This Week In Retro - Latest Gaming News
Games Retrospect replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I like the idea of having all the retro gaming news in one place, but there are so many sites on the internet that regurgitate press releases that most of the people who follow video games already have outlets where they read this on a regular basis. I really hope this works for you, though. Keep up the good work!- 2 replies

Well done! Maybe I'm interested in this because I also play music, but would you ever consider talking about your instruments and equipment? Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

What's your shame list?
Games Retrospect replied to SoulBlazer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I bought a bunch of games on the PSP that I never got around to playing. These are the ones I remember off the top of my head: Dissidia, Final Fantasy V and VI, Persona 3 Portable, Chrono Cross, Resident Evil trilogy, Street Fighter Alpha trilogy (and MAX.) -
The original PlayStation is very dear to my heart and while I discovered most of my favorite games long after the system's release, there's no denying that the PSone is one of the best consoles of all time. So I share with you some of my favorite games. There aren't that many surprises (some of the games include Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night, Resident Evil 2, Bushido Blade 2 and Bloody Roar 2,) but I'm wondering what some of your favorites are. Although I love the PlayStation, I certainly missed a bunch of games and more than open to suggestions. Thanks! Top 10: My Favorite PlayStation Games

Which Are the Best Rhythm Video Games?
Games Retrospect replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I really like Elite Beat Agents, so I should definitely check out Rhythm Heaven. I have no idea why I haven't played it before, a lot of people speak highly of that game. -
I study music in my free time, so rhythm games is one of my favorite genres. I was hoping for a kind of renaissance with Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live, but I'll guess I have to keep waiting for plastic instruments to take over my living room again. Nevertheless, there are some amazing rhythm games out there and some of my favorites include Audiosurf, the original Guitar Hero, Elite Beat Agents and Rock Band 3 (there's a link below with descriptions for all of those games and more.) What are some of your favorites? Also, I know Rocksmith is more of a teaching tool and not a game, but I was wondering if anyone tried it. Top 10: Rhythm Games

What are you playing on PS Vita?
Games Retrospect replied to Bixler's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I don't know if this counts, but I'm actually considering going back to some PSone Classics, particularly Final Fantasy V and VI. I started playing them in order for whatever reason and I still haven't touched those two. -
I like that idea of using new technology to go back and revisit concepts and mechanics from classic video games in some refreshing ways. Some examples of video game throwbacks include Shovel Knight, Super Meat Boy, New Super Mario Bros, GTA: Chinatown Wars and Mega Man 9. Nevertheless, my favorite is probably Street Fighter IV and even when the game used a semi-3D style that looked amazing when it came out, most of its concepts were borrowed from II and III. So what are some of your favorite video game throwbacks and why?

A pocket-size Windows laptop
Games Retrospect replied to Flojomojo's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Although this sounds great in theory, I don't know how many people really want that "pocket computer". From the pictures, it looks more like something you'd carry in a bag and at that point, why not use a regular laptop or a netbook. There are probably more convenient ways (and cheaper) to play emulators on a device that fits in your pocket. Also, while I've used laptops with Intel HD Graphics before, those things get outdated fast. -
The Banner Saga is 4.99 on Steam in case anyone's interested.

thought peoples might get a giggle from this.
Games Retrospect replied to dustygraves.'s topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
The petition's about to hit its goal. Not that it means anything, but congratulations internet, I guess. -
No Man's Sky sounds and looks absolutely fantastic, but I get the feeling that a lot of people have impossible expectations for what that game's going to be. Granted, during the last preview events, the developers showed a bunch of features and it sounds like there's going to be combat, survival mechanics and other things other than the procedurally generated environments. I guess only time will tell, but I remain cautiously optimistic about it.

Ok... Seriously Tempted by VR
Games Retrospect replied to MotoRacer's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I won't commit to purchasing any VR headset for a while and I have to admit, that while the experience sounds tempting, I find the available headsets prohibitively expensive. Technology tends to get cheaper as time goes by, so we'll see what happens, but that's how I feel about it right now. I would love to try it somehow though. Everything I've heard from the press side of things sounds amazing (most of the reviews are glowing, to say the least,) but it's remarkably difficult to communicate how it feels to use/be in "VR" without experiencing it. -
Opinion on Video Game Manuals
Games Retrospect replied to Codester78's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Although personally I don't collect any manuals, I do miss having them. I remember that during the PS2 era, the first thing I did whenever I got a new game was to look at the manual. Some of them were amazing. -
Terrifying Survival Horror Games
Games Retrospect replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I understand that sharing links can be annoying, especially for people who have been members for a long time. That said, whenever I start a new thread, I try to make the links secondary. In this case, for instance, I mentioned most of the games from the articles so no one feels forced to click on any links. I feel that in cases like this one, the links add something for people who would like to hear my personal opinion or would like to read a short extract about the games mentioned. -
The survival horror genre has always been popular, but ever since everyone on YouTube started making videos of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, there was a resurgence. This renewed popularity encouraged developers to make some fantastic games like Alan Wake, Outlast, The Last of Us and Dead Space. But even before Amnesia, there were some amazing survival horror games like Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill, Undying, Eternal Darkness and System Shock. I like that idea of exploring tense environments, scavenging for ammunition, fighting horrifying bosses and solving puzzles from time to time because that's part of what makes the genre so appealing. So what are your favorite survival horror games? And what's your favorite part about them? I'll leave a link below in case anyone would like to read a description for the games I just mentioned. Whenever most people think about first-person shooters, the first image that come to their minds is probably Call of Duty or Battlefield, but I think about classic games like Quake or Doom. Quake had a tremendous impact on me and I spent countless hours playing against random people and family members. Quake III is definitely my favorite in the series, but what are the best games that offer a similar "arena shooter: experience? Some of the ones I played include thew Rise of the Triad remake, Painkiller, Tribes, Ascent, Nexuiz, Serious Sam and of course, Unreal Tournament. I'll leave you the list below with a brief description for each one in case anyone would like to read it, but I also want to know which games I missed. Top 10: Games Like Quake

Best "Retro-Style" Games
Games Retrospect replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I have never heard of Odallus. I must admit I have a soft spot for metroidvania-style games, so I should definitely check it out at some point. As for Oniken, I played the game before it even came out because I was reviewing it and I think it was a pre-release version, so I don't think I have it on Steam. In other words, I definitely didn't play the patched version. -
Best "Retro-Style" Games
Games Retrospect replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I'm glad you liked the list. From now on, whenever I share an article I'll include some form of list for those who don't like clicking on links. As for Oniken, I played it for the purposes of review back when it came out and I wasn't as impressed as other people. I liked its audiovisual style, but the gameplay was too harsh for my taste. -
Over the past few years, indie developers have paid homage to classic games through their own games. So pixelated graphics, old-school chiptunes, two-dimensional levels and ideas that were popular decades ago are back and I couldn't be happier. The problem is that keeping up with all of these releases is remarkably difficult, so I tried to make a comprehensive list with some of the best ones. Some of them include Shovel Knight, Hotline Miami, Fez, FTL, Super Meat Boy, Spelunky, Braid, To the Moon, Mega Man 9 and Mercenary Kings (there are more in the links below, but these are my favorite.) Which one do you like the most? And what do you consider to be a retro-style game or indie game that retro fans should absolutely play? What Are Some of the Best Indie Games?
Games Retrospect replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I do understand what you mean. But I just want you to know that I've had some compelling discussions with people from the forums with some of the articles I've shared. I think it's important that people like you voice your opinion on the matter and I'll try to make some changes accordingly, but I want you to know that I do put effort in the process of sharing articles. And no, I'm not getting rich on my monetized blog. I started it as a personal project while in college because I love games and since I'm aware that it has some problems, so I'm trying to make improvements all the time. I'm terribly sorry that people like you, who have being users for a long time, have to see people sharing just links, but I do it with the best intentions and I always try to be as transparent as possible. I've been doing this for a while, but I want to improve as much as I can (as a writer, administrator and designer of his own website) and any feedback that anyone can provide is always more than welcome. I'm glad I had this conversation with you and feel free to voice your concerns again whenever you see one of my posts on the forums!
