The A1up community is expecting a new run of Atari Star Wars cabinets to be announced, probably on Monday. Eagle-eyed logistics-watchers noticed the cabinets arriving at ports on the West coast recently according to a listing on a bill of lading, and A1up will be hosting a livestream on Monday, possibly to announce this cab. It has recently shown up for sale in Canada as well, but presumably this next batch would be available in the US. So, nothing officially confirmed yet, but in case anyone here has been wanting another opportunity to get this cabinet, it may be soon.

They were already listed for sale at Best Buy and already sold out...

Someone recently gave me an Astrocade as a gift (!!). I'm familiar with all the usual heat issues, etc, and opened it up the other day to check on the data custom (I'd been seeing some freezing after running the thing for 10 minutes or so). Turns out the heatsink had separated from the data custom which is basically what I'd expected. I plan to replace it with one of the recommended heatsinks from console5. The odd part is the glue/paste left behind - from the photos I've seen here and elsewhere, I'd expect normal looking thermal paste and clean that up in the usual fashion. In this case, there's a layer of something blue - it's unlike any thermal paste I've ever had to deal with so I'm not really sure what it is or how to clean it up. I've tried IPA, Arcticlean, even some mild scraping hoping it might just pop off but it just won't have it. Before I do anything too rash or look for other products that may end up not working, has anyone ever seen this and know what might help safely remove it? Was this common from the factory at any point or could this have been the result of a repair? Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

Same as Adam stated, I've never seen that before.  Could be some type of epoxy that was used, maybe not in house but maybe a previous owner.  I'm used to seeing what passed as thermal past from back in the day, a grey, metallic colored substance that they used at that time ('77, '78 ish).  I wasn't into computers back then so I don't know what it was made of.  That being said, I know epoxy has been used to attach heatsinks before and I think still is, and not even the metallic type.  Maybe its something like this:

Now personally Keatah, this happens to be my favorite game for the Neo-Geo. In fact, it was the title that introduce me to the Neo-Geo 32 years ago. I've been a buff ever since and never a dull moment playing it.

    Anthony...

Magician Lord is what hooked me on the Neo Geo as well, having first played it a MVS 4 slot cab.  The same mall had an Electronics Boutique which happened to have the AES for sale on the wall, and that was all it took to make me utter "it shall be mine"... 🤣

What a lot of people don't take into account when they compare the Neo Geo to the Genesis and Super Nintendo is that first and foremost SNK made Neo Geo games for the Arcade, that was their money maker.  So whatever was making them money and arcade operators money, that's what they went for.  I can't really see any of their titles being made with the AES in mind as opposed to the MVS.  Maybe if the console had been more widespread, things would have been different.  Although you have to give props to SNK for continuing to release MVS titles for the AES years after they stopped making the console...

That's actually a nice package, haven't seen a box for either the vecfever or robot arena (assuming 3rd party) plus he's got the 3d printed horizontal stand + an overlay.  Also unless I'm mistaken that's a vecfever II (going by the vecfever 128 mb label).

When I bought mine direct from Thomas, it cost me 99 Euros.

Yeah, Thomas didn't charge much for the VecFever, but the VecFever Mark II cart was double the cost of the original.  Had I known he was going to stop making them altogether, I would have picked up one of the Mark II SD card based models as well.

Wouldn't it make sense for it to have been directly tied to the licensing deal? After the clock ran out on Astrovision's right to use the Bally name, they had to rebrand the console and cover up all Bally references, including on the boxes. Though that was certainly a very, very tacky decision imo. The stickers look awful on the front of the game boxes in particular.

The fact that Astrovision then Astrocade basically went and threw whatever stock they had in a box to get it out the door lends more to someone saying let's print some stickers and slap them on the Incredible Wizard boxes to get some cash rolling in! Hence why we've seen so many console variations in the wrong box, wrong labels and wrong controllers just thrown together at times, and I'm confident they went out the door that way.  Not to mention where things went sideways when they went bankrupt 🤣  But these are all hypotheses on our parts, the history after Bally is so crazy its not even funny.

I had read somewhere a while back that Astrovision/Astrocade was permitted to use the Bally name for one year as part of the deal with Bally. So the same reason why you see Astrocade game boxes with stickers across the top replacing the Bally references is the reason why the latter-produced controllers omitted the Bally branding.

Well really, it's because Astrovision wanted to save money and use existing stock 😉  I doubt the box sticker had anything to do with the license agreement but boxes cost money and they wanted to use up the existing inventory 😁

The keyboard/cart cover is home made. Contemporary pictures of the system have never shown such a cover. Additionally,  I doubt (difficult to tell from the pics) the keyboard cover has the same smoked-plexiglass color as the game-holder on the back of the system. The controllers without "bally" are likely from when AstroVision acquired the rights to it, and needed to remove the Bally trademark.

Completely agree with your assessments; the Astrocade controllers were no longer labelled "Bally" at some point, most likely a change was made to the controller mold.  At what point they were introduced is unclear, as we know Astrovision and then Astrocade sold the remaining stock acquired in the purchase from Bally before changing over to the Astrocade - The Professional Arcade branded systems.

The 4 Astrocade branded consoles I own have the blank control handles.

Well RC charges $100 to ship + tax so really about the same price for Tron, plus with Target they have discounts etc. that can be applied sometimes.
