need to find a space on the case for the switch as I've already replaced the RF modulator with the 50/60hz switch. Have you any idea what the 'top middle' and 'bottom left' on this diagram refer too? So, should I connect my wires to the top side of those L17 and L18 components or the bottom side? Thanks. -

Wow, it's certainly 'feature rich'! Did you make it as a 'one off' yourself? Do you use it? Similar outputs to my Catbox which is bulky and weighs a tonne too! -

Hey folks. Does anybody know of a mod to the Jaguar which provides a separate audio output socket on the Jaguar case? The 'Retrotink 2X SCART' solution and the 'SNES2JAG + Rad2X' solutions are great if your screen/monitor has speakers or if your screen has an audio output which you can connect to speakers. However if you have a screen (like the NEC Multisync LCD 1970NXp that I have) then you get no sound whatsoever. I'm currently using an older (un-shielded) SCART cable to connect my Jag to my 'RetroTINK 2X' which provides two additional (L+R) RCA audio leads but it's not great because it's an old DIY cable which is un-shielded and so the picture is not as quite good as my standard Jag SCART cable. I would like to be able to connect by Jag to my RetroTINK 2X using my high quality standard SCART cable and then get audio separate audio socket(s) on my Jag, via a custom audio mod of some sort. Any ideas/suggestions folks? -

For anyone looking to buy the 'rare as hen's teeth' RAD2X to go with their new SNES2JAG adapter, head on over to eBay and grab this one. Only 8 hours left on the auction. Good luck! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274401167003 -

Hi @cubanismo, very interesting thread, many thanks. If only I'd had that resource when I was trying (unsuccessfully) to butcher together a similar 'direct' (Jag to NEC Multisync monitor) cable of my own. So what stage are you at with this 'direct' cable right now? Are you just trying to figure out the v-sync still? Or do you think it's fine without the v-sync and just needs housing to complete? I think you're probably mistaken about this 'direct' cable solution being a niche market. The retro gaming scene seems to have exploded in recent years so there's a lot of people looking for ways of attaching their old consoles to modern screens. That includes us Atari/Jag folks. I think this solution consisting of a second hand (readily available) 15khz monitor (I found mine a few years ago easily on Ebay for £30), plus your custom Jag-VGA cable would be a really attractive, 'clutter free' and affordable solution. Especially if your cable provides a similar quality picture to the RetroTINK line doubler adapters, and if you can produce them for a relatively low price. I would buy one of your cables even though I've just spent over £100 on a RetroTINK (which gives perfect picture). I think the big advantage your direct cable would have over any line doubler or upscaler is that it's a simple/direct cable and doesn't involve an extra adapter/box which itself requires an additional power supply. All your cable would need is a particular type of (readily available) monitor. I'd be really interested to see close up video footage of your direct cable in action. Also, yes please put me top of your list for a 'customer-ready' version. I'm happy to 'test' prototypes for you too on my NEC 1970NXp. I've had 2 kids since I last tinkered with making cables like this so I don't think I'd have time to make one myself. Love the audio-out you've added too btw. -

Thanks @eightbit and apologies if I referred to the 'RetroTINK 2x Scart' as an upscaler rather than a line doubler. Having received my 'RetroTINK 2x Scart' this afternoon I can totally agree with you, the picture it amazing, the best I've ever seen from my Jag, and so much better than the 'el-cheapo' adapter I was using until now. -

That's right... a 15Khz monitor SHOULD NOT need an upscaler at all, that's why I was looking at things like Catbox and Amberry adapters initially, but the picture was terrible, totally unplayable. I can only assume that my NEC Multisync monitor is not 100% 15Khz compatible, despite being included on all of the lists of 15Khz compatible monitors (e.g. http://15khz.wikidot.com/) My NEC Multisync 1970NXp works fine with the 15Khz signal from my Atari ST... but strangely it's terrible with the 15Khz video signal from my Jaguar (what is the difference though?). Does anybody else have one of the monitors from the NEC Multisync range with experiences of using it with the Jag that they can share...? Anyway, a year or so ago I finally gave up with the 15Khz approach.... and started looking at the upscaler approach. It's a shame because I'd much prefer to not have to use an upscaler at all. -

I bought an Ambery for my Jag too, in one of my early attempts to get a decent picture on my NEC Multisync 1970NXp (15Khz compatible) screen. I had no joy with it whatsoever, just a really really grainy horrible picture. Not sure what I was doing wrong. I also (somehow) bought a CatBox too with similarly poor results. More recently I bought Arananet's 'Jag Video Adapter which was also meant to provide the output that my monitor could display. However it produced no picture whatsoever on my NEC Multisync. The only video adapter I've ever had any joy with whatsoever is the common (but widely despised) 'HD Video Converter' which is a very early basic and widely available upscaler from Ebay. The picture is reasonable but not perfect and annoyingly not centred correctly on the screen. I then turned my attention to the (very expensive) Kitty Box but stock ran out just as I was about to place my order. I then found myself here and the 'Rad2X + SNES2JAG' solution... and then ultimately to the 'RetroTINK 2X Scart' which is due to arrive imminently which might just finally bring my long search to an end! I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who's had better luck than me with any of the adapters I've mentioned above. I can only assume that the NEC Multisync monitor I'm trying to connect to is where the difficulty lies. -

Interesting! Please could you link us to the CGA connector you're referring to, then tell us how you will upscale the CGA signal to true VGA. Thanks. -

Well done to JudasPrime for finally completing this latest batch of SNES2JAG adapters, it really seems like an exciting project for those looking for hdmi output from their Jag. However, after 5 months of waiting for this latest batch of SNES2JAG adapters to become available... I finally gave up waiting last weekend and bought myself a 'RetroTINK 2x SCART' adapter from VideoGamePerfection.com. As far as I can tell, the 'RetroTINK 2x SCART'... provides the same HDMI output (powered by the same RetroTINK technology) without the need for an additional SNES2JAG adapter, unless anyone can tell me otherwise? Anyway, as a result of switching from the Rad2x to the 'RetroTINK 2x SCART' I'm now selling (on eBay) the Rad2x adapter (for SNES, N64 and GameCube) that I bought from retrogamingcables.co.uk 5 months ago. These Rad2x adapters are not currently available from retailer retrogamingcables and there's currently no indication as to when they'll be available again. I figured that you guys who are still interested in the 'Rad2X + SNES2JAG' solution would be interested in this Rad2x auction as they are currently so hard to come by... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274401167003 Thank you. -
What was your thinking behind the change in bootloader and firmware, if you don't mind me asking @SainT ? I'm also curious to know... do our SD/GD carts have no CD support whatsoever right now? Or do they currently have your 'unfinished' CD support which doesn't support all CD titles? Thanks.
-
Can anyone confirm for us yet... what the differences are (apart from the cart label design) between the 'SD' cart that was sold to 80 people (including me) in the initial run... and the latest 'GD' cart that's being sold to people on a larger scale now. I'm particularly interested to know whether there are any hardware differences...? Many thanks.

I have an 800xl. Is shere any point in me installing this upgraded firmware into my ultimate cart?

Hi, @Judas-Prime, hope the finishing touches are going well Is there any update on when the eBay listings for SNES2JAG will go live? Is it imminent or do you think you're still quite a way off? Thanks. -
@SainTApart from the cart label, what are the differences between those of us who got the original 'Jag SD' cart and the new run of carts being sold soon by AA and DragonBox...? e.g. Are there any differences on the PCB itself or with the firmware available on each...? Thanks.

Awesome @DrTypo, many thanks. I'll give RC3 a spin later today ? Yes I imagine it would be difficult to get a moving starfield to look 'right'. Could look great if done right though

As great as the music is in this awesome game, I would really like to see an Sfx only mode (like Tempest2000 has), so I can concentrate on the intense gameplay more. I often switch off the music in Tempest2000 for the same reason. It is often difficult in this game to distinguish important sound effects from the music. I think the sfx of being hit by enemy fire or by enemy collisions or the sfx of firing your weapon or hitting the ground are equally as important to hear... as the sound of collecting a pod. Ideally it would be great to have a volume slider for both sfx and music... that would add some much needed customisation, but I understand you have to 'draw a line' under development for these projects at some point. I also wondered how easy it would be to implement some kind of moving star field in the background during gameplay. That would add to the graphical experience nicely. Aside from this feedback I gotta congratulate you for an absolutely awesome game here... genuinely a better all round gaming experience than much of the commercial library... and nothing quite as intense as this available apart from Tempest2000. Many thanks for some great work here @DrTypo , look forward to seeing your future projects too ?
