I recall seeing the vs. machines, but I really don't know that I ever actually played one. Maybe Super Mario Bros.

If you like Contra, it certainly is pretty good. But yeah, I real bitch as far as difficulty goes.
Definitely true to Contra roots.

Yie Ar Kung Fu - this one was on a GBA Konami classics cart and was also released on Xbox Live
Goonies 1 - this was released on the Famicom in Japan, but I don't know if it was released anywhere else.
I never saw goonies in the arcade. anyone else?
I know that it was in some of the Play Choice 10 machines, so not really an arcade version, no. But, technically in arcades, I suppose.

Oooh, baby!
Never knew there was a Battletoads arcade game. I assume it's on MAME? May have to check it out.

I always preferred the NES version of Strider. It played more like an RPG, giving it a more adventure-like feel. Love the original, too, but if given a choice, I'll play the NES version.
I've never really played the NES Strider, but in a similar vein, I enjoy the NES Bionic Commando much more than the arcade version. The NES version just has a lot more depth to it, in both story and gameplay.
Maybe I should give Strider a try?

Agreed!
While the Odyssey 2 isn't a gold mine for resale, for a classic gamer to find a nice set-up like that for $8? Pure joy!

Current Mame32 is version .119, I think. CHD's (hard drive images required for certian games) have been around for quite some time. If you are using Mame proper, best bet is to use a tool like Cmpro to check your rom directory for outdated sets.
http://lazarus.org.uk/index.php?burners is still the best way to aquire a current (.129) set.
Thank you! I appreciate the information.

Cyberball is a football derivitive. You guys are thinking of 20/20 Super Baseball for the NeoGeo.
Yeah, there's Super Baseball 2020 for the Genesis, also.
And don't forget BaseWars for NES. Baseball robots. My brother always enjoyed that, but I've never played it enough to warrant an honest opinion.

Baseball Stars on the NES is my all-time favorite.
I also used to love the High Heat Baseball series for PC. I wasted a lot of time playing through seasons on those.

AHA! Thank you!

I've been out of the MAME loop for about 4-5 years. I used to use MAME32, but I guess that is now defunct.
I used to be able to check ROM status with MAME32, but how do I now check whether or not ROMs are current for MAME .129, if I were to update to that?
And what else do I need? I still need samples for certain games, I assume. Anything else? I saw something about CHDs? But, I assume those are only required for certain games (probably more current games), as well.
Also, is there a list of all of the current games supported by MAME? These used to be a text file called gamelist.txt or something like like, but I couldn't locate that anymore.
-
I'm considering one for MAME, too.
I used to use MAME32 and it had one built in, but it seems MAME32 is no more.

I never had any issue, either. You should be fine.

Hi guys,
Battletoads & Blaster Master.
Anthony....
IIRC, Blaster Master was pretty easy, as long as you knew the PAUSE trick.
Yeah, but Blaster Master just goes on and on and on. It's so difficult because you never have time to play through the whole thing. That's how it seems to me.
I agree, Ghosts 'n Goblins is a bitch! Silver Surfer is suicide.
X-Men is really frustratingly bad and impossible. I used a Game Genie to see if I could get through it, but still couldn't figure out how to actually finish the game.
And I've still never quite finished Ninja Gaiden. I can make it to the end most of the time, but then I get my ass handed to me.
-
I guess that's a pretty cool feature, but I don't know that I would actually use it that much, to be honest.
Hopefully, they've made a few other additions. I loved last year's game.

The arcade always made me laugh with the "body blow" "body blow" "upper cut"
"He's down for the count! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 GET UP! GET UP!"
The audio in the arcade version is really one of it's most entertaining aspects. We used to walk around school saying "body blow" all the time.

Aliens Vs Predator. The Capcom scrolling beat 'em up. (This came out for Jaguar didn't it?)
Nope, the Jaguar AVP is a 3D-Shooter, it's more like Alien Trilogy for the PSX/SAT.
But there was a side scrolling AVP beat 'em up released on the SNES.
That SNES version is quite a bit different, isn't it?
The Aliens side scrolling arcade beat 'em up was never on home consoles, right?
Yep, the SNES AVP is different from the Arcade Version and it sucks ass!
I haven't heard of that Aliens beat 'em up before, have to check it out in MAME.
I guess it's more of a side scrolling shoot 'em up, but you get what I mean. It's from Konami, also. I don't recall if I ever played through it completely, but I recall it being pretty decent.

Hi guys,
The Simpsons by Konami. That was a arcade exclusive as well. I'm still waiting for them to release a port from them. But Konami has the tenancy to add a pinch here, and a dash there in there arcade ports. Or removing certain parts or bosses in a game (TMNT IV *hint, hint*)
Anthony....
I know it's not console, but wasn't there a PC version of The Simpsons arcade game at one point? Maybe it was in production, but later got canned?

I still wish Konami's X-Men beat 'em up would show up on Xbox Live. Maybe with the new Wolverine movie coming out, but I doubt it.

I used to love the arcade Punch-Out. I could always clear Glass Joe, but had a hard time with Piston Hurricane. I guess Bald Bull was next and he always kicked my ass.
I was initially disappointed the the NES version was quite a bit different than the arcade version, but have certainly grown to love it. It would certainly be in my top 10 NES games of all time. Maybe the top 5.
I've still never defeated Tyson. OR Mr. Dream!

Great stuff here. Really amusing.

Thanks for the list! It'll be fun to mess around with a few of these.

OK, here's a very quick bugfix release for a major bug in version 2.7.1; renaming files with the ROM Audit functionality would generate filenames without an extension. I'm really sorry if you were hit by this bug, and hopefully if you were, you have a backup of your ROMs.
As usual, Stella can be downloaded from the Stella homepage. Please report any bugs here in this thread, or directly to me by email.
Haven't tried an updated version of Stella in years. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Contra shattered soldier for PS2.... is it worth getting?

I do like Neo Contra, too. Not really traditional Contra gameplay, but it certainly wasn't terrible.
