Though I've played this game many times, I never felt like I was making much progress. I think I keep returning to it for the music more than anything else.

I went over to the yard sale this morning. It was worth it, if only to see the thing in the wild. A young child (12 or 13) was playing the Vectrex when I arrived.
I asked the seller if there were any games besides the built in Minestorm. She told me there weren't. Then I asked her how much she wanted for the machine. She told me that she was asking 200 dollars. Then she asked me if I wanted to try it out. I told her that I already had one at home. I told her that 200 was a little bit out of my range, but if she was interested I'd leave my number and an offer of 70 bucks in case she was unable to sell the Vectrex for 200 dollars. She told me that she hadn't been sure what to charge for it, so she looked it up on eBay. She said that she found a few, but they were boxed and had a couple of games. I told her that having the box jumps the price up quite a bit. She asked me what I had paid for mine. I told her that I paid 60 dollars to someone in an online forum.
She took my number and so I guess I'll see if she calls. The Vectrex was loose, but it had a fairly beat up Minestorm overlay. I didn't test it, but the controller appeared to be fine. The lady was super nice... I almost felt bad that I didn't buy the thing.

I feel lucky that I got my Vectrex (in great condition and including Clean Sweep, Armor Attack, and Pole Position), for such a deal here on Atariage. I forget who I bought it from (I'm sure it was Mert or Myrtle or something), but THANKS AGAIN!

Well crap! I just noticed this on Craigslist:
****1982 VECTREX SYSTEM**** - $200 (Hill & Collister)
That's a little bit more than I was willing to spend. I may swing by anyway to take a look... and to drop an offer of 60-80 bucks... should they not find another buyer.
What a sucky way to end the day.

Since I spoke about my bad hoarding habits...
I just noticed a Vectrex pop up in my area on Craigslist (garage sale). I already have a Vectrex, but I had to buy mine from a seller here on Atariage; I have never seen one in the wild. Well, I can't help myself once again... I am going on Saturday to see what the seller wants for it. I'm sorta hoping that this is my big break where it is boxed and they have a bunch of cool peripherals for 30 bucks or something. That's never happened to me before; I'm not going to hold my breath.

Cool! I'm a fan of Super Mario Kart... I'll check it out!
Today I broke my own rule and introduced my student to Super Mario Allstars (I own the game, so I don't feel too bad). He loved it! At least I have something (somewhat) school appropriate that will motivate him to work.
The child has anxiety problems that get in the way of learning. He tends to obsess about a subject and finds difficulty getting interested in much else. I've been trying to find something he can get interested in... some sort of creative outlet. I asked him today if he was at all interested in creating his own video game. He seemed excited by the prospect, so I may load the freeware (for schools) version of Klik 'N Play onto my thumb drive and help him create his own simple game. I just hope he will be happy starting simple - we won't be creating any Doom-like games with the software.

Thanks! I will look into these recommendations. I've heard of most of them. When DOS gaming was big, I was going through a period where I didn't play games much, if at all. I probably missed out on a lot of good stuff.
I can't take any games to school that have guns or weapons. I would love to take Super Mario, except I don't want to introduce the kids to emulation - due to legality concerns. I don't care to take in my consoles because I've seen the abuse my GBA has taken.
Last night I downloaded about 12 fan-made Super Mario Bros clones. A couple of them were decent, but each were flawed enough to make the experience less than satisfying. I guess I've been spoiled by the real deal.

Now I need to get me a Tempest cabinet. Gosh, I'm jealous.
I have nowhere to put an arcade cabinet if I did, but I can't guarantee I wouldn't snatch it up if I caught the perfect deal.
I limit myself to only purchasing/keeping games I like, however. I can only imagine how the clutter would be if I didn't!

I forgot to mention that I have a modified Supercharger... somewhere. I don't think I've used it since the day I got it.
Now and then I think I should just sell everything. Doesn't that sound crazy? I don't have or make a lot of time to play any of the games I have. I'm just so darn obsessed with them.

The ease of use of the Harmony Cart is certainly enticing... and the price is decent. I may get one yet.
I finally went back and looked at the DC link you gave me. I NEED one of those!

-
The Harmony Cart looks nice, but for now my Krokocart serves me well.
I'll have to look up the DC SD Adapter, however.

I'm really bummed by the lack of worthwhile DS releases lately. For a while it was my favorite system... now it's falling in rank fairly quickly.

Ooooooh!

Must! Have! This! Immediately!
It even has satellites!

I had a repro made, but you might be able to find an original where you live. It's an excellent game.

Have you played Over Horizon?

I think you should wait to call it quits on "speed-up games" till after you port Warp & Warp.

j/k

I got 5 more, inching ever closer to the 125 mark, which is a quarter of the way to 200.
125 would be 5/8 of 200. You passed a quarter of 200 (50) some time ago. You have more games than you thought!

Very unique!
The friction control feels really good.Whenever I test out a new homebrew, I get a few crazy (perhaps half-baked) ideas:
Each wrong color hit could make the player restart the sequence, but the timer keeps counting down. Each correct color adds a notch to the player's top speed. The player loses only when the timer runs out before a sequence is completed.
It might be really twitchy to throw in a few various power-ups to collect and/or obstacles to avoid - all while trying to concentrate on beating out the right sequence. Power-up ideas: A tazer to temporarily stun and freeze the enemy or a decoy to bait an enemy boss while the player works on a sequence. Power-down ideas: A potion or alcoholic beverage that slows the player down or makes him drunk for a time (ie reverse controls), a caffeine pill that max's out the player's speed and makes controls difficult, or a mushroom that swaps around the wall colors. >
You could take it a step further and implement a different enemy boss with different AI and attacks for each stage. Examples: A boss that tries to bump the player into the wrong wall (ie Reactor), a gravity boss that vacuums the player towards itself, or an enemy that tries to "puppy-guard" the wall of the next color in a sequence.
Hmmm, if you want to make it really crazy, let the player control the character with a driving controller.

DOS Game Recommendations?

*Update*
My fourth grader acts interested in making a game, but can't get motivated to do anything about it. One of my second graders, however, drew up some pictures straight away! I'm going to take this short demo to him tomorrow so he can see that more graphics and gameplay ideas are needed:

In other news... my fourth grader has me playing Doom 2. I never thought that would happen, but I find Doom 2 to be much more entertaining than Doom. He also told me to download Outlaws... and I have, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet.
