  1. I don't know if Final Fantasy 9 counts or not, but even if it doesn't, you bring up an interesting point: there are several games that feature card games. I have to admit I never spent that much time playing the card game in Final Fantasy IX. Final Fantasy VIII's Triple Triad, on the other hand, I really liked. I wanted to check out that iOS version that came out a while ago, but I never got around doing that.
  2. Beautiful Katamari is $5 on Xbox Live as part of a Namco Sale, so that's why I was asking. Getting a PS2 version of a Katamari game is unfortunately not an option right now. Thanks for the brief explanation about the series!
  3. I used to love trading card games when I was younger and that obsession also applied to video games based on TCG. Over the last couple of years, the genre has become more and more popular thanks to titles like Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and other free-to-play games that are playable on mobile. But even though Hearthstone is really well put together, I strongly feel like the free-to-play aspect is detrimental to the experience, making the process of getting new cards painfully slow. So what are some of your favorite TCG video games? I'll include a list below, but some of my personal favorites are Digimon Digital Card Battle, Pokemon Trading Card Game and Duels of the Planeswalker. Top 10: Trading Card Video Games
  4. I couldn't help but noticing that a lot of people mentioned Katamari Damacy here and I never played that. Maybe I'll track down a copy, but does anybody know if Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360 is any good?
  5. I played Crisis Core quite recently for the purposes of review and I'm really glad I did, especially after all those years reading about that game. Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear Acid definitely came up while I was doing research for my post, but didn't make it to the final version. Still, terrific covers.
  6. I recently bought a PSP game out of interest and I fell in love with its cover, so that encouraged me to write a post with some of my favorite box art for PSP games (I'll include a link to the article below.) Nevertheless, I probably missed some terrific box art and taking into account there are a lot of collectors here, I was wondering what some of your favorites were. Note that I only included North American releases, PSP exclusives should be prioritized and finally, only the box art is important, so the quality of the game shouldn't influence your decision. Thanks! Top 10: PSP Game Box Art
  7. I can't count the number of hours I played Pro Evolution Soccer 6 when I was younger. But despite playing traditional soccer games for hours and hours (by traditional, I mean FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer,) the most fun I had with soccer games was when they had arcade elements. I compiled a list with some of my favorites, but I know I must have missed a couple. Which arcade-style games are missing from the list? Which are your personal favorites? Thanks in advance! Top 10: Best Arcade-Style Soccer Games
  8. I didn't include any of these games on my personal list, but even then, I have to agree that those are some fantastic PS2 titles. I loved the atmosphere in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and I often find myself thinking about parts of that game (the soundtrack was fantastic in my opinion.) Also, Guitar Hero was such an innovative rhythm game back when it came out and I had a terrific time playing it. If I remember correctly, those were all covers, but that was such an entertaining game.
  9. I still own most of these, but I never got around to playing Katamari Damacy. That game looked quirky and weird, but I never came across a copy, so I completely forgot about it. Maybe I should change that...
  10. PSS you bring up a good point. I went to Modern Gaming before posting this and didn't find the PS2 name anywhere, so I just assumed I could post it here. Where should I post something like this next time?
  11. Thanks for providing a curated list with some of your favorites! I know most of them from when I was a kid, though I've never been a fan of Battletoads, haha.
  12. I agree with you. Some of the older beat 'em ups haven't aged particularly well (though that can be said about most video games) and that's because of the design decisions you mention. Of course, personal preference in a specific genre definitely helps even if a game doesn't hold up very well. By the way, thanks for all your recommendations, I haven't heard about the arcade games you mention, so I'll check them out.
  13. Even to this day, the PlayStation 2 is my favorite home console. After all, the PS2 had thousands of games to choose from, a DVD player and backwards compatibility with the original PlayStation, among other amazing features. I still own dozens of PlayStation 2 games in my collection, but I know I missed several games a lot of people are passionate about (I never got to the play Persona 4, Ratchet & Clank, Timesplitters, Sly and Disgaea.) So apart from sharing some of my favorite titles, I encourage you to share yours. It's never too late to play some of those classics. Top 10: My Favorite PlayStation 2 Games
  14. Oh, that's awesome. I didn't know that Grabbed by the Ghoulies was available as an Original Xbox title. I'm playing most of my games on my Xbox 360 now (I'm catching up with all those games I missed from that generation,) but I have to say that I never bought an Xbox Original yet. Some of those games seem pretty good, but Microsoft has never promoted them and I've never seen them on sale. And I'll do a quick search about Die Hard Arcade. It sounds like an amazing beat 'em up.
  15. Everyone who plays video games has to deal with their own pile of shame. Those are the games you've gotten over the years, but for different reasons have never found the time to play. This situation became more common when digital distribution services (Steam, GOG, XBLA, PSN) started popularizing seasonal sales, but I think this situation also applies to some of you collectors out there. So I came up with that tips and strategies, as well as some resources that might help you overcome your pile of shame or at least make a dent in it. As usual, I'm also interested in what works for you personally, so feel free to share your tips and ideas as well. 10 Tips for Dealing with Your Pile of Shame
  16. I see, Then I must download that game as soon as possible and start playing!
  17. I guess I've always assumed beat 'em up games had to be two-dimensional side-scrolling games. But actually, in games like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, you're still fighting dozens of under-powered enemies through melee combat and moving one section at a time. Having said all that though, I'm having trouble classifying those games under the beat 'em up genre. Wouldn't they just be 3D hack-and-slash instead?
  18. Wow! The Nintendo DS has some weird games in its library. Thanks for the recommendation
  19. Huh! I've never thought about that before. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
  20. Trebor, not to put you on the spot here, but I'm glad you bring up Bayonetta. While I was doing research for my article, a lot of people mentioned games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta or Transformers: Devastation as beat 'em ups. Do you really think they are an extension of classic beat 'em ups? Personally, I just consider them character action games, but I'm interested in other people's opinion. Thanks for all the other recommendations, by the way!
  21. Yes, Dungeons & Dragons Chronicles was a modern release of some classic beat 'em ups, so maybe I was cheating a little bit. I had to look up the Streets of Rage remake you mention and, despite coming out a few years ago, it looks pretty good. To be completely honest, I wasn't aware of that game, but maybe I should give it a try soon.
  22. I'm glad you liked the article! I recently played Sacred Citadel for the purposes of review and I enjoyed it more than I thought (the game was available for free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.) Oh and thanks for the recommendations., I'll definitely download the demo for Foul play as soon as I can, though I have to admit I've never heard of that game before. I'm aware of Grabbed by the Ghoulies, but I don't own an original Xbox, unfortunately.
  23. I had never heard that before (granted, I never played Skullmonkeys.) I had no idea that this was a successor to The Neverhood. Those games looked fantastic back in the day.
  24. I used to love beat 'em ups as a kid, but for years, I completely lost track of the genre. Recently, I started playing more beat 'em ups for the purposes of review and I was really surprised with some of the newer entries in the genre (I'll share a top ten list below, but some of them include Viewtiful Joe, The Warriors, Castle Crashers and Sacred Citadel.) I encourage you to check out my post and let me know which ones I missed. From your personal experience, I'd also like to know which ones you consider best for playing with friends and which ones can also be enjoyed on your own. Thanks in advance! Top 10: Modern Beat ’em Ups
  25. Personally, I lose track of time whenever I'm playing rhythm games like Rock Band 3. There's something about that game that makes me want to play one more song.
