  1. I've been playing this game being finally sold on the idea that Bentley Bear is Atari's unspoken mascot. Looked like Bentley played a significant part in the game (and I was not wrong) so I checked it out. And glad I did. The game helped cement a bunch of classic characters in the Atari line up, like Torr for the Swordquest series, Nick the Demon from Demons to Diamonds (cute?), Warren the main guy from Adventure, the Yar, and the Caretaker himself is another interesting character as the Atari company works to establish and re-establish their own community of characters: Still working to wrap up this game (currently on the final boss!). Game has been really fun and engaging. Thanks for the video on how to find the 5th floor!
  2. New Atari did say they were supportive of the retro scene. Spin would be Bentley Bear is the unspoken mascot of Atari. [Atari Mania 2022] Getting Crystal Castle on the Jaguar would help Atari establish Bentley that much more as a mascot, and help build excitement for future Bentley Bear projects and Bentley Bear merchandise sales. We get a free game, and Atari gets free advertising.
  3. https://www.atarilegend.com/games/bentley-bears-magical-anagramsIt has been asked over the years, if you have Sonic for Sega, and Mario for Nintendo, who is the mascot for Atari? And while this has been debated, and other mascots concepts were made, one has managed to sneakily remain just out of the lime light, but just in sight. A cute friendly looking bear that just likes to collect gems. Why? Who knows!? Because... gems! But he has a cool unlimited bag to hold the gems. A cool hat that he only gets for a few seconds to be invulnerable, and best of all, a big "B" belt buckle. I think Bentley Bear IS the unspoken mascot for Atari. At least over time he has gotten a lot of screen time and fairly well represented over the various Atari platforms. Check this out, I was actually quite amazed! Manual and Download Bentley Bear apparently made an appearance in Wreck-It-Ralph. Not a great likeness, but the basics are there... Other appearances: And I like how Bentley Bear is the main character shown on the Atari Mania cover art. Bentley plays a big part in the game where you as the Caretaker are solving a mystery during a night shift at the Atari Museum. Three appearances in 50th Anniversary with the arcade Crystal Castles, 2600 Crystal Castles, and Atari Karts. All this to say, I think Bentley Bear is already the unspoken mascot for Atari, or someone that Atari will at least feature on a re-occurring basis. And you know what, I'm ok with that. He's kinda cute, and I like how there is still a lot to know about the character. Some mystery left there for this somewhat greedy and yet friendly bear.
  4. Looks much better than the other version of Zool I saw before. Couple that with Amiga sounds and music might be a good combo.
  5. Not being into 7800 or Bentley Bear at the time I missed out on this awesome game. 😕
  6. LOL! Reading over this again (and archiving) I found it hilarious that an 8-bit version could display more charsima than the 16-bit version. But then again, he is a kitten.
  7. They had to change the shape of the awards? Interesting! I guess I need to pay them another look. (Guess I'm glad we got ours when we did).
  8. Thinking back to my pre-2008 self, I believe there was a version of me that wanted to work for Atari, or impress Atari. How fun it would be to work for Atari. Then we, or at least I, got a different view of Atari when Combat 2 and Adventure 2 were being worked on. An Atari that did not care that we had a childhood love for the system, or the games, or wanted so much a pat on the head for even remembering a game system that had long been obsolete. The Atari we got to know said "drop what you're doing and step away from the innovation". Atari figuratively held us by our ankles and shook loose anything that was theirs (the Atari emblem, and anything that remotely looked like their property) and once that was all shaken out, went back to their offices where they were not heard from for a while. And it was then I realized the Atari of my childhood was no more. But there were places I could go and have fun with fans, and that spirit of wonder we could all share together. And I found it interesting that "Atariage" lasted longer than the original time of Atari. And there are still such places the wonder of Atari and early games can be shared. And until this place is gutted as a corporate asset (not a matter of if but a matter of when), you can do that for a while here too.
  9. Long term, Atariage will last as long as the current Atari allows it to. Should be ok for a little bit. Now is a good time to enjoy, but archive and save.. save.. save..
  10. I totally agree on this point. A lot of skill and talent went into this place to form a community, and I'm pretty sure the people that contributed it did so with the idea it was more of a combined hobbyist idea, not contributing to a money making corporation in the end for free. Oh totally get it! Yeh that was pretty snippy because we've had a lot of valuable information given on this website from people that started as non-subscribers. I was a subscriber for the last two years, and would be currently but the payment system was not working for whatever reason. Al said he was looking into that back in April, and that was the last I heard of it. So there could be people that wanted to subscribe and just simply couldn't.
  11. Not jumping ship* I have this question:

What other forums are good for Atari news and conversation?  :)

True, this has been the go to.  Kinda consolidated it all nicely into one place.

There are a few places I know of.  For starters, quite a few Facebook forums for Atari.

I see some activity on Atari.org.  A very dated and unsecure site sadly.  😕

      This one looks active https://atari-forum.com/

      Club VCS... looks cool..  https://forums.atari.io/forum/131-vcs-topics/

And back that up a bit, the other forums..  https://forums.atari.io/

There's lots of Atari out there, just curious what other places other people find fun to frequent?

VideoGameSage:  Forums - Video Game Sage

It was created by people who migrated over after NintendoAge was purchased and shut down.  There is a large group of regular posters over there and while the interest typically skews a bit more towards Nintendo and Japanese systems, the users have a lot in common.  There isn't near as much in the way of development and programming discussion though.

Thanks for that Wongojack, looks like an interesting place.

  12. Be intereting to see if Doom networked is more stable in this set up. Also I would love to join a large Battlesphere game sometime. Exciting stuff!
  13. Naturally I saw it to mean 10 to 20 years. But 10.2 years would be a good run of the current crew. Atariage has been a part of our lives for years, some of us decades, so easy to see why. Loved the advice for the 2600+. Speaking of run/jump games, would love to have Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales as a patch for the Atari 50th Anniversary... or made available somehow. Would just love to play Bubsy for the Jaguar on the PS4. For a lot of Bubsy fans out there who couldn't afford a Jaguar this would be their first time to play that Jaguar version of Bubsy, so quite a few eager.
  14. You got the membership payment system worked out! Glad to hear that!
  15. Hey welcome back everyone! Missed you all! Well, to at least say I was here, I have these two shots to throw in... On GM I want to say the time on level 1 was 1:21 or something like that. These games seem more time based, unless there is a way of seeing a scoreboard I haven't found yet.
  16. You didn't answer the question I, Thomas, and a bit Sauron had about a possible exit clause, so I'll take it no exit clause was in your agreement. You have sold your lot and trust this version of Atari for some reason, as well as versions of Atari this place will get passed on to when this version is no more. Hope it works out well in the long run for all the community that helped make this place a success.
  17. Oh thought we had a SNES portable made from this. Saw such a beast earlier today. Oh well.
  18. These are two long time AtariAge memebers whose voices I respect, and they bring up a good question. This was a good corporate answer from the current Atari. I say current because we've seen Atari take many forms and owners over the past decades since the Jack Tramiel days, and like many would be amazed if the current version of Atari lasts any notable time. So I'll ask along with Thomas and Sauron: is there an exit clause in this agreement for Atariage should the current Atari, or a later Atari turn out to be a less favorable partner/owner? This is also a valid question.
  19. Also happy for Al. I'm sure it is a dream come true to be an official historian. As for Atari over this site, we got plenty of cease and desists back before Atari was officially over this place. I guess now they don't have to employ as many lawyers for what goes on here. I'd also hope that Atari would tend to listen more to suggestions given here, but I'm sure they will be able to ignore those ideas even more easily now that they don't have to watchdog this place quite as much. Yep, business as usual.
  20. Able to kill three Pterodactyl's in one game tonight. Improving.
  21. A step in the right direction. Being able to play 2600/7800 carts and HDMI support. Add in 5200, Lynx, and Jaguar and I'm in 100%. Hey the hardware power and emulation is there now, give me a game system that will play 90% of ANY Atari systems cartridge.
  22. There was a cheat in early arcade versions of Joust where you could stand on the second row middle and the Pterodactyl would fly right into your lance. Well, this shows that doesn't work on the ST version (so far) There is mention in a lot of versions of Joust that the Pterodactyl flies low to the flatforms. And this picture also shows that. It mostly happens when the Pterodactyl is coming onto the screen, they buzz the lowest level, and before they make it about the second level, they fly lower over that one. Eventually as they make their way up to the screen if you are towards the top, they will buzz the third level as well. So picture shows that if they fly about that height, if you were belly bouncing/sliding, you might be at the same level as the Pterodactyl.
  23. So here is another interesting fact... When I was playing the Atari 800 version I was told you could lance the Pterodactyl only when the mouth was open. What all these attempts tell me is a good lot of the time... most of the time maybe all of the time, when you are in striking range, that mouth is open. Here are two out of striking range, just flying along, one mouth partially open, the other mouth closed. So we know that much more from this.
  24. You know at 1000 points, I agree there is not a good payoff for the effort. It really should be 10,000. For 1,000 you get that for collecting some eggs. A pity. Still this is fun to figure out for the sheer challenge of it! I think I have some answers to the hit box. It is the tongue, or rather, it is at the V of the mouth... Here is a video of this in action... 2023-08-30 20-35-41.mp4
