  1. Kodi, Plex, VLC media player can all be downloaded from the Xbox Store for free.  I have not used Plex myself, but Kodi and VLC Media Player work well. I can stream anything I want from my NAS with those apps. All the streaming services are available in the Xbox Store as well. Nexflix, Disney, HBO Max, etc.

  2. I wouldn't mind having a section for VR headsets like Oculus Quest 2 or HTC Vive.  Could be used for PSVR specific game discussion too.

The PS3/Xbox360/Wii sections should probably be in classic gaming now as they all came out 15-16 years ago. Xbox 360 was released closer to the SNES release date than today. (Seems hard to believe sometimes)

I just read an article that states that the S and X require the proprietary SSD to play new games. The SSD expansion is $220 so that makes the Series S almost pointless. You would end up spending less money to get the X in the long run.

A standard USB external HDD can be used to store Series X games, but you would have to copy a Series X game to the internal drive to play it. A standard external USB drive can be used to launch any backwards compatible game. I already have a 6TB external HDD on My Xbox One. I plan on moving that to my Series X when it comes in November.

The 1TB proprietary expansion drive is pricey, but it is comparable to what you would pay for a 1TB Micro SD card for the Switch.

  4. OnLive used about 1GB per hour at 720p. Usage caps are stupid and so is Comcast, and it sucks that they're the only choice in some places.

If it were my only choice, I'd hold my nose and upgrade to business service or whatever is unlimited, because 1TB isn't nearly enough data for my work and play.

Comcast/xfinity is my only choice at the moment. Unlimited data from Comcast is $50 more per month, I have never had more than $20 in overage charges so paying for unlimited doesn't make a lot of sense for me. Hopefully when 5G cell service comes to the Ann Arbor/Saline area I can at least have 2 choices. Data caps suck.

I have the Xbox game pass and I have to be careful how many games I download. A 50GB game like Halo would eat up 5% of my data for the month.

  5. really weird thing is, like the silent film era, many "digital" games will become lost due to our disposeable digital culture. mask roms and discrete logic may well last 200 years. vinyl records 100+ years, cds 50+, cassettes 30+, harddrives, floppies depends on storage versus use, ep-roms 20 years* (some have started to rot before 30), flash 10-15 years possibly less or more depending on use*... drm locks software to hardware meaning if hardware dies, user logs off, servers shut down, etc, then data is lost. dcma has no expiry date unlike patent and copyright. dvd patents are expired but you are not allowed to release free decryption software. currently no public domain material exists on encrypted media, but suffice to say functional nes, atari will exist in 60+ years when super mario © is released. dcma in it's current form will still prevent decryption of public domain discs. unlike silent era films, the early gen games will be well represented but later gen digital games will not. public availability of streaming only movies and tv series ie "netflix originals" is also an issue. in 30 years will people be able to enjoy said content without resorting to piracy? there is a thriving bootleg dvd market for failed tv shows not available on physical media. sad the 2nd through 7th gen video games may be remembered and played 100+ years from now like classic music / lit, yet later digital / drm era games get lost to time and forgotten...

I think the opposite will be true. The internet and cloud storage makes it more likely today's games and media will be available 20+ years from now. Think of it this way, what is easier to find today? A physical copy of Air Raid or Nintendo World Championship, or a ROM? I am guessing that in 20 years it will be easier to obtain a ROM of Forza Horizon 4 or Super Mario Odyssey and play it on 2040s equivalent of a $35 Raspberry Pi and emulator than it will be to find physical copies and working systems of each game. (Of course there will still be XB1 and Switch around 20 years from now, I am just speculating it will be easier to download the ROMs like it is today)

Physical media is what gets lost over time. Paper in books decaying, film decaying, etc. It seems to me that most museums and archivers are digitizing old physical media to preserve whatever information that media contained rather than making new hard copies.

  6. The Blue Ray disks are installed on the XB1 or PS4 hard drive anyway, so really after the initial install the disks are essentially keys. One nice bonus with the digital download is that you can play the game on 2 consoles at once (at least on the XB1) Is a nice perk if you happen to have multiple consoles and players at home.

If you have a data cap like I do with Comcast, 150 gigs would eat up 15% of my monthly data, so that is something to consider.

  8. VLC media player works great and plays everything. I can play .mkv, .mp4 etc files off of my NAS or usb hdd just fine.

I tried Kodi when it first came out on the XB1, but it couldn't stream files from a network, only from usb devices or the onboard xbox hdd. It could have been updated since then though, I have not checked.

  9. What's a 1440p monitor? Is that a common resolution?

For computer monitors it is. The price point for these monitors fall between a 1080p monitor and a 4k/uhd/2160p monitor. I don't think there are any televisions with that resolution though.

You're right, but waiting on Yooka Laylee isn't happening. Unlike Sega who was ambiguous about it, that game is anything but. Originally said it would happen, then delayed it, then pulled the rug out calling it download only, delayed more, then released it at full original price making it more expensive than other systems and PC too. My advice, you want physical? Buy it from GoG.com right now, it's 66% off and you can make a physical copy burning the stuff to a CD, USB stick, or on a SD card.

Yooka Laylee was released on physical media. I have it on Xbox One on disk, so it is not download only. I prefer downloads myself, mostly because you can play the game on two systems at once with a download, but the 20% Amazon Prime discount on new software is hard to pass up if it is a game that only one of my family is likely to play.

  11. Downloads do have one nice advantage for people with multiples of the same console. I can buy one download copy of a game and play it on 2 separate consoles online at the same time. My son and I did this with Destiny, Diablo, and a few other games on the XB1. I don't have multiple PS4 or Switch consoles, but I would assume that they work similarly.

I don't really care whether I get a game on disc/cart or download, whichever is cheaper is what I buy. I don't really worry about playing games I buy today 20-30 years in the future. I am sure that in the future there will be an emulator on a cheap Raspberry Pi type computer that will allow me to play all the old games in a more convenient package, just like today.

  12. I just bought this game for the Xbox One. For 32$, I couldn't resist.

I played the first couple of levels (collected a couple of gold pages). Graphics are what you would expect, bright and colorful, very reminiscent of Banjo Kazooie or the Donkey Kong game Rare did for the Nintendo 64. It seems pretty good once you get past the first 5 minutes of the annoying story that can't be skipped or sped up.

I am assuming that this is out for the PS4 and Switch as well.
