  1. I've been playing this game being finally sold on the idea that Bentley Bear is Atari's unspoken mascot.  Looked like Bentley played a significant part in the game (and I was not wrong) so I checked it out.  And glad I did.  The game helped cement a bunch of classic characters in the Atari line up, like Torr for the Swordquest series, Nick the Demon from Demons to Diamonds (cute?), Warren the main guy from Adventure, the Yar, and the Caretaker himself is another interesting character as the Atari company works to establish and re-establish their own community of characters:

Still working to wrap up this game (currently on the final boss!). Game has been really fun and engaging.  Thanks for the video on how to find the 5th floor!

Or, you could contact them with a proposal. Something tells me they would at least listen.

New Atari did say they were supportive of the retro scene.

Spin would be Bentley Bear is the unspoken mascot of Atari.

Getting Crystal Castle on the Jaguar would help Atari establish Bentley that much more as a mascot, and help build excitement for future Bentley Bear projects and Bentley Bear merchandise sales.

We get a free game, and Atari gets free advertising.  ;)

Pretty sure that's right. Better shading, colour depth and scrolling. James Pond was another that springs to mind that was similarly enhanced. Its easy to see the difference and I do wonder if people calling it lackluster on the Atari never saw it on an STE or even knew it was enhanced. Zool STE would be a great candidate for Jag conversion IMO.

Looks much better than the other version of Zool I saw before.

Couple that with Amiga sounds and music might be a good combo.

LOL!   Reading over this again (and archiving) I found it hilarious that an 8-bit version could display more charsima than the 16-bit version.

But then again, he is a kitten.

All good points. I have been a member of several sites over the decades that just shut down or been sold to someone trying to make a profit on the site. None went well. All archives were lost. Mysporttrac.com, gone after 20 years. Good how too and tech articles gone with it. Several others same thing. Some moved to facebook to die a slow death. Hopefully this one will survive.

Long term, Atariage will last as long as the current Atari allows it to.   Should be ok for a little bit.

Now is a good time to enjoy, but archive and save.. save.. save..

I still believe that the real problem is that companies buy for little money the content painstakingly created by users, and users let them do it. Ten thousand users could spend a dollar a month each to keep the forum, but they don't. It has already happened many times. I believe that this is one of the greatest processes of wealth theft since enclosures, and it is still the same phenomenon.

I totally agree on this point.   A lot of skill and talent went into this place to form a community, and I'm pretty sure the people that contributed it did so with the idea it was more of a combined hobbyist idea, not contributing to a money making corporation in the end for free.  Oh totally get it!

Interesting viewpoint from a non-subscriber. Not to be a sneetch but I'm not the one giving a speech about paying to keep the site in the user's hands.

Edit: I'd like to add that this reads to be a lot snippier than I intended

Yeh that was pretty snippy because we've had a lot of valuable information given on this website from people that started as non-subscribers.

I was a subscriber for the last two years, and would be currently but the payment system was not working for whatever reason.  Al said he was looking into that back in April, and that was the last I heard of it.  So there could be people that wanted to subscribe and just simply couldn't.

Is that how they write 1020 years in Europe?

Or, is that 10.2 years American?

Naturally I saw it to mean 10 to 20 years.

But 10.2 years would be a good run of the current crew.

I've had several friends contact me about this merger/acquisition which is kinda funny since none of them are members here or even Atari collectors for that matter.

I guess this is a pretty big deal and it shows me Atariage is a larger part of my personal identity than I thought 😄

I really want (need?) this to work so don't let me down guys!!!

So yeah, I like Trog/davpa so far so I guess I'm all in. I'll even pick up a 2600+ and enjoy the ride. Even if everything goes horribly wrong I'll ride the burning carcass to the ocean floor and...well, Ive made my point.

Congrats everyone and good luck, we're counting on you!

    2600+ advice *

Make unique games, for instance I have zero interest in buying Outlaw again but enhanced berzerk,  run/jump are winners 🏆

Atariage has been a part of our lives for years, some of us decades, so easy to see why.

Loved the advice for the 2600+.

Speaking of run/jump games, would love to have Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales as a patch for the Atari 50th Anniversary... or made available somehow.

Would just love to play Bubsy for the Jaguar on the PS4.  :)

For a lot of Bubsy fans out there who couldn't afford a Jaguar this would be their first time to play that Jaguar version of Bubsy, so quite a few eager.

I can appreciate the skepticism, there is a lot of history that the current Atari has to overcome to earn back the trust of the classic gaming community.

You didn't answer the question I, Thomas, and a bit Sauron had about a possible exit clause, so I'll take it no exit clause was in your agreement.

You have sold your lot and trust this version of Atari for some reason, as well as versions of Atari this place will get passed on to when this version is no more.

Hope it works out well in the long run for all the community that helped make this place a success.

Is there a way out of this if Atari should be taken over by the wrong people again?

    6 hours ago, Sauron said:

This news is mind-blowing. Really, I heard the rumors, but didn't expect it to be true. It does not come without its share of concerns, though, and I think the primary question on my mind is, what will happen to the AtariAge site should this iteration of Atari fold?

These are two long time AtariAge memebers whose voices I respect, and they bring up a good question.

    6 hours ago, TrogdarRobusto said:

Hey there, Trogdar from Atari. It is a fair question, we all know that Atari has had its ups and downs and that some chapters in the company's history have been less than ideal.

What I can say is that team at Atari today is committed to ensuring Atari remains a relevant brand in gaming and pop culture 50 years from now, long after we have all moved on. We understand that we are caretakers to something very special. And we recognize that the fan base and homebrew community has played an outsized role in the sustained popularity of the Atari brand and our legacy software and hardware platforms.

In teaming up Atari and AtariAge our intent is to provide that same kind of long-term stability for the site and the community.

This was a good corporate answer from the current Atari.  I say current because we've seen Atari take many forms and owners over the past decades since the Jack Tramiel days, and like many would be amazed if the current version of Atari lasts any notable time.

So I'll ask along with Thomas and Sauron:  is there an exit clause in this agreement for Atariage should the current Atari, or a later Atari turn out to be a less favorable partner/owner?

  11. Also happy for Al.  I'm sure it is a dream come true to be an official historian.

As for Atari over this site, we got plenty of cease and desists back before Atari was officially over this place.   I guess now they don't have to employ as many lawyers for what goes on here.  :P

I'd also hope that Atari would tend to listen more to suggestions given here, but I'm sure they will be able to ignore those ideas even more easily now that they don't have to watchdog this place quite as much.

    Yep, business as usual.  :D

  12. A step in the right direction.  Being able to play 2600/7800 carts and HDMI support.

Add in 5200, Lynx, and Jaguar and I'm in 100%.  :D

Hey the hardware power and emulation is there now, give me a game system that will play 90% of ANY Atari systems cartridge.

  13. There was a cheat in early arcade versions of Joust where you could stand on the second row middle and the Pterodactyl would fly right into your lance.  Well, this shows that doesn't work on the ST version (so far)

    ScreenShot2023-08-30at9_35_07PM.png.f7dd9c0a7bedbafd57626d239949756d.png

There is mention in a lot of versions of Joust that the Pterodactyl flies low to the flatforms.   And this picture also shows that.  It mostly happens when the Pterodactyl is coming onto the screen, they buzz the lowest level, and before they make it about the second level, they fly lower over that one.  Eventually as they make their way up to the screen if you are towards the top, they will buzz the third level as well.

So picture shows that if they fly about that height, if you were belly bouncing/sliding, you might be at the same level as the Pterodactyl.

  14.

So here is another interesting fact...

    ScreenShot2023-08-30at9_37_22PM.png.99ccce40726f76e34dc62e628248e508.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_36_58PM.png.636a88607d1b841c1a33864e3f901671.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_36_31PM.png.bb611a4aeae6b1b6b367c40b6963050c.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_35_49PM.png.deb50c81457e0211a273b1ce7d51d695.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_35_29PM.png.7f5b2bb983171db6084cba6d119609d5.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_35_07PM.png.72ac5413711ce88285a2bee2ae67fba5.pngScreenShot2023-08-30at9_34_22PM.png.589b7156fc601591eab364f6e1981265.png

When I was playing the Atari 800 version I was told you could lance the Pterodactyl only when the mouth was open.

What all these attempts tell me is a good lot of the time... most of the time maybe all of the time, when you are in striking range, that mouth is open.

Here are two out of striking range, just flying along, one mouth partially open, the other mouth closed.

So we know that much more from this.

To me, targeting the pterodactyl on any version is too risky and the reward isn't worth it,   I'll usually try to get out of the way and clear the level when he shows up.

You know at 1000 points, I agree there is not a good payoff for the effort.  It really should be 10,000.   For 1,000 you get that for collecting some eggs.  A pity.

Still this is fun to figure out for the sheer challenge of it!

I think I have some answers to the hit box.  It is the tongue, or rather, it is at the V of the mouth...

  16. Ha... I could totally see that.  There are some typical things that happen in this version, like being able to slide in between the platforms to the right of the screen.

There are other aspects, but that is the fun of these things is while the ports tend to be pretty close, they tend to have some variance.

The Pterodactyl is killable, I got one earlier.  (and do you only get 1000 points for that?   That can't be right).

I can say on the Atari 800 I can kill a Pterodactyl fairly often.  That is such a fun version.

Atari ST, also a fun version, and I will figure the Pterodactyl out.  Next plan to get some game photage at which I can review.

  17. I think I manage to hit the Pterodactyl right once every 15 tries.

If I were to make an educated estimate, it seems the pixel below the tongue on a open mouth.   Helps when the Pterodactyl is flying right at you.

Also, I've seen in videos that when you clear the level of other enemies and eggs, the Pterodactyl will fly really close to the one of the three levels.  (the upper, middle, and base platforms). When that happens in the arcade version if your bird is bouncing along without the legs (as tends to happen) that lines up IN THE ARCADE to take out the Pterodactyl.  I have yet to see this work in the ST version however.

Trying to unlock this.  Any other input appreciated.
